In an earlier post i stated an employee at KSC Visitors Complex told me the bus tours around Pad39 A & B were canceled by NASA due to security issues and she was sure the bus stop to LC39 Gantry stop would probably also be canceled.
Yesterday night I had a voicemail at home from KSC Visitors complex that the bus tour I purchased will go to LC39 Gantry stop (instead of between pads A&B). At least that's the current info as of last night. I called KSCVC and a man confirmed LC39 Gantry stop is still on, but NASA could choose to change this.
That's the latest info.
I look forward to getting some great pictures with my 2X teleconverter and 300mm zoom lens on my DSLR. (35mm equivalent 1200mm).
(I have Olympus Evolt 510 DSLR).

I thought I posted earlier in this thread regarding bus tour changes due to NASA security concerns, but looks like it was on another thread.
Some one responded to that other post stating there was a public beach north of launch pads that offers good views of pads 39 a&b.
I can't find that thread and response. Does any one recall the name of the beach? The responder mentioned this beach is noted for some nude beach goers being common to this beach.
(Note: I only intend to take pictures of the pads. Seriously).
Thanks

Probably referring to the Canaveral National Seashore.
http://www.nps.gov/cana/On the drive out from the entrance to the beaches there are a few stopping areas where you can grab photos of the two pads. I was out there after STS-123 and got this photo.

I remember seeing the thread. I think it was Playalinda Beach. If you go on Google earth you can see the perimeter fence and a picture that someone has posted of Atlantis on the pad from STS-115.

Playalinda closes three days before a scheduled launch and reopens the day after a successful launch. Keep an eye on the following webpage for official closure notices:
http://www.nps.gov/cana/planyourvisit/park-closure-notices.htmI'm hoping it'll still be open on Monday the 6th. It's my first planned stop when I fly in after picking up my car.

Hi,
This would be my first launch and I intend to go to Titusville to see it. (Any better idea?). I would like to have your advice on how long before the launch I should 1) be in Titusville and 2) be reserving a spot to see the launch?
Thank you for your advice!

I've only ever been on KSC buses but they generally ask you to stay in the section of the causeway directly next to your bus. Which can be unfortunate because a number of small islands block the view slightly. You can still see the vehicle just not the base of the pad even if obstructed so its a pretty good view from where ever you are. Keep your fingers crossed for a position on the western end of the causeway because that can be up to half a mile closer which doesnt sound a lot but its acually close to 10% closer.

My English is perhaps not that good, but from the grayline site... is it possible to visit the visitorcentre before the launch, or is it better to do that the next day?
What happens in the period between 4 pm and the launchtime?

Your english is certainly better than my dutch
Sorry I dont have any infomation on Grayline tours. I have never been with them. I have read somewhere that admission to the visitors complex is included so I would think so. If your arrival time is 4pm I would doubt very much that you would be stood out on the causeway for 8 1/2 hours until launch. All the areas of the visitors center are open prior to launch (Both Imax movies, Shuttle Launch Experience Simulator, food court, space shop etc.) Its a great atmosphere and Im sure you will enjoy. If with the grayline ticket you get an official KSC admission ticket you can return on another day for no extra charge so you can go on the full tour also. When do you fly over?

Not on the same tour, but from the same country, at the same time, at (almost) the same place. Somewhere near Titusville.

Am I right in saying that there is a PA system set up on the Causeway for the launch commentary? Is it the live audio feed from NASA TV, including all the holds and polls?

You are correct. The only problem that I had with the PA system was that the speakers were across the street from where the public was and in engine noise from the buses drowned out what was being said. If you found a good place to set, you could hear fine.
What I found funny was that you also heard advisory notices to the effect that 'launches are inherently dangerous and poses a threat to anyone nearby' and the fact that the exhaust cloud contains droplets of acid and should an explosion occur to get back on the bus as soon as possible. I guess the attorneys had to have their say in this. This, by the way, wasn't bad, I just thought it was funny.
The first picture I uploaded shows where the speakers are in relation to the buses. The people are obviously on the other side of the buses.
The second picture shows the view of the launch pad from the causeway.
Hope this helps.
