Is it true that NASA will slip launch for STS-124 to May 31?  Cause I already have my plane ticket and I don't want to change my ticket to august for the last hubble mission.

I really hope I can see a launch this year cause it always has been a dream of mine to see a space shuttle launch.  Well then I guess I might not be able to see 124. Is it just spec or will it happen?

Did you even read this???

Maybe you're new round here, but this site always breaks the shuttle news.

Well then I have to push back my trip to august or september and see STS-125.  What would happen to STS-125's launch date? would it slip a few days or would it stay the same?

May 25 for 124 is gone, officially. We work off L2 information, which is documented. As of right now, they will announce May 31 as the new NET for 124 on Monday. It could slip a bit more yet, and we'll report it as the flow continues. (They lost some time on ET lift overnight, but the new NET should give them a few contingency days).

STS-125 is likely to be in October, but they are still waiting a MAF report on the tank situation (next week) which will give us all a better idea.

We never speculate, and I would advise you read the article linked above, as we're not a forum, we're a news site that happens to have a forum attached. The news can get convoluted in the forum. The news articles are a solid reference.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that 124 gets delayed a week or two more so I can see it launch.  As the launch date right now, I won't be able to see launch because I have to be at home because my girlfriend is graduating and I have to see her graduate.  I'm in no rush to see a launch.  Just as long as I see one before the end of the program.  What's this CSCS thing I have been reading about in the STS-124 processing thread?  This is what I mean:

Plus CSCS does come into play for 124 - but that is estimated right up to launch and it's guess work if they don't have a solid date on the LON tank. A fluid situation.

What's this CSCS thing I have been reading about in the STS-124 processing thread?  This is what I mean:

http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/content/?cid=5388

"One major factor will be the CSCS (Contingency Shuttle Crew Support) levels - which are a timetable of consumable status on the ISS - used to support a stranded STS-124 crew ahead of the arrival of Endeavour on a rescue (LON) mission.

Every day the CSCS can be extended ahead of STS-124's launch is another day MAF will have in their back pockets on the delivery - and subsequent flow timetables at KSC - for ET-127.

With the soon-to-arrive ATV and an upcoming Russian Progress supply ship all boosting the ISS' consumable reserves, the hope is a lengthy CSCS of around three months would be possible - thus creating a buffer zone for the delayed delivery of ET-127, and ultimately allowing STS-124 to launch on schedule.

It becomes more complex ahead of STS-125, which is the mission ET-127 has a primary role with, due to the requirement of ET-129 also needing to make up some downstream schedule at MAF, ahead of being sat with Endeavour at Launch Pad 39B at the time Atlantis launches from Pad 39A.

CSCS plays no factor in that scenario, due to the lack of 'safe haven' ability during the Hubble mission. Both STS-124 and STS-125 targets will be clearer following the MAF meeting results next week."

So what you are saying is that every day that a contingency crew support level can be extended before Discovery launches, the more MAF will have time to catch up with the processing of the ET-127, and ultimately, deliver it to KSC and be able to make up lost time? Or do I have it wrong?

This is all on the Shuttle Q&A sections. Please do a search!

To help.

(A) Primary Launch <==========CSCS=========>(B) LON Launch has to launch by.
(A) Emergancy       <===ET arrives, rolled to pad====>LON launches.

You see that ET delays affect the time LON can launch, but the longer the CSCS, the better it can buffer.

You can work out why CSCS and ET arrivals are relevant.

I'm going on a cruise and we hit Port Canaveral on April 19th. I'm going to make it a certainty to book and go on the KSC tour.

I was wondering what the chances will be of seeing Discovery on the pad when we drop by?

As well, any other must-dos that are not included in the tour?

My wife will almost certainly be in a wheelchair (hurt her leg a while back, very slow to heal) so that may be a limiting factor.

Hello,

After viewing the STS-123 launch, I spent Tues & Wed (Mar. 11 & 12) touring the KSC Visitor Complex & facilities.  Basic admission was $38 adult (this includes standard bus tour). The 'NASA Up Close' tour costs an additional $20, I believe - I did not get to do that tour.

