Russia launched an RS-12M Topol missile, apparently from Kapustin Yar toward Kazakhstan, on March 4, 2014. Reported to be a success. This would have been a short range test, which makes it a bit chilling given the current Ukrainian situation. Russia notified the U.S. before the launch, as required by treaty.
- Ed Kyle
Launch took place at 1810UTC.
Thanks. Why does it have two designators as it looks like its correct one is RT-2PM? I thought PT was the indicator of solid fuelled?
This is how Anatoly Zak lists the multiple names and numbers for Topol.
Vehicle
RT-2PM Topol
Industrial name
15Zh58
Treaty name
RS-12M
US name
SS-25 (PL-5)
NATO name
Sickle
Anatoly points out that the launch was "likely unconnected" to the Ukrainian standoff - it was planned and announced well before the situation developed - but it is fair to mention that the U.S. postponed a preplanned Minuteman III test last year in the midst of, if I remember correctly, a crises on the Korean peninsula (when the borders were closed, etc.). In that light, this test seems either reckless or purposeful.
- Ed Kyle
Thanks. I noticed compared to ordinarily this launch has attracted a degree of attention at least as far as the UK press is concerned.

Brazil launched a small Foguete de Treinamento Básico (FTB) 'Basic Training Rocket' on March 12. The launch took place from the Centro de Lançamento de Alcântra (CLA) 'Alcântara Launch Center' at 13:00 Brasilia Time. The flight lasted 2 minutes and 46 seconds and reached an apogee of 32.04 km in 77 seconds. The FTB covered 15.76 km.
This was 'Operação Falcão I - 2014' and there were no payloads on board.

For the target, the video says SLTGT-02, but the writing on the missile is 2S-SL TGT-01. Can anyone clarify?

I wondered about that too. Obvious expansion:
SLTGT-02 Sea Launched Target 02
2S-SL TGT-01 Two Stage Sea Launch - Target 01
Maybe there was a 1-stage target launch which was SLTGT-01 but not in the 2S-SL TGT series?
Or maybe it's just a screwup :-)
Am speculating that the 2S-SL is a Dhanush - I've seen claims that is a two stage missile. Anyone have more info?

The Rexus-16 launch is scheduled for later today (1¼ hours from the time I write this)
The Rexus-15 launch was scrubbed yesterday due to a technical problem.
The best way (albeit time-consuming) to follow these launches is to check the websites of the various experiment teams. There are four experiments on each Rexus.
See for instance:
https://www.facebook.com/rexus.moxaI haven't had time to check all the news (it's been a rather busy week, with various rocket launches, and the upcoming lauch of the Soyuz TMA-13M).

Successful launch of Rexus-16 from the Esrange center in Kiruna at 11:30 UT, following a 30-minute delay.
Onboard were four experiments: HORACE, MOXA, CWIS and Low-Gravity.

Rexus-15 was successfully launched today.
The payloads onboard on this flight were: Strathsat-2R (flew earlier on Rexus-13), FOVS, MEDUSA, and ISAAC.
Some of the Rexus payloads were quite interesting, featuring payloads which were deployed during the flight and separately recovered (example: Strathsat).
More info can be found on the websites of the project teams.
I guess more info will be posted later by the Esrange center; their news service has gone downhill in the last years. Perhaps more info will also be posted on the ESA and DLR websites.
