From a discussion over at the Yahoo Space Modelers Group comes a question concerning the replacement of SSME's. STS-51 and STS-55 both were pad aborts with the engines shutting down just before SRB ignition. In both cases, the SSME's were swapped for fresh ones. Question is: did the swap take place at the launchpad, or were the vehicles rolled back to the VAB?

Both had their engines replaced at the pad.

It has been done on the pad from many other missions too

There is a lot of discussion about contingency days in Shuttle processing. Does Shuttle processing schedule imply 3 shifts,7 days a week? And if not those contingency days are based on the "normal" processing schedule or "maximum load". It is interesting to understand whether this is really "final" contingency or in case of real need something could be accelerated through overuse of people and other resources (like 3 shifts 7 days a week work).

No. The manning only supports 1st shift and a partial 2nd shift for 5 days a weeks. They can only go around the clock for the countdown. contingency days are weekends and using overtime

I thought Sunday was the only day not included in processing timelines. Interesting, as we usually see references to "weekend work" on the processing updates on L2 even when the flows are not in danager of running long or affecting key milestones.
Thanks for the information!

When the DAP is in Inertial or LVLH hold, will it actively try to hold a particular attitude (i.e. the attitude the shuttle was in when the mode was selected) or will it simply null out the rotation rates?

The former.

Wane Hale, in his blog, mentioned the cancelled channel wall upgrade for the SSMEs, what other upgrades were cancelled at the same time?

Why is the launch window for a Hubble mission 60+ minutes long when for an ISS mission it's only 5-10 minutes?
HST orbits at a higher altitude but a lower inclination so is it related to the amount of prop required for a plane change maneuver?
Thanks.
It is due orbital plane of the target when it passes over the launch site.
There are other posts on this, I had trouble finding them

During STS-41, the crew experimented with voice command operated payload bay cameras. Was this a one time try-out, or are the cameras voice operated to this day?