You won't get close to either 39A or 39B on the standard bus tour; only as far as the LC-39 Observation Gantry (I do not know if the 'Up Close' tour goes any closer). The Gantry is located where the crawlerway branches off to pad 39B.  From the gantry you do have very good unobstructed views of the launch pads  (remember that if Discovery is at the pad at that point - not sure - the RSS will be in place most of the time, blocking most of the orbiter from view). I brought my own binoculars, but they have coin-operated binoculars at the Gantry that you can use.

All the tour buses have wheel-chair access ramps, that lower to the ground so chairs can be moved on or off the bus. This does take a few minutes extra, though. And all of the multi-level buildings (SSPF, LC-39 Observation Gantry) have elevators.

The tour bus operator said you need more than one day to do KSC, and he was right.  I spent six hours on Tues. & five hours on Wed., and still didn't see everything!

It can take that long because (1) the bus tours are approx 3 hours, and (2) each major exhibit has a short film or presentation to go with it.  All of this takes time, especially if you're like me and you want to visit all the pavilions.

The Apollo/Saturn V pavilion is in its own visitor center, on the KSC property (you can only get there as part of the bus tour).  I loved touring that facility. But bring $$.  A hamburger & ice tea cost $11.  Tip: take an outside table for lunch; you can see the LC-39 pads across the water, and it is a pretty view.

The KSC gift shop back at the main Visitor Complex has some great things, and an amazing variety of items.  I spent a LOT of $$ in there....

Some presentation are timed events, so you need queue up in time. The Imax films have set start times, and they do NOT allow latecomers.

The Shuttle Launch experience was great!.  Tip: Don't turn your head left or right in the first phase of launch - there's quite a lot of shaking!

Best part of the bus tour: the SSPF (Space Station Processing Facility).  The building was built with a viewing gallery, so you actually get to see active space hardware.  Many modules are now in space, so as the ISS steadily nears completion, the SSPF steadily empties out.  But keep in mind that the tourist's loss is NASA's gain, as the modules reach their intended destination.  Chat up the SSPF gallery guides; they are very knowledgeable and friendly.

Also at the SSPF is a museum building that you enter into first.  They have a nice history of space stations from fiction to fact, plus full-scale mockups of several ISS modules.  I had to bite my tongue while walking by the Habitation module, hearing folks chatting away about "so this is where they will live". I was so tempted to say "this'll never fly, folks!"  :)

So now you're saying, Dave what's left that you didn't see after two days? I didn't get to do either the 'Cape Canaveral Then & Now' tour or the 'NASA Up Close' tour. I also did not get to visit the U. S. Astronaut Hall of Fame.

The solution is clear - I'll just have to come back for another launch & sightseeing trip.  :)

David

David, thanks for the great and detailed post, especially with info for wheelchair accessibility!

Unfortunately, I will only have 1 day there.. but I am planing on doing the "up close" tour. Might be tight to put anything else into the day though. Like you, I'll want to see everything I can.

Thanks again! I appreciate it.

You're most welcome, Bernse!  It's because of NSF folks like you that I found out about watching the STS-123 launch from Titusville in the first place, so I am happy to repay the favor in any way I can. :)

Since you're going to be there for just one day, you could skip the Imax films, if you have a science center/museum not too far from where you live, where you could see the same films.

On the wheelchair access, they will provide a wheelchair for you if you prefer, at the entrance to the visitor complex. Since 9/11, security is much tighter, so they will check your cameras and bags when you first arrive.

With just one day, I would focus on what's unique to KSC.  I would do the standard tour, which hits three locations - the LC-39 Observation Gantry, the Apollo/Saturn V complex, and the SSPF building. But you will be doing the 'Up Close' tour, so I look forward to your report from that, as I hope to do that myself in the future.

I would also do the Rocket garden, at the Visitors Complex. That was a real treat.  As far as the gift shop goes, you can order items from the gift shop on line, at www.thespaceshop.com.

Well, as it turns out the wife won't be going, just me. Oh well. I wish I could share the fun with someone else but wasn't meant to be. The wife just doesn't think she'd be comfortable for the 6 hours the excursion is set to take. :(

Thanks for the advice. I'll likely skip the Imax films.

