                    'IBUKI' Chosen as Nickname of
the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite (GOSAT)

                                                      October 15, 2008
                             Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)
                          National Institute for Environmental Studies
                                           Ministry of the Environment

The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the National Institute
for Environment Studies, and the Ministry of the Environment selected
the following name as a nickname for the Greenhouse Gases Observing
Satellite (GOSAT) scheduled to be launched this coming winter launch
season. The three organizations had asked the general public between
July 10 (Thu) and Sept. 10 (Thu,) 2008, to become a godparent of the
GOSAT, in order for more people to feel familiar with the satellite.
Many people proposed nicknames and we have chosen one as follows.

1. Selection result:
The chosen nickname is "IBUKI" meaning "breath" or "puff."

2. Reason for selection
   - "IBUKI" accounted for a very high percentage of the proposed
names, thus it means it is supported by many people.

   - Many people sited the reason for proposing "IBUKI" is that the
GOSAT is a satellite to observe carbon dioxide, which is the
Earth's puff (breath,) and that precisely explains the GOSAT
     mission.

   - People also feel "vigor" and a "bright future" from the word
     "IBUKI."

3. Received applications:
Total: 12,683 (Among them, effective applications were 11,719)
         (Breakdown)
          Internet           5,552
          Post card          729
          Application form   6,402

4. Proposed names:
   3,789 (630 people proposed "IBUKI.")

Concerning the prize trip to Tanegashima to watch the "IBUKI" launch,
please look at the following page at the JAXA website for details.

(Reference 2) Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite "IBUKI"
For our worldwide effort to further address global warming problems,
it is essential to learn more about the behavior of greenhouse gases
that cause global warming on Earth. The "IBUKI" scheduled to be
launched this Japan fiscal year is the first satellite in the world to
measure greenhouse gases (carbon dioxide and methane) from space. Data
to be acquired by the IBUKI will tell us the "current" status of
global warming on Earth, and will be used for our "future."

Launch Window of the H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 15 (H-IIA F15)
http://www.jaxa.jp/press/2008/12/20081210_h2a-f15_e.html

December 10, 2008 (JST)
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd.
Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) would like to revise the launch window of the H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 15 (H-IIA F15) with the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite "IBUKI" (GOSAT) onboard.

The new launch windows are:
between January 27 (Tue) and 28 (Sat,) 2009
and
between January 22 (Thu) and 25 (Sun,) 2009.

The launch window was previously announced as between January 22 (Thu) through 28 (Sat,) 2009 (JST.)

(Reason for the revision)
JAXA has been carefully studying the impact of the solar eclipse, which will occur on January 26 (Mon,) 2009, on the post-launch IBUKI, and, as a result of a thorough study, JAXA decided not to carry out the launch on January 26, 2009.

I thought since this launch is coming up pretty soon, I'd post some information about the secondary payloads of this launch I found in Gunter's great website.

SOHLA 1, testbed picosat and to observe thunderstorms.
SDS 1, with deployable solar panels, to demonstrate several technologies.
SpriteSat, to monitor "sprite" events (lightning in the upper atmosphere)
PRISM, by the looks the most interesting one, will use an innovative deployable refractive system for Earth Observation, along with other minor functions.
Kagayaki, used to test new deployable structures (and will carry handicapped children's messages written in that structure)
KKS, to test new microthrusters and Earth observation.

Listed there's also MicroLabSat2, but there's no information listed about it and I didn't find any significant outside info apart from a few research papers on the new satellite's development.[/i]

H-IIA-202 can put multiple tonnes, perhaps 8-ish, into the prescribed sun synchronous orbit, but the GOSAT ("IBUKI") mass is given as 1.75 tonnes.  Is this the empty mass?  Has anyone seen a loaded mass number for the F15 payload?

According to JAXA

On January 11, the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite "IBUKI" was moved to the Vehicle Assembly Building (VAB). The satellite will be loaded onto the H-IIA Launch Vehicle No.15 to be ready for launch.

On the 21st, JAXA broadcast will be on air from 12:30 p.m. We will report the launch live from the Tanegashima Space Center. You can enjoy the broadcast through the Internet or at various public viewing areas in Japan including JAXA offices, JAXAi, some science museums, and universities. In addition, some cable TV channels and mobile phone service providers will broadcast the report.

* The JAXA broadcast schedule date and time are subject to change due to the progress of launch operations and weather conditions.

Launch postponement of IBUKI/H-IIA F15

The launch of the Greenhouse Gases Observing Satellite "IBUKI" (GOSAT) by the H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 15 (H-IIA F15) was decided to be postponed as bad weather is forecast around the time of the countdown operations staging one day prior to the launch day. The launch was originally scheduled for January 21, 2009 (Japan Standard Time, JST). The new launch date will be January 22, 2009, or later. We will carefully monitor the weather conditions to determine the date.

                         Correction from JAXA

We are sorry, but we had a typo in our last press release issued at
1:00 p.m. today titled "New Launch Day of the IBUKI (GOSAT) aboard
H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 15." The launch time was announced at 12:45
p.m. (JST) on Jan.
22, 2009, but it should have been 12:54 p.m..

The correct new launch time and date are 12:54 p.m. on Jan. 22, 2009
(JST.)

We sincerely apologize for the error.

                             Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA)

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, Ltd. and the Japan Aerospace Exploration
Agency were scheduled to launch the Greenhouse Gases Observing
Satellite "IBUKI" (GOSAT) by the H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 15
(H-IIA F15) on January 22, 2009 (Japan Standard Time, JST) from the
Tanegashima Space Center; however, we decided to reschedule the launch
date to January 23 (JST) as an excessive volume of clouds including a
freezing layer are expected to cover the launch site around the launch
time on the 22nd.

The launch time is between 12:54 p.m. and 1:16 p.m. on the 23rd (JST.)

We continue to examine the weather after tomorrow to make the ultimate
decision of the launch on Jan. 23.

JAXA will be broadcasting the launch of the "IBUKI" (GOSAT) H-IIA Launch Vehicle No. 15 live from Tanegashima via the Internet and on screens at public viewing sites.

*This program is scheduled to start about 30 minutes prior to the launch time, but it is subject to change due to the operation status, weather conditions and other factors on the launch day.

Is anyone else having problems viewing the "sample image" on the JAXA live broadcast page? It doesn't seem to want to play in my windows media player.

If these are loaded mass numbers (they total only 1,983 kg), H-IIA F-15 is an enormous capability overkill for this launch.

But it's the only thing Japan currently has. Although they've used foreign launchers before, it's something they'd do as last resort.
