Hmm...I was wondering if they'd even be able to get the SRMS to all parts of the wings, I didn't think they could.  They're going to wait until they reach ISS for the detailed inspections then.

I believe the SRMs can do the leading edge panels, as that was to be the plan if the OBSS sensor package didn't survive during STS-120. But for more detailed inspections on all of the parts of the orbiter the OBSS is best.

No OBSS at launch?  O_O  How are they going to do RCC panel inspections?
Standard cameras. There's not enough clearance in the payload bay for the OBSS with the JEM.

Then if they will be no OBSS just standerd cameras, then they will attach those cameras to the RMS?

And whats the clearance between the OBSS (if there was one) and JEM?

I suspect it's the same for the RMS, but it's mandatroy.

That's what Dave means, standard cameras - as in RMS (the ones that are used normally on the RMS). I dont think they would bother putting some OBSS cameras on there a the RPM and late inspections are still going to occur...

There will be late inspections with the OBSS (left on the ISS after STS-123, and Endeavour will conduct her Late Inspections via RMS), and an RPM that will help aid the inspection team on the ground with the analysis of the RCC/TPS.

Mission: STS-124 - 26th International Space Station Flight - Kibo
Pressurized Module, Japanese Remote Manipulator System
Vehicle: Discovery (OV-103)
Location: Orbiter Processing Facility Bay 3
Launch Date: Targeted for April 24, 2008
Launch Pad: 39A
Crew: Kelly, Ham, Nyberg, Garan, Fossum, Hoshide
Inclination/Orbit Altitude: 51.6 degrees/122 nautical miles

In Orbiter Processing Facility bay No. 3, hypergolic fuel has been
off-loaded from the orbital maneuvering system. Inspections of the
reinforced carbon-carbon panels on the wing leading edges are
complete. The main engine dome heat shields have been removed, and
preparations are under way for removal of the three main engines next
week. Functional checkout of the forward reaction control system is
in progress, and window No. 1 has been removed and replaced.
Post-flight inspection of the thermal protection system is 70 percent
complete.

Jacques :-)

since they moved steve bowen off the sts-124 crew who will do EVA'S now with mike fossum?

I donīt know but I see at the shuttle mission imagery at nasas website that mike fossum and ron garan is using the virtual reality hardware.
Does it mean that this is the two spacewalkers? Is garan really trained to spacewalk when he is trained to pilot?
Please correct me if iīm wrong.

Until I know the right answer I think chamitoff or hoshide is fossums fellow spacewalker.

I read somewhere that due to clearances the OBSS was not going to fly on STS-124 mission. During one of the upcoming missions, the OBSS was to be left at the station attached to the outside somewhere. If anybody has more knowledgable information, please let me know. I cannot remember where I read this.

Well, half of it anyway. The OBSS will not fly up on STS-124, but it will fly down.

Sorry, I wasn't exactly expansive with my response.

Left on ISS after STS-123. STS-124 launches without it. Comes back with STS-124.

Just to clear something up, is STS-122 flying WITHOUT OBSS altogether?  And where on the station are they storing the boom during STS-123?

(2) And where on the station are they storing the boom during STS-123?

(1) No. It launches with one and returns it. As usual.
(2) On the truss. They installed two holding points during STS-118.

And those holding points are powered too right?

Yes, otherwise the sensors would become inoperable due to thermal limits.

First e-mail since I became a member and I apologize if this is the wrong place to ask this question, or if it has been previously answered.  I would like to know why they are launching the ELM-PS before the JEM-PM.  Does it have to do with station arm reach constraints ?  It just seems odd that they are temporarily attaching ELM to Harmony, and then moving it to JEM later on.  Thanks.

No problem being new - it's been asked and answered in the ISS section here.

Welcome to the site.  My guess would be that it has something to due with the launch timing of the SPDM (Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator, aka 'Dextre').  I'm sure someone else can elaborate but that's my guess.