Okay, so my parents have agreed that a trip to see STS-124 launch will be my graduation present as I graduate just a couple of weeks before the launch.  Now a question.  If we DO NOT purchase the tickets from NASA and watch from Titusville, is it still worth our time to even go.  What I am trying to ask is it still very impressive?  Do you still hear at least some of the sound of the launch and all that? Tickets go on sale tomorrow and I would like to know if anyone can tell me. Thanks in advance.

Michael, Titusville offers a very good view and sound of the launch.
What's even better than viewing from the Visitor Center is that you can actually see it on the pad.
To see and hear what it is like, check out a few "youtube videos" (Shuttle as seen from Titusville)
Congratulations on your graduation!

Titusville is impressive.  Heck yes, it's worth it.  If you've never seen a launch (as I hadn't when I saw 118 from Titusville), you'll be amazed.

Almost equally impressive (but not quite ;) ) is how many people go to Titusville for the launch...I've never seen so many people cram into a town like that.

!

That happened to me last time! I cannot believe it. I even tried (for STS-123) buying online WHILE I was calling on the phone too - still did not get the tickets. I'm trying to get tickets (STS-124) via congress person and if it doesn't work out we'll watch from Titusville and just be thrilled to be there. It's the closest I can get to being 5 years old again - and get that high knowing Christmas is tomorrow & am absolutely sure that Santa, the easter bunny, and the toothfairy are the real deal.

Is it good that an aide from MN senator Norm Coleman emailed me and asked if I was still interested in VIP tickets for STS-124 and he asked for the names of the people attending and a mailing address?  Does that mean I got the VIP tickets?

I just received a call from our Senator's office & I'm SO EXCITED to say that we were granted congressional passes for launch viewing and to be looking in the mail for those next week!!!!  :)

I was starting to sweat it because I purchased the plane tickets yesterday & all travel arrangements are set. Had we not gotten the passes we'd still have gone to watch from Titusville... and be quite happy to just be there.

So if you are waiting for "the call" - Make sure you check your voicemail :) Sounds like they are starting the calls to those that were granted tickets.

Fingers crossed for the rest of you on the list seeking those tickets!! Have a super day, I already am! :

Are you making another trip stateside?!? Wow, that's great! (addict ;) )

I'd contact them for (hopefully) accurate information. You'd think they'd at least limit the tours - where they go & when. Here is the contact page (listing phone numbers or to contact by email).

Hi!

I would like to see the rollover and take pictures. How long takes the rollover? Do you think could be useful take the Up Close tour  during the rollover.  Could you help me with a good tip for that day?

 Thanks Armando.

Rollovers take approx. 30mins to 1hr. They usually targeted for early in the morning.

Does anyone know if the the tours run on rollout day, observation gantry etc... ??

What they will do if it is rolling out to the PAD, is the tours will take you somewhere near the press site (i think) and they will allow you to take photos, but they wont let you get to the Observation Gantry. Oh, also, the Saturn 5 center will be open, so that wont be a problem.

...After hard down, they might open the Observation Gantry, but i'm not sure about that... if they do, then that will be a great site to see the shuttle on the pad and the RSS out of the way!!

I've seen the following launches on site...
STS-112
STS-113
STS-121
STS-122
STS-124 (from the roof of the VAB)
STS-126
STS-119
STS-125
STS-127
STS-128
STS-129
STS-130
STS-131
STS-132

Pretty sure all you can see from the Observation gantry is the top of the ET and SRBs. The RSS blocks the view of the Orbiter at Pad-A.

I'm going to be in the US over the launch weekend. So I'm thinking about flying to Florida to view the launch. I haven't looked into flights, hotels, yet. But I'm presuming that's easy. Having never visited KSC before, I'm thinking that viewing from the KSC visitor centre would be good. Unfortunately the tickets for the closer site are sold out.

Any advice on the best place to view the launch? Is Titusville better than the KSC visitor centre?

I'm assuming that I'd need to fly to Orlando (from Atlanta), then rent a car and drive to KSC. Any suggestions from experienced launch viewers will be very appreciated.

Titusville is WAY better than KSC Visitor's Center.  I've never seen one from the Visitors Center, but from pictures and videos you cannot see the vehicle rise off the pad, and then after that there's power lines in the way too.

