When the Shuttle lands, I always hear jets and helicopters nearby. Does anyone know what aircraft are in the air during landing? Anyone know of video that shows a larger area of view which would show these aircraft flying nearby? (Most landing video I see are close ups of Shuttle - understandably!)

Thanks.

NavySpaceFan referenced that Commander Kelly "hit the three wire".  Is that an aircraft carrier landing term?  Is that good?

Yes and yes.  A carrier has four landing arresting wires for aircraft to catch.  The preferred wire is usually the third wire, or 'three-wire.'

The STA flies the final approach with the shuttle.  The helicopter is the KSC security helicopter (Bell Huey).

View from Playalinda was one of the best views of an approach we've had.

Tail air brakes fully or partly deployed long before touch down; is it normal or it was carrying too much speed?

From the north runway camera view, looks like they had a little bit of crosswind on landing.  He got a little bit of hang time but still put her down perfectly.  Wonderful job Mark.

Thank you, NSF team, for your answers! One more point of curiousity - how hot is the exterior of the orbiter in the minutes after landing?  Do the ceramic tiles cool very quickly?  Are there other parts, such as the nose cap, that remain quite hot? How much danger for the ground crew...or do the toxic fumes pose the larger danger? Just want to have an appreciation of the work being done by these crews. Tnx.
