LIVE: STS-124 Flight Day 13 - Off Duty Time
« on: 06/12/2008 11:08 am »
Not to much to see or do today, except one PAO event.

Moreover, FD13 Execute Package is available:

http://www.nasa.gov/pdf/245819main_fd13_exec_pkg.pdf

Just noted a few small errors in the FD -> check the fluid loading table!

Yeah, just noticed that too after a closer look at the daily schedule and the weather briefing.

Just for fun I've made a small and short time-lapse movie of orbital sunset from the ISS using the NASA TV feed.

A couple of points of interest are the starboard solor array motionless (of course) and movement of radiators (top right).

(Will add a bit more later, rather than doing a couple of paragraphs, as we've got the Ariane 5 launch tonight, likely a major Constellation article tomorrow, then the landing day article on Saturday).

Ken Ham is a big ESPN fan, and there's some info on the NASA website about the upcoming interview here:

http://blogs.nasa.gov/cm/blog/NASA%20EDGE%20BLOG.blog/posts/post_1211996086878.html

Also a video where Mike and Mike discuss the upcoming interview here:

http://sports.espn.go.com/broadband/video/videopage?videoId=3415288

Mike and Mike are pretty funny so I expect a good-natured interview.

Matt Abbott completing his final tour in MCC-H, according to PAO Rob. Sure we wish him all the best.

CAPCOM Nick Patrick signing off with his best wishes. Gets a nice message back from Commander Kelly.

I know it happens, where the crew send down a nice message of thanks to the guys in MCC-H (we know some guys on here who've personally gained such thanks), but it's still really nice to hear.

That was a nice event. Got some facts about the mission inbetween the sports (mainly baseball) stuff.

Mike and Mike seemed a bit in awe and didn't get silly, as I feared, so nice!

That was a pretty good interview to be honest, understanding the target audience of course :) There was some great humour, and enough serious stuff to get across what the crew is doing up there on this mission.

Mike Fossum talking about using Scouting knots to tie tethers into a bag.

Other questions about Kibo, the "glamorous" side of the job, advice Garrett gave about living on ISS, Ron's EVA experience.  Brief discussion about when the astronauts first entered Kibo, and the emotions of the experience.

Now it "looks like a real space station".  The interview ended on that note.

Some more great shots from Shuttle - Here are a couple of what is an ancient meteor impact site in Quebec Canada that has a Ring Lake around it - Quite distinctive from orbit.

Anyone know if some flyaround images have been released?

I'm eager to see the new look of ISS. This flyaround they finally had all the arrays at about the same position to make for some very nice looking views  :)

"Anyone know if some flyaround images have been released?"

I've been looking for those myself.  I keep hitting Refresh on the spaceflight.nasa.gov gallery page but alas no new images from Flight Day 12.  The wait will be worth it, I know.
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

They have a few of the shuttle from station that are pretty nice, but no station from shuttle yet.

Beta Cut Out??

Excuse the ignorance.
There's a good explanation at http://sci.tech-archive.net/Archive/sci.space.shuttle/2006-08/msg00226.html

The quick and dirty version is, beta angle cut-out is those periods when the ISS orbit is oriented with regard to the sun so that there isn't enough orbital night to keep the orbiter AND ISS radiators cool.

Well remember that when the two separated, the shuttle ku-band was prioritized for OBSS scans, while the station really did not have too much competition over ku.

I played a little bit with autostitch. I hope you like it.
Absolutely!
Here's your same mosaic slightly rotated to the left. I hope you don't mind.

Not correct.  During fly around, the ISS Ku was parked during part of it to prevent radiating the pyro bolts on the orbiter.  The STS Ku had a mask to prevent it from reflecting back from ISS structure.  But other than that - there were no restrictions - both had plenty of TDRS Ku time.