Titusville is completely unobstructed...you can see the pad, it's amazingly close through binoculars, and there's no obstructions whatsoever.  It's a few miles further, but I don't think the distance is significant when you have that much better of a view.

Orlando's the closest major airport...easiest to get into also.  AirTran's major hub is in Atlanta so they have a ton of direct flights from Atlanta to Orlando.  There's a ton of other airlines too, so you should have no problem getting a flight (book soon though, because flights are always cheaper to book in advance).

Or you could drive from Atlanta to Titusville/KSC.  Mapquest shows it as about 7 and a half hours.  Flying is obviously quicker though, although I can't say either of those airports are my favorite (Orlando is great if you don't check luggage, otherwise it's a wait).

I'd drive in the night before or quite early that day, as the entire area gets packed.  Watching the traffic reports when I was in Titusville for STS-118, the Beeline or Beachline or whatever they call it now was backed up about 20 miles outside of Titusville.

If you rent a car, pay the extra few bucks and get a GPS with it.  Only way you can get in and out of the area in a reasonable time (the back roads), and even if you're staying there a few days it's helpful in areas you don't know.

I've only seen one launch, but I'm pretty familiar with the area, so good luck!

^ ^ What he said. The only thing I'd emphasize from living in the area is to fly in the night before. Also, if you're coming from Atlanta, you may also consider flying AirTran into Daytona Beach. It might be cheaper than Orlando, the traffic on the drive down to Titvusville won't be quite as bad, and it's a little closer to KSC. If you want more info just PM me and I'd be happy to help.

Fly from Manchester or Gatwick on Virgin Atlantic into Orlando International - MCO  (as appose to Sanford with all other airlines) Big time saver. KSC 45 mins east. Titusville is by far the best spot except for the nasa causeway. If you need any more info PM me. I have been over from the UK a number of times to see launches (and unfortunately missed one or two so you can learn from my mistakes)

Thanks for the advice. I will be viewing the launch from Titusville, with Trekkie07. An unofficial NSF launch party :)

As I will be in the US that weekend, I'm flying in from Atlanta. Watch the launch on Saturday, and then visit KSC on Sunday, unless there's another launch attempt.

I've watched the launch on TV so many times, I'm really looking forward to seeing one live.

I finally get to go!  This will be my first trip to KSC and to see a launch!  I can't wait!  I am planning on viewing from Titusville based on the opinions of other posts.  Spaceview Park ( I think thats what its called).  I am worried about the traffic though.  Is it really that bad?
What mistakes should I avoid to make this the best possible experience?

Maybe we should make a sign and start an official NSF viewing party there in Titusville.

Almost all domestic flights go to MCO, so that won't be a problem for you.  I don't know of any flights that go to Sanford except international ones (even then, I always assumed more of them went to MCO, but I guess that's not the case...).

JLicklider...yes...fear the traffic.  Especially since it'll be a weekend afternoon launch...more likely to get people to come out than a weekday morning  or the middle of the night.  Titusville will be absolutely packed.  My advice is to take it easy...get their early, and stay awhile after until traffic clears up.  Or try and use a GPS to navigate the side streets...it worked in my case, but I don't know how lucky we were.  US1 down to 528 will be at a standstill, as well as in the north direction.

I was originally planning on going to Spaceview Park, but got there and decided against it.  They were parking people everywhere as all the surrounding lots were full, many people were directed to a field.  The place was absolutely packed...people were everywhere.  We headed down US1 and found a restaurant called Paul's Steakhouse or Paul's Smokehouse or something that was charging $10 for parking, and went there.  It was wonderful as being August it was in the 90's and humid, so the A/C and bathrooms were nice.  A lot of restaurants and businesses along the water were doing the same.  The lots were filling up by about 3:00 for a 6:35 launch though...so get there early.

One mistake that I was advised to avoid, and glad I did avoid, was taking pictures.  Don't worry  about a camera or video recorder.  If you want to use one, set it on a tripod and let it get what it gets.  I adjusted my camcorder without looking at it, figuring I'd capture what I got.  If it's going to be your first launch or you don't see them a lot (like me), you don't want to watch the entire thing through a viewfinder.

