Flight Day 9

Latest article: http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/content/?cid=5270 - last night.
http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/content/?cid=5271 - this morning.

L2: Over 150mb of SARJ presentations now uploaded (everything and anything you needed to know - the MMT presentations. ISS On Orbit Status, Live MMT/MER Status notes. etc.etc.

From the FP Walkthrough:

FD9 – Transfer and EVA Prep
• P6 SAW Contingencies: The morning of FD9 is relatively open for the SAW deploy
crewmembers so that if there are problems deploying the SAWs on FD8, more attempts can
be made FD9 morning. If SAWs can not be deployed, the TRAD DTO EVA will likely be
replaced with a SAW contingency EVA on FD10. Therefore MCC-H will have to decide
quickly so that the afternoon EVA tool config can be geared toward the new EVA objective.
(TRAD DTO's already gone, as you know).

• EVA Preps:
o BSA EVA tool battery charging is terminated.
o No EMU swap is required since the same EVs for EVA4 performed EVA3.
o METOX regen is terminated.
o METOX canisters and EMU batteries are installed in the EMUs, the E/L is prepared, and
EVA tools are configured. The TRAD equipment is destowed and configured, after which
additional tool config is scheduled. The crew requested all their tool config be scheduled
in the morning.
o The ISS crew prepares DCS cameras (2) for the EVA.
o All crewmembers are timelined for an hour procedure review.
o MS1(EV1) and MS3(EV2) perform EVA campout procedures in presleep with MS4(IV)
assisting until hatch closure. They initiate a mask prebreathe, finish tool config, and
depress the A/L to 10.2 psi. The EV crewmembers sleep in the A/L overnight. The crew
may start campout early to get an early start in the morning.
• Transfer is performed any time MS2 or MS3 is available.
• Handover is performed any time FE-2 (up) and FE-2 (dn) are available at the same time.

• Maneuvers:
o The shuttle maneuvers the stack to a biased -XLV +YVV for a series of water dumps and
back to ISS -XVV TEA when the dumps are complete. The post dump attitude handover
is directly from VRCS to CMG-MM.
o The shuttle maneuvers the stack in presleep to ISS +XVV TEA for MLG thermal
conditioning, and is held for ~12 hours. This attitude change can not be coupled with the
post water dump maneuver due to ISS power and SA feathering concerns. Phalcon
needs at least two orbits between events to feather arrays.
• Exercise Inhibits:
o For SAW contingency only: From SABB unlatch through SAW deploy 100%
• SSPTS is deactivated via ground command prior to the water dump due to concerns with
ISS power generation.

• Node 2 Internal Outfitting:
o Node 2 ITCS Sample Adapter Installation includes installing ITCS MTL sampling
adapter and DDCU rack protective plate. Taking advantage of the hatches being open,
hatch latch handle guide assemblies are installed on Node 1 port hatch and Node 2 aft
hatch.

• PAO:
19 FLT PLN/120/FIN
o The morning event is the first of two ESA/ASI events for MS4. It is highly desired in
Node 2 and is thus scheduled over shuttle Ku. This is a VIP event with the Italian
president so it is scheduled during MS4’s tool config.
o A Crew Conf is scheduled for all crewmembers in the Lab via ISS Ku.

• Photo/TV:
o P/TV08 is scheduled during a day pass to complete an ISS external survey using a
digital camera.
o Illuminators are powered on overnight so MCC can control cameras to perform an ISS
survey.

• Secondary Payloads/SDBIs/DTOs/SDTOs:
? HPA is performed by MS4 in the Lab. HPA utilizes the Maintenance Work Area (MWA),
so the ISS crew sets up and stows the equipment and the MWA.
? SDBIs: 1490B/1634 sleep log is recorded at wake up for all subjects. MS4 collects a
liquid saliva sample at wakeup for 1900.

Flight Day 9

• Exercise Inhibits:
o For SAW contingency only: From SABB unlatch through SAW deploy 100%

Does this mean that Expedition 16 crew can't exercise until the torn array is retracted or fully deployed?

Offline Chris Bergin

A very interesting question. I don't know for sure, as the FP Walkthrough was a pre-flight (by a few days) presentation. But one would expect that the written rules apply.

"In the Blue Sky, Painted Blue" was the wake-up song for Paolo Nespoli.  I didn't catch who it was by, and that title is but the English translation.

This is very likely something that will be answered in the FD 09 Execute Package.  Unfortunately it hasn't yet been posted.

Here's a spectacular shot that just showed up.  Thanks Zachstar for your VLC tips!

I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

I have an update on the wake-up song.  After some quick googling, I have found the exact name of the song.

Song: Nel blu dipinto di blu ("In the Blue, Painted Blue")
Artist: Domenico Modugno

This song was played for Paolo Nespoli, as he is expecting a congratulatory phone call from the president of Italy later today.

To answer the exercise question, there seem to be no constraints for today related to the SAW issues.  That is according to this chart from the Exec Package:

Unless I'm reading it wrong, there are no ISS exercise constraints in the FD 09 Execute message.  There's a constraint on the shuttle to limit the ergometer frequency, but hopefully someone can better explain what that means.

Basically, the shuttle crew is to tone down the exercise on their ergometer (like an exercise bike) while attitude control is being exchanged between the station's CMGs and the shuttle.

See the following link for a picture of Eileen Collins on the ergometer: http://www.nasa.gov/images/content/124660main_s114e6946.jpg

Thanks Nick - I was familiar with ergometer, but wasn't sure how much of a constraint a 65 rpm limit represented.  Any idea on the normal non-constrained rate?

I think the rate is only limited by how fast you can pedal.  But a quick google search revealed a presentation from some of the microgravity research missions containing a reference to 2-3 hertz.  Some quick math turned that into ~115-173 rpm, which puts you at a constrained state of ~40-50% of the normal rate.

This was the presentation I found: http://www.lerc.nasa.gov/WWW/MMAP/PIMS/MEIT/MEIT_pdfs/Section_9.pdf

Search for the word "ergometer".

Also, anyone with greater knowledge of the ergometer could tell me if I'm on the right track.
