Is the deployment speed for an array fixed or can they slow it down/speed it up?
Fixed.

Just to totally cheer you all up. We're checking into L2 info from official console notes that Discovery suffered an MMOD hit three times the previous max. We are checking into this as previous MMOD to RCC has been impossible to even see via OBSS, so three times of nothing isn't a worry, but we don't know, we need to check into it more.

Pre-empting any panic if you see this reported elsewhere, although it may be a while as we're never beaten on Shuttle mission news given the style of L2 being live.

I read somewhere (electrical systems guide?) the SAW mast is structurally less sound unless fully extended. Without speculating too much, does anyone have a sense whether the MMT would consider leaving the SAW partially extended or even retracting it due to structural concerns?

You can tell they're very very carefully choosing the words they're saying on the loops - Pambo's a class act when under pressure.

Very calm and polite discussion on the radio.  A tribute to their professionalism.

I was thinking exactly the same... I guess the training pays off.

And I want everyone here to do the same. We're getting some REALLY stupid posts on here right now and we will delete them.

Beta-gimbal rotation in work.  Sounds like they're going forward with some of this!

Just a quick question:

Could they add the EU and Japanese labs without activating them and wait for S6 to be added?

I mean this would render those labs inoperable but at least they would be there...

edit: the wire seems to be caught 4 half-segments to the left. It looks as if the edge itself is intact (wow now they said that on the air). If you ask me: go out there, cut the wire - done.

I think you need to keep some electronics warm.

Outer edge of array looks intact, but kind of "folded over" somewhat....

Modules need power for heaters, at minimum, even if they don't open the hatches.

Agree.  The tear is a few inches away from the outer edge.  The edge just folded over the tear a bit.  They're rotating it to gather additional images for the ground to analyze.

Just to inject a bright side to this situation ... recall that these kinds of challenges are actually a selling point for the ISS.  Whitson referenced it yesterday in her press conference: We NEED to learn how to solve these problems in space before we are ready to move to the Moon and Mars.  SARJ, solar arrays -- I see these as great opportunities to learn.

As long as the edge isn't torn, that side should still generate power, just not quite as much.

I don't think the SSRMS can reach out to where the tear is.  It was already at it's limits just to attach P6 to P5 I believe. Perhaps they can retract the array to unsnag the wire or even bring it in close enough so that the wire can be cut.  Perhaps the can rotate it to unsnag the wire.

can OBSS be placed on end of SSRMS?  That would extend the reach considerably.