It's spectacular with the naked eye, and a lot of people will advise against binoculars to take in the entire experience.  I loved seeing it through binoculars though...it was amazing what kind of detail I could see.  I switched back and forth between the two of them.

Another thing...bring water...lots of it.

I'll be going to the launch as I live in the area. I've already talked with Bruce and we're going to watch together. I have a place that I normally watch from that's about one mile closer to KSC than Spaceview park. Parking is usually a little easier here as you're smack-dab in the middle of the river on a little strip of road. If anyone else would like to join us, that would be great. We can figure out transportation and logistics later as it would be best to take as few cars as possible, preferably only ONE!  Just PM me and let me know if you're interested in joining us. Also, if you want pics of what the launch will look like from this location just PM. I've got serveral from the STS-122 launch last February.

Furthermore, I agree with Andrewwski... if this is your first launch, forget the camera! It's much better to just watch it go up. Binoculars are good, but just remember to look up from them every once in a while. I forgot my binoculars and camera for STS-120 last year and it is honestly the launch that springs to mind everytime in my head. There's really something to be said for just watching it go!

P.S. If you watch STS-124 with me, I'll have my camera so I can still email you pictures (or maybe a movie) after the launch.  Also, I'll have my scanner with me so we'll get the official NASA TV commentary.

Bruce...you will not be disappopinted with the view from Titusville.
I attended the STS-118 launch last August and watched it from the Clarion Inn (the old Holiday Inn ) parking lot...10 unobstructed miles from LC 39A. I believe they charged $10 for parking on launch day.
Just to give you some information...don't get too concerned with photos...take a couple but ENJOY the experience...or video tape it from a tri-pod.
The view with bioculars is outstanding!
You will experience the "sound" of launch roughly 50 to 60 seconds after lift-off...it's very impressive!
You may want to bring a portable radio to follow the countdown....and you definately want to have something to drink with you.
As far as traffic...there will no doubt be traffic, but after seeing the launch....you won't really mind.
ENJOY!!

I'm presuming that KSC Visitor Center will be busy on the Sunday. Lots of others, like me, there to see the launch on the Saturday, and then see KSC on the Sunday. Is it recommended to book a ticket, and a tour, online before I go? Do they do tours the day after a launch?

Not sure what to do on Saturday morning, but heading out of Titusville isn't probably a good idea I guess (traffic hassles getting back there). Any suggestions? Hall of Fame perhaps.

Trekkie07, can you share what scanner frequency I can find NASA TV?  I'll be watching from NASA Causeway but it's always hard to hear the PA system there.  This will be my third launch and this time I will take everyone's advice and not worry about taking pictures.  I have some pretty good pictures from STS-116 and STS-120 so this time I'm just going to enjoy the launch.

Definately hard to hear the PA. I was between 2 speakers at un equal distance (very confusing). I would have been lost without my scanner.

Hello everyone - one of my party has had to drop out of viewing the launch, so I've found myself with a spare ticket to the NASA causeway (launch transportation ticket)

Does anyone want it?  Cost would be just the face value.  Please drop me an email if so.

Richard (who booked a flight the day before May 31 started to look a bit dodgy...)

I'm presuming that if I can get a LTT, that would be better than Titusville? As much as I'm looking forward to the "NSF Launch Party" at Titusville, the opportunity of a LTT seems too good to miss out on.

With this forum's attention soon to turn back to Discovery (from Phoenix) I just wanted to write a quick reminder that if any NSF members would like to join me for the launch of Discovery next Saturday in Titusville for an informal NSF launch party please send me a PM ASAP.

Thank you.

The missus, myself and the little fella will be at the Visitor's center for the launch - looking forward to it immensely. Pity the view of the pad will be a bit restricted though, based on what this thread.  :(

I'm guessing this gathering has been scrubbed?

I'm still going but I didn't hear from anyone (except Bruce who got LTT tickets) until about two days ago. By that time I assumed no one was interested for just couldn't committ to meeting so I made other viewing plans with friends.

However, if there's a delay to Sunday (knock on wood that won't happen) I'll be in touch about a meeting place to everyone who has since expressed interest in meeting.

