Inside MCC for RMS Checkout
« on: 06/01/2008 06:52 pm »
Hi Everyone,

I just wanted to post a few pictures i took this morning from the MCC visitors room.  This was roughly between 10 am and 11:30 am CDT.  Was very interesting to hear the conversations between the controllers, flight director and capcom in addition to the comms between capcom and Discovery.

Here is the Flight Director, also lead FD for STS-124 Matt Abbot.  Second picture is Nick Patrick as capcom.

These two pictures are either side of MCC.  First picture is the right side, starting with the flight surgeon, then payload deploy/retrieve (PDRS), then EECOM, then i forget who is in the front two rows.

Second picture is the left side, starting with PAO, then INCO and i don't remember who is in front of him.  Hmm, i think i need to turn up the resolution on my camera, these didn't come out that great.

And a final couple, one showing the view from the RMS end effector on the right screen, and the second showing MCC from the top of the visitor room.  I hope you like them.

I'm so.. jealous!  Very nice photos, though!  You're so lucky!  I'd love to go there, even without a mission going on!

Really awesome.  :)

Thanks for sharing!  Great timing for you to visit during a shuttle mission.  Great pictures!

Thanks! Who do you have to be friendly with to get in there? :)
Allow subject to scream. In space no one will hear.

Actually, bus tours through the visitor's center, "Space Center Houston", go through there on a regular basis. I'm not sure if they still do during missions, though. All JSC-badged employees can get into the room (it's accessible through a stairway that doesn't require MCC badging), and there's special "viewing hours" - usually about 1.5-2 a day - during shuttle missions.

Thanks for posting those!
after seeing these, I realized I had none of my own, so snapped off a bunch this morning and thought I'd share a couple.
Here's one from the visitor's room and one from the front of the MCC looking back at the visitors from the Flight Dynamics console 8)

Thank you for all the nice comments everyone.  As for how I got lucky enough to get in to see it, I am an intern this summer working for the Orion avionics group over at Lockheed-Martin.  During a shuttle mission, they have employee viewing hours where anyone with a JSC badge can go in to watch.  So, I strolled over there the other day.  Next on my list of things to do is finding someone who can get me actually inside the room :p
