Two reasons why they can't move much with the pitted race: they don't want to stall the joint, and vibrations could be bad for structural integrity of the truss.
If they swapped to the other race, they would change all the trundle bearings, and probably all the DLAs as well, with software changes and launch locks and MLI covers relocation (VERY complicated task, they could do it, but it would be demanding)

There's a report in a local paper here in the UK that they are using Fairford as a TAL site on STS-122. Is this true, or is the paper just misinterpreting information?

Not a TAL site, but one of the emergancy contingency sites for EOM (End of Mission). We have a 25 meg, 400 page presentation on L2 with all these landing sites, approach diagrams and photos (there's lots and lots! Including "sporty" island landing strips where the runway is pratically the island).

That is a truly amazing landing strip Chris. I can't believe that the Shuttle Carrier could get the orbiter back from that island - would she come home on a ship?

The Cristmas holiday (i.e. time off for employees) would be effected if they launched on Dec 28. Furthermore, while the shuttle can be on orbit during the Year End Rollover, Shuttle managers have stated that they would still perfer to avoid that if possible. Hence the Jan 2 date mentioned today. YERO is an option and the Shuttle would do just fine on orbit, but if it can be avoided, it will be. Also, they've said that they won't launch on Dec 31 or Jan 1 because of other reasons which I believe relate to the ground equipment. -

Re: Fairford as TAL - it is listed on the STS-120 Ascent Cue Card in "No Comm Mode Boundaries" and has been on the Execute Package NOTAMs as "Ascent only" so I think it may technically be an option (though from that boundary list there is only a 100fps window in which it would be used, and in the STS-120 case it appears alongside Moron, which would presumably be preferred).
There is an article on the BBC website: http://www.bbc.co.uk/gloucestershire/content/articles/2005/08/05/space_shuttle_feature.shtml from 2005 about the 1983 visit of the shuttle on the SCA to Fairford - which includes details but I think is possibly mixing up different flight phases - and perhaps confusing the level of TAL coverage at the primary sites with any level of activity at other possible sites....

I think part of the confusion here is due to how the various shuttle landing sites are defined.
In this case it is true that Fairford is an option, however briefly, for a High Energy/Late TAL Abort – this is not the same animal as the certified traditional TAL that you a probably used to hearing about.
The current prime TAL sites are Zaragoza, Moron, and Istres, Fairford is not augmented in the same manner as these sites are in terms of manpower, equipment, navaid capabilities, and support aircraft. For example there is no MLS (microwave landing system) at Fairford.
If you really want to know more about space shuttle landing site selection and definitions, I would recommend reading these specific Flight Rules which are available at this public web site.

Sheer ignorance here, looking at camera 61, some techs are playing with the tank; I'm assuming that they may be fixing some sort of divot. Any clue as to what exactly is going on?
