Mike S: "What is out plan?: Have a quick look under one of the covers (on other SARJ). Over several years you would expect that. But life testing didn't expect this much...

"So we'll look on the P1 side to see what is nominal and gleen a lot of information from that. It'll tell you more about the design, more than anomoly. We'll take a sample from P1 even if we don't see anything."

Mike S: "We'll go after clues to see what's happening."

"Team looking at a number of possibilities. Speculation on my part is to inspect under every panel during EVA-4. Full length. Don't be surprised if we will formally extend the mission by one day."

Reccomendation from the ISS program is to use the full length EVA-4 to do this inspection.

"We're discussing another couple of options. If we can replace a trundle bearing to see if we can bring it home. If we can bring home a DLA (either or).

"We want to get as much data as we can get.

well, goodbye to the TRAD then.

Offline Chris Bergin

Mike S status update is live up to around 30 minutes ago.

Bill Harwood: Asking about TRAD.

Shuttle management to decide the priority, SARJ likely to come above TRAD. Looks like TRAD will go (Good call BSegal yesterday).

Problem with TRAD is set up time.

Bill H asks more on the contamination. Mike S notes it could be anything as most of the parts are steel.

"This is more than we'd expect at this stage of its life."

Still seem very uncertain as to what it is and where it's from.

Todd H on P6 relocation, and clearances.

No issues - Mike S.

Todd follows up with "what do you mean by threading the neddle".

"It's just about reaching around and pulling it in. But was much more challenging on P5."

Frank W (Aviation Week) on determining process of knowing what the contamination is.

"We'll be able to tell what the material is and where it's come from (eventually)" - Mike S.

"The parts that ware, are the parts that we can replace."

"We don't know if it's a misalignment. My personal opinion is we're dealing with something that's rubbing that shouldn't be. Remember this worked perfectly, until recently. We could of been slightly out of alignment and it's just got worse, but the data doesn't back that up, as it seemed to take a little hop (on the amps)." Mike S (Paraphrasing some of that).

"Most of us are expecting that something is just rubbing."

Wire reporter asks for worse case scenario.

Mike S kinda avoids.

"We don't think we're in any position we can't recover from."

"We are ok - on power - for Columbus. Atlantis doesn't have SSPTS, so we don't have to provide power there." Also intimates they'll be ok for STS-123.

So, let's see if I get this right: there are two race rings, but only one is used, so if one is damaged they can always switch to the other? But what happens if whatever is (hypothetically) damaging it also damages the other? It doesn't look so improbable to me...

It seems the only replaceable parts are the trundle bearings and the drive-lock assemblies. Why does he say the only 'damageable' parts are the trundles and the DLAs?

"We're absolutely booked on ISS work between STS-120 and STS-122." Days off cancelled.

Might move STS-122 down a day.

Still evaluating confirmation on the power abilities on the JAXA flight (123). Columbus is fine though (apparently someone reported that was under threat as per FD6 thread?)

well I hope they get overtime pay  ;)

really though that stinks for the ISS crew!

Trudle bearings are easy to replace (they do have a spare on orbit). DLA's are too, but they don't have a spare (have spares on the ground).

AP's Marcia asks about a second day extension.

Only if I was requesting another EVA - Mike S.

Mike S expects it to be one day. Still being evaluated. Columbus needs to fly before end of window, so two days of extension isn't clever.

There is margin for Columbus to allow life support and some operations, still evaluating - Mike S.
