The partially ripped hinge is a big driver with load bearing for the array via vehicles docking.

OK so use the ISS crew from QUEST and use the Discovery crew on Discovery - EVA 5 will be just the ISS crew anyway....  This is about thinking what can work and finding a way to make it work - not about why it won't work and then dismissing an idea.

Mike S: "This is our priority as a program. We need this array. It could gain further damage if we leave it in this configuration."

The other option is to put 2 into the Orlon suits - I know they are more cumbersome to work in - just depends on what you need to do..... - So there really are 3 airlocks available on orbit - heck you could put 6 outside if you wanted to - I can't imagine they would do that -but it's possible.  Leave one person inside to manage each of the airlocks.  That would be something to see!

Lee

The Orlans would be a good option if needed but I dont' know if they have them in a good config for an EVA this qucikly

To all in this quote. The plan is the SSRMS+OBSS+EVA. Maybe you missed the above posts, but this continued talk about more than two EVAers is defunct. I don't mean to come across like a kill joy, but remember, many people read through the threads as a catch up and it can get convoluted.

I can't stop thinking of what they would have done had the OBSS never been build...

Finally someone asked about the MMOD. Didn't think it would be Marcia Dunn.

Not really an informative answer.

Oh oh, a journalist has discovered what OBSS is actually for, and asks what would happen if it gets damaged.
Lets hope the doom journalists were sleeping ;)

Sounds to me like they don't want to get into explaining alternate inspection procedures until they know for sure the OBSS sensor status post-EVA.

They can't retract the Array.
Did they say why they can't retract?  Can't watch or listen right now, but I was afraid this was the case...

Chris B.,

Have you thought about obtaining press credentials so that you could attend and participate in these briefings.  I think I can safely speak for other members that we would VERY MUCH like to have you there asking the CORRECT and relevant questions.

Only that it could/would damage the array further.

Yeah, can't you just hop across the Atlantic for each of these briefings?

I take it that undocking Discovery temporarily and maneuvering to an attitude where the SRMS can service the solar panel is not feasible?
No. Too unstable.

RCS plume impingement would be a big problem as well, even with the array in its nominal config. I'd hate to even think about what plume could do to a damaged array that is not fully extended and tensioned.

So, not just "No" but "Hell, No!"

I have that available, but paying to keep this site up and running means I've sacrificed flying over to sit in on these things. However, the up side is we get most of the presentations and materials used to answer the questions asked at the briefings well ahead of needing to ask the question via L2.

However, if there's any rich people on here, I'm willing to listen to them :)

I could parrot the questions for you. :)  But actually, I hope you get out here for some of these missions.  At least a launch.

So Friday's going to be one heck of a day. Good KU ability for helmetcam I assume?

Why not just telecon in - they do that from the other centers anyway - I'm not a Journalist - but where there's a will, there's a way - I would think having intelligent questions asked would have the NASA PAO guys figure a way to make it happen...

I wonder if it possible to do a "telecommute" - that is to participate in the briefing via the wire ?
Chris may be able to do that...

P.S. ...hutchel was faster :)

Offline Chris Bergin

I believe the ones over the line (like Marcia etc.) are still at a center, like KSC, so it's not like I could just phone in ;)

Anyhoo, Flight Day 9! ;)
