Soyuz abort from Vostochny
« on: 04/14/2008 03:08 am »
I looked at my Earth globe and it looks like the first stage of Soyuz launched from Vostochny to 51.6 orbit lands somewhere in Ussurian Region, second stage into Okhotsk sea closer to Kuril islands. The Russanspaceweb.com says that the 3rd gen system separates after 115s and falls into the same area as the 1st stage, so it appears that the descent module should not end in Tatar straights no matter what, but I wonder if this is the case. BTW, the terrain in Ussurian Region is pretty nasty, lots of mountains. Capsule can easily roll down a slope into a creek, should it end there.

Soyouz launch vehicle or manned spacecraft will never fly from Vostochny.

I assume manned missions on Angara (Vostochny Cosmodrome and Plesetzk Cosmodrome will be modified for Angara) will be launched from Plesetzk rather than Vostochny. And year, an abort of manned vehicle which leads to the capsule going down in a mountain area is problematic. In an abort situation at high altitude, you do however have some maneuverability capabilities to avoid mountainous areas.

Still, considering we don't even know what Russia's next generation manned vehicle will look like (maybe they are going for a lifting body design), speculating whether launches from Vostochny in an abort situation pose problems is a bit too far fetched.

But until then you'll see another decade of manned Soyuz from Baikonour.

There are no plans for Angara manned missions, only MoD flights from Plestesk and commercial missions (Baiterek program) from Baikonur.
