Yep, been coming since last week (per L2) but if it's official, official today, then cool.

Thanks - I had a few questions on L2 when it was theorized about :)

Why does it take a day to replace batteries? And how did the batteries become toxic?

Thanks. I don't think I mentioned it in an article, as it was still being worked, so this is very useful info!

What does "battery changeout ops in the airlock" entail? What batteries are being changed?
Why? Is this normal/scheduled maintenance procedure just scheduled late? or what?

Your readers want to know  :)

"Why does it take a day to replace batteries? And how did the batteries become toxic?"

The batteries are of a manufacture that it could potentially leak toixic material.  We have been trying to phase out all such batteries on ISS.  What will be involved is that the rack will have to be rotated down.  The BCs are in a 4x4 matrix, the two bottom ones (for EMUs now) will be moved to the top two slots (for helmet lights), and the two new ones will go in there place.  However, this is a very tricky rack to get access too and a test of rotated it might be performed next week.

That answers my question too, thanks!

Why was this suddenly added to the manifest?  (if I'm right in believing that it was)

Unrelated .... I was just scanning the NASA TV breaking news schedule, and saw all the STS-124 crew interviews coming up, interviews of everyone except Chamitoff.  I wonder why he was left out (or gets a pass from the endless PAO activities :) ).

It was mentioned on L2 a week or so ago. It may have something to the upload mass available. As they talked about in the mission press conferences, the group responsible for deciding how much mid-deck payloads can go up have been slowly realeasing additional room for upmass. So a guess would be that they allowed enough upmass to add the new battery set, and since it's a (relatively) shorter mission the timeline extension was available too.