Furthermore, I'll try to set up a permanent meeting place for NSF folks for all future launches!!!

EDIT: My email address is listed in my profile so if you'd all like to trade photos and videos of the launch that would be great!

I love the idea of a permanent meeting place for NSF folks for the future launches.  Great idea!!  I was just in Titusville on May 4th and again on May 9th and the 12th.  Too bad I had to come back to PA before this launch.

I'll PM you later, but I'd love to see any launch pictures you wish to share from your 'special viewing site'.  Thanks!

Were is the best place, besides 3 Miles, to view the Launch? I am going over today.
We are leaving at 12 to avoid Launch Traffic, and the launch is at 5

Not sure where "3 Miles" is but basically any place along the Banana River in Titusville will give you a clear view of 39A.

Yeah... I think it's called the Banana River or Mosquito Lagoon down there in Titusville. Although it's technically the Intercostal Waterway.

Good catch though... I guess it can go by all three names depending on where you live.  ;)

What place are you contemplating for the permanent meeting place?

I'm debating whether I want to fight the traffic today.  Way too much traffic when it is a weekend launch.  Where I live, I can't see it till about 7 seconds after launch, but it took me more than 3 hours to get home last time...only about 20 miles.

I've got a cousin from Germany who is flying from Frankfurt to Orlando this afternoon.  Their ground track comes in on pretty much the same line as the shuttle goes out.  They are going to be over the Atlantic off the US East Coast at 5:02 pm and the shuttle will fly right over them!  I've given him viewing instructions, and prepared a slip of paper that he can hand to the pilot as he boards, asking the pilot to keep up with launch status and let the cabin know if they can see it go up.  I can imagine that the pilot would still NOT make a cabin announcement, because everyone would rush to that side of the plane!  I'll find out out tonight or tomorrow if they were able to see it (if we launch).

OK! How amazing was that!  My first launch and it was spectacular.  The weather was great.  Tons of people at SpaceView Park.  We waited around for a while and make it back to the hotel room in only about 30 minutes.  To me, the traffic was not as bad as I feared.
Now I'm hooked!  I must come see another launch!
Thanks for all the great advice everyone gives on this site.

I had a fantastic day today. 9am to 2pm at the visitor centre, including a tour around the Saturn V display and ISS processing. Then off to the causeway to see the launch. What a perfect launch!

I was lucky enough to be in the US when the launch was on, but to also get a hold of a LTT was icing on the cake. A big thanks to Richard Speed for that.

Wow. An absolutely amazing launch! For those of you I said I'd share pics with I'll be uploaded them later tonight and have them out to you tomorrow.

And I'll be thinking about meeting places a little later... after Discovery's mission is over.

This is the first picture to I've uploaded... more to follow after they are edited and cleaned up a bit. This is from the Causeway (near the bridge between the two sections of causeway) on the far side of the bridge. Lens was big enough to catch the SRB sep and fall away - stay tuned for those beauties :)

I saw them too from Devon, extremely bright and passed directly overhead here - an incredible sight!

Not sure why the most exciting shuttle sighting opportunity just after launch was not flagged up on NASA's HSF site.

STS-124 was my first launch viewing, so I decided to watch it with my own eyes, and not miss the action behind a camera. I've attached the one shot I took of Discovery on the pad (taken from the causeway, so 7 miles away).

I'm keen to get photos/videos of the launch. So if anyone is happy to email me some, they will be very appreciated (my private use only).

edit: thread was reopened, so my new thread has been combined with this one.

Not sure how this thread got unlocked. On June 2nd it was locked... and that is why I did not post any more pictures... and like magic - it's unlocked.   :D

Here are the other pictures. They originals are high res and you can really zoom in... but these are limited for the forum.

The view you had was very similar to ours, you had to have been near us, where were you in relation to the bridge & first set of port-o-lets (loos)? We were against the rope, one of us in a chair and the other on a blanket... we were the first ones in that area. (PM me & we'll have to sort out how near we were)

I just reread your post & didn't realize it's a new thread (I guess they've moved it to the old one - which is why I was confused about the lock/unlock stuff)

It was a beautiful launch. We saw the STS-117 from the causeway and only 51 weeks before STS-124... what a rush!!  ;D
