A budget question.
« on: 05/07/2008 12:22 AM »
Here, in constant year 2008 dollars, is the NASA
budget received under  presidents Eisenhower,Kennedy and Johnson:

$ 7.293-billion - Eisenhower 1958-61
$ 39.908-billion - Kennedy 1962-64
$ 114.614-billion - Johnson 1965-69

If we had the  Kennedy or Johnson   budget  for the NASA in 1958,would have been possible send an American in orbit before of  Soviets?
(late 1960-very early 1961) ?

If my grandma had wheels, she'd be a wagon.

You can play these counterfactuals all you want, but what's the point?  There was no NASA in 1958 until October of that year.  Do you think they could have spent more money if they'd had it?

I love that line. Is it from a Star Trek movie.

No it wasn't the money it was the push to keep up with the Russian's.
The development of the airplane wasn't due to a flood of money. It was world war one and two which pushed the need for improvements to keep ahead of the other side. The spinoffs where development of the airline industry.
