I'm completely bummed that the launch was delayed.. we'll only be in FL through Jan 3rd

Although I do totally understand letting workers spend well deserved time with their families over the Holidays. This was my best shot to watch a shuttle launch.
Anyone know how to get cheap airline tickets that have flexible dates???

This will be my second 'crew guest' viewing, the first being STS-55. Wake up the kids. Get your wife excited. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Few people get as close to a shuttle launch as you will at the VIP location. It IS WORTH IT!

I wish it were possible to pay for those, or get on some waiting list or lottery. I wish I knew the right people to see it from the VIP area. If I go, I'm going to wind up in Titusville most likely. Not awful, but I really want to see it closer and feel that rumble as loud and strong as possible.

I have to agree with those who say go to the VIP site, whatever the hour. There is nothing as exciting as being as close as you can be to the vehicle when it lifts off. That roar is a beautiful sound.

I'd definitely go. Think of this as something your son will always remember. You know "Once my dad took me to the Kennedy Space Center to see the space shuttle go up. Even better, we got to stay up in the middle of the night!!"
Thanks! I read this (and the other responses) to my wife & she just agreed to go! I feel better as well. I just booked our flights.

On my way to KSC this morning!!!! I'm sad that I won't get to see a launch, but I still plan to burn through over 1000 pictures while I'm there

Mainly reference shots of the Saturn V and Shuttle for the models I'm building.
Btw, I'll be in FL through the 3rd, does anyone know of any cool events/tours during that time that might justify a second day at KSC?

Last Saturday, we stumbled upon "Ron Jon's Cape Caribe" resort. WOW, what a cool place! It has all sorts of kids activities like a water park with a giant slide, lazy river, fountain area with water jets everywhere, tiki bar & everything you could want. It's a time share place but they do rent villas by the day. It's on the beach near the Port Canaveral inlet.
I'm booking flights today in hopes for a launch on the 2nd or 3rd as well. Our NASA invitations are good for when ever 122 goes up
David
If you stay at the Ron Jon resort again, and are there for a Tuesday evening, be sure to check out the Wild Animal Show. And if you do, stop to say 'hello' to the handler with the grey beard...that would be me.

Our "plan B" was MGM studios on Friday and "plan C" was Epcot on Saturday as well.
Larry, how about getting us a "friends with the entertainment" discount? I'm scheduled to fly down with the family on January 7th but have not made room reservations ......yet.

Unable to do that. I couldn't even get a discount for my kids who stayed there over Christmas. We arent actually affiliated with the resort, we just present the shows.
I'm there every Monday morning for the welcome meeting and show promo, then I help set up the show and handle assigned animals during the show on Tuesdays during the slow season...we add a show on Thursdays during the high season which is usually from about april to october.
Two gators and a giant tortoise are spending the night in my garage tonight and a possum is staying in the guest bedroom tonight. We will take them to the shows tomorrow, then they go back to the jungle tomorrow after the late show.
I hope I can see you at the show.
I got a new 100mm spotting scope for christmas and have to get a camera adaptor before the launch. I sure hope the launch is on a nice clear day!
Cheers,
Larry

Well with todays reports on Atlantis & the problems, it looks like I have to cancel my January flight plans. We flew to FL for the scrubs & changed tickets three times while there & then bought tickets to go back for the Jan 10th launch.
I can only imagine what it's costing NASA & everyone else involved. Yeikes!

10 of us going down to Florida Jan 5-13 2008. Already purchased Launch Viewing Tickets for the 10th of Jan. Since that got scrubbed for the 10th, Do I stand any chance at all of seeing this for the 10-13th of January? Thanks all.. I am not happy about all this.. You would almost think this is NASA's first launch.

There will not be a launch in January. I'll leave the last line of your post to stand on its own merit :>

Absolutely no chance of a launch in that timeframe, and hasn't been for some time. Looking like sometime in Feb.
"I am not happy about all this.. You would almost think this is NASA's first launch....."
...of the year. I assume, given you're new to the site (welcome, by the way) - so you'll soon gain an understanding and respect for the problem and the efforts to fix it during your stay.

Anticipating the inevitable questions about launch times, here is Bill Harwood's launch windows table for January:
http://www.cbsnews.com/network/news/space/122/122windows.htmlLooks like it'll be sunset or early evening.
Now, let's see how long it takes for a newbie to post "what time would it launch on day X?"

Update: it took four minutes, over in the processing thread
