Can't imagine it'd be too bad... Right now all ops are fine.

Employees are to secure their work areas and bag their PCs. Liberal leave policy for employees wanting to secure their homes. No decision yet on center closure Tuesday. Employees should sit tight at home tomorrow morning and wait for direction.

This is right on time.  I spread 8 yards of mulch over the weekend.

It is forecast to be a Cat 1 hurricane by the time it hits the Houston area.  JSC has gone to Level 4 preperations (most basic).  It will not likely effect ISS operations.  However, the teams are reviewing upcoming activities and preparing just in case.  They will continue to watch it but JSC is not planned to be impacted from a Cat 1-2 storm.  Cat 3 or higher they would shut down.

What is a Cat 1 Hurricane "like" for those of us in countries where a strong breeze makes the news? Sorta thing that can blow out the windows?

I don't think I've ever experienced more than a 40 mph gust, so God knows what sustained winds or 60 mph or more are like.

I assume they built JSC to avoid bad damage up to a certain Cat Hurricane?

Hope everyone will be safe and no one has to end up doing repairs to your houses.

This is right on time.  I spread 8 yards of mulch over the weekend.

I had to google that! ;D

Cat 1 hurricanes are more rainmakers than anything else... I'm no tropical expert, but this thing doesn't look like a problem at all. I'd be shocked if it reached hurricane status.

The below description of a Cat 1 is straight out of the 5:22 am local hurricane statement from the Houston office of the National Weather Service.  Also, for those outside of hurricane alley, another of our favorite terms is "dirty side" of the storm.  That's the side with winds tangent to the direction of motion, where the storm motion adds on to the ground speed of the wind.  The quoted wind speed of storms is relative to the center, not a ground speed.

DAMAGING WINDS ARE EXPECTED.

MOST MOBILE HOMES WILL EXPERIENCE MODERATE DAMAGE. SOME OF POOR CONSTRUCTION WILL BE UNINHABITABLE UNTIL REPAIRED. HOUSES OF POOR TO AVERAGE CONSTRUCTION WILL HAVE DAMAGE TO SHINGLES...SIDING...AND GUTTERS. SOME WINDOWS WILL BE BLOWN OUT. UNFASTENED HOME ITEMS OF LIGHT TO MODERATE WEIGHT WILL BECOME AIRBORNE...CAUSING ADDITIONAL DAMAGE AND POSSIBLE INJURY. DOZENS OF WIRES WILL BE BLOWN DOWN. LOCAL
POWER OUTAGES WILL AFFECT ENTIRE NEIGHBORHOODS.

MANY LARGE BRANCHES OF HEALTHY TREES WILL BE SNAPPED...AND ROTTING SMALL TO MEDIUM SIZED TREES WILL BE UPROOTED.

...STORM SURGE AND STORM TIDE...

A STORM SURGE OF 2 TO 4 FEET IS EXPECTED NEAR AND JUST TO THE EAST OF WHERE EDOUARD MAKES LANDFALL. THE WATER LEVELS BELOW ARE BASED BASED ON THE LANDFALL OF A STRONG TROPICAL STORM IN THE VICINITY OF GALVESTON BAY. IF EDOUARD BECOMES A CATEGORY ONE HURRICANE...STORM SURGE LEVELS COULD REACH 4 FEET. BELOW IS A TABLE OF EXPECTED WATER LEVELS FACTORING IN THE COMBINED EFFECTS OF STORM SURGE AND TIDES NEAR THE LANDFALL TIME OF TUESDAY MORNING.

LOCATION      EXPECTED WATER MAX LEVELS TUESDAY MORNING

HIGH ISLAND                 5.0 FEET.
MORGANS POINT...            3.5 FEET.
CLEAR LAKE ENTRANCE...      4.0 FEET.
EAGLE POINT...              4.0 FEET.
PORT BOLIVAR...             4.7 FEET.
GALVESTON CHANNEL...        4.7 FEET.
GALVESTON PLEASURE PIER...  5.2 FEET.
JAMAICA BEACH...            4.2 FEET.
SAN LUIS PASS...            4.0 FEET.
FREEPORT...                 3.2 FEET.
PORT O CONNOR...            1.2 FEET.

NOTE:  TIDE LEVELS ARE REFERENCED FROM MEAN LOWER LOW WATER

If I like something on NSF, it's probably because I know it to be accurate.  Every once in a while, it's just something I agree with.  Facts generally receive the former.

8 yards is about 26 hogsheads for you Brits.   :-*

Rainmakers are worse for Houston. The most costly storm ever to hit Houston (Tropical Storm Allison in 2001) technically wasn't even a tropical storm when it hit. But it stalled over the city and dumped a ton of rain.

(cue up your Stevie Ray Vaughan CD...)

I rode out a cat 1 hurricane (Chantal in 1989) and I'd much rather have another one of those than another Allison. Course you start getting to cat 2 and higher and I'd take the rainmaker.

Interesting.  Haven't heard that yet.  Is this the word coming out of the 10:00 meeting?  I guess the ORR is off then.....

The email chain originates with a deputy in JSC SMA, so presumably out of some JSC senior staff meeting.

Hope you all stay safe and avoid damage to your properties - though I know you're all made of stern stuff when it comes to mother nature.

I remember when we had the 5.4 Earthquake here earlier in the year. Absolutely s--- myself! ;D Before getting laughed at by a friend in San Diego.

They just had one of those in L.A. last week.  Not sure they were laughing right away.

The meeting isn't over yet but some managers are getting the word out to their troops via their Blackberries.

Thanks, as we hadn't heard more than "we may close at 12". Now we know.
