My Japanese is pretty rusty, but I'm pretty sure the hiragana script at the bottom corner of the patch spells "Kibou" (or Kibo with a long "o") correct?

Correct - it means "hope", and is the name that JAXA gave the JEM.

I think the STS-121 patch had some influences on Kelly and Fossum as the ISS and shutle are similar...

ISS is going to look quite different than it did during their previous visit ;)

Definately.

Looking forward to when the STS-125 patch is released. Will probably be some tome around STS-122 as the STS-123 and 124 patches were released during STS-118 and 120 respectively...

I like the patch.  It looks awsome.  Who designed the patch?

Indeed. It also reminds me of the STS-122 patch, with the square/diamond physique.

I'm learning a lot about the Japanese in general, as I'm into reading their manga and anime, and I like the patch too.  The hiragana was a nice touch!

I think so too. I've been there 3 times now and still don't have a clue what anything means! (I can speak a little, though).  ;)

Nice with the similarities from the STS-121 patch. I noticed a neat little thing with the sun in these two patches. The 121 patch pictured the Shuttle/ISS-complex heading into an orbital sunrise. 124 patch has a similar looking Shuttle/ISS but now bathed in sunlight during orbital day. My analogy is that 121 marked a new dawn in ISS-assembly, while 124 is an assembly flight on a bright day in the assembly sequence.

Just my 2 cents ;)

One possibility, but I think the sun in the mission patch it supposed to represent the rising sun image that was present on the Japanese flag until the end of World War II.

Yes that's one possibillity as well. I guess, like all artwork, it's up to the viewer to come up with his/her interpretation. I guess a mix of both these options are possible as well. As I said, it's all up to your own interpretation ;)

Trekkie07, I agree.  However, this flag, the Naval Ensign, is still in use on ships of the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force.
