can OBSS be placed on end of SSRMS?  That would extend the reach considerably.
Not without damaging the OBSS sensor packages as the SSRMS cannot supply the electrical power needed to operate the heaters.

I don't think the SSRMS can reach out to where the tear is.  It was already at it's limits just to attach P6 to P5 I believe. Perhaps they can retract the array to unsnag the wire or even bring it in close enough so that the wire can be cut.  Perhaps the can rotate it to unsnag the wire.

can OBSS be placed on end of SSRMS?  That would extend the reach considerably.

Yes.  But stability would be a big question in the matter.  You have to be extremely careful with this hardware and they'd have to be pretty darn comfortable to get that boom out there to attempt a fix.

Just to inject a bright side to this situation ... recall that these kinds of challenges are actually a selling point for the ISS.  Whitson referenced it yesterday in her press conference: We NEED to learn how to solve these problems in space before we are ready to move to the Moon and Mars.  SARJ, solar arrays -- I see these as great opportunities to learn.

Brilliant point.....

Question: Who was commanding the deploy at the time of the tear? I understood it to be ground, but Peggy seemed to be apologizing for it in a recent exchange.

Complex passing southeast of Africa, near South Africa, 5 minutes to ZOE, 2 minutes to sunset, 21 minutes to next sunrise, ZOE pass will be 6 minutes long.

The station was commanding the deploy and aborts.

I completely disagree... We don't NEED to have this to be ready to move to the Moon and Mars. If this is something we can figure out now, don't you think we'd be able to figure it out in 10 years?

Maybe they should have deployed with more pauses, like the P5 en S5

Are you saying the deploy method is the reason it ripped? I hadn't heard that conclusion announced yet...

Can we please only have updates in this thread? If you want to discuss whether ISS should have been built or not, do it in another thread please!

You must mean S4 and P4. S5 and P5 are just spacer elements. They do not have any moving parts.

This will be the last update for me for awhile, I have other work I have to do. Handover to TDRS-Z has occurred, sunrise in 14 minutes, next sunset after this in 86 minutes, handover to West in 2 minutes. Great job in covering this flight day 8 everyone, I will catch up to you all and the coverage later, thank you.

In my opinion the only way to fix this is to retract and have an EVA to cut the guide wire that hanging the array up.  Either that or retract and then redeploy hoping that the wire will free itself.

Any one disagree?

Just remember hw much a pain retraction with this array was on STS-116.... I think if we can avoid a full retraction, we should.
