Thanks for the article, Chris - great explanation and it kind of answered my question about "any hope for the schedule picture changing for the better".  Also good news that apparently no tanks downstream of ET-129 are affected.  What is the number of the tank for STS-119?
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

There are some good images of ET-128's arrival at KSC and mating to the SRBs in KSC's Media Archive:

Notice the light orange color the tank has, its foam hasn't been too weathered.

Thanks :) ET-130 I believe, as that's starting to turn up now on the processing reports.

Great article Chris. I especially thought this was a nice touch, as I'm sure fingers have been pointed at them by some departments.

"From long term schedules, it appears tanks downstream of ET-129 do not have the same issues - with processing timelines classed as green. This adds confidence that MAF - who have performed nothing short of minor miracles with getting tanks out of the door since being struck by Hurricane Katrina - may only need to focus on ET-127 and ET-129 for manifest protection."

By the way, NASA will officially announce that change to May 31 today (probably in a press release).

The reason it's taken days is due to their wish to ensure JAXA PAO had a heads up of the announcement.

Do you view this as a NET date with the odds of an early June launch or would you guess the true target is May 31?

And NASA finally confirm NET May 31.

NASA UPDATES TARGET LAUNCH DATE FOR NEXT SPACE SHUTTLE FLIGHT

WASHINGTON -- NASA is targeting May 31 as the launch date for shuttle
Discovery's STS-124 mission to deliver the large Japanese Kibo
Pressurized Module to the International Space Station. The liftoff
time is approximately 5:01 p.m. EDT.

NASA decided to reschedule Discovery's target launch date from May 25
to May 31 after shipment of the mission's external fuel tank from its
assembly plant at the Michoud Assembly Facility in New Orleans to
Florida was delayed by weather. The tank arrived at NASA's Kennedy
Space Center in Florida on March 26.

FWIW, there's a link up on nasa.gov now, too...

Interesting that the Memorial Day holiday was specifically noted...

That's Sid, the same one. He's always on first shift ;)

Quick note, this date could slip again, depending on the flow.

ET 128 in VAB being processed.  By the way, does Sid give any information on launch pad 39A?

So, will the shuttle be docking to the ISS as it normally has in the past? Or will we have another view of the station upside down again? I noticed that even the cameras from the station were giving a very odd angle of viewing, that I'd never seen before during STS 123.

Same as usual, docking on the V-bar to PMA-2.  The same as all the other orbiter dockings since the 5A.1/STS-102 mission in 2001.

Not sure why they'd change it.  I could see them docking to PMA-3 under Node 3 on STS-133 for the heck of it, but we know that isn't the way things are done at NASA (though it would be awesome to see).
