Nice statement by Shannon, that if ever they wanted a mission with a clean, trouble-free orbiter, this was it. Confirms the nature of STS-120 as the most challenging ISS mission (so far). And most exciting too. :)

So far on the RCC inspections, they've got approximately 700 preliminary Regions of Interest (ROIs) have been identified with about 300 being promoted for further evaluation.[/b]

The Orbiter Project Office has concluded meeting today and is planning to recommend to the MMT no focused inspections on FD5, based on what they have seen thus far. There were 449 regions of interest (118 of those were in the baseline, a.k.a. seen preflight), 222 were benign and the OPO cleared an additional 109.

Great day of coverage over here. I spent a lot of time this afternoon trying to sort out crap the MSM was confusing people with over on Fark.com. It may be a silly aggregator site, but with all those pageviews I got sick this morning when someone posted a doom and gloom bit about that flame trench article. I make it a point to defend the shuttle whenever I hear bad information moving around, and today was challenging online and in person in my office. It's sad how many people in the techy environment I work in have no clue whatsoever about HSF or the shuttle. You guys really helped me out. Kudos.

They've got that down fast, as they certainly started with more after FD2 Inspections:

NASA SE&I:

"On-Orbit Imagery
RCC Inspection
The RCC screening and review is on going. Approximately 700 preliminary Regions of
Interest (ROIs) have been identified with about 300 being promoted for further
evaluation. Those numbers are typical. Further refinement of the ROI list by the LESS
PRT will result in a short list of final Focused Inspection (FI) candidates – if any. Initial
assessment of STBD RCC Panel 12 (the one flagged by a WLEIDS event at 146.7 sec)
did not show any features of concern."

So basically, they've gotten through them all in a day. Pretty stunning.

Well, they have been doing this for 6(7 if you include this flight) flights now, so they got to know what to look for in the OBSS imagery.
