JimO - 24/10/2007 7:58 AMCan anybody run a quick where-were-they-then? on ISS and Discovery at the time of the Chinese moon probe launch from Xichang, 10:05 GMT this morning? Any chance the crews might have had a chance to see anything?
triddirt - 24/10/2007 8:33 AMLighthearted banter from Clay Anderson on ISS... He certainly has been an entertaining crew member..

Paul Adams - 24/10/2007 4:39 PMQuestion: did one of the WB-57 aircraft cover the launch yesterday? I was at Ellington Field yesterday, but it was too windy to fly, and one landed just after 12:00 local. I could not see if it had the camera 'nose' fitted as it was on the other side of the airfield.Anyone know?
Mark Max Q - 24/10/2007 9:27 AMThat wouldn't be close enough, right?

Mission Status Briefing
"Everything is going extremely well"
Chris Bergin - 24/10/2007 4:04 PM As per L2: They'll likely show the gap filler. The debris strike about 150 seconds into ascent. ET photography (tank looks reasonably clean, bar one area of big interest). The ice that did fall off at SSME ignition. Off Scale High SSME 1 during ascent (3 mins in) came back later, SSME was fine throughout. Same with an MPS sensor. Not sure they'll say anything about the plume seen during first stage that appears to be venting from the tank (but likely isn't), and could be nothing, thus won't be mentioned.I think that's everything on current status.
DaveS - 24/10/2007 6:01 AMWeird black dot in lower center of images. Edit: Seems like it is a speck of dust on the LDRI lens.

Joffan - 24/10/2007 5:22 PM are the regions marked, around STS120 and ISS, the horizon from each?
are the regions marked, around STS120 and ISS, the horizon from each?
Yes...and the marks on the tracks are the predicted positions (in minutes)
Launch Fan - 24/10/2007 4:43 PMOr maybe they won't!
Rob in KC - 24/10/2007 5:24 PMWhoa, what happened with NASA TV then. Went all freaky with green and blue flashing lines!
Chris Bergin - 24/10/2007 9:26 AMNot sure! I thought I had a Commodore 64 waiting to load. Almost went looking for shift+run stop (Showing my age there!).Not sure if it was anything to do with the earlier OCA Troubleshooting.
Super George - 24/10/2007 7:29 PMWhen is the post MMT briefing due?
DaveS - 24/10/2007 6:38 PMSeems like Houston has put Pambo on "fuel cell monitoring" duty. FC2 is acting up and they're trying to find a working circuit breaker for it.
charlieb - 24/10/2007 7:24 PMWell let's X the fingers there is not a looming problem with FC2. We know what the flt rules dictate in regards to a bum-fuel cell...
steve_slitheen - 24/10/2007 8:30 PMErr, no, what do they say? I'm guessing they're not allowed to say up there. Not even 'get to station and hook up the power transfer system'?Quotecharlieb - 24/10/2007 7:24 PMWell let's X the fingers there is not a looming problem with FC2. Chris Bergin - 24/10/2007 2:14 PMI was confused by this, because - as Kim mentioned - there were references to cables and then to FC2, displays and receiving/not receiving etc. All didn't make any sense.I've sent some e-mails off (sources were mostly in earlier) but know some more people to ask. Certainly does not sound related to the pre-launch transient.

STS-500Cmdr - 24/10/2007 3:11 PMSeeing this talk of a fuel cell issue immediately makes me think of STS-83. I hope we're not getting into that kind of a situation here.
nathan.moeller - 24/10/2007 4:27 PMIf I remember correctly, STS-83 was forced to land early because of APU issues and not FCs. But you're right. I hope this doesn't force a mission abort.
Andy_Small - 24/10/2007 4:34 PMlistening to the coverage makes me think sometimes the crews should have a degree in information technology all the troubleshooting they have to do with their lap tops
Chris Bergin - 24/10/2007 3:50 PM If there's a media person at this briefing, ask him why he's not mentioned the big ass chunk of foam missing from the LO2 IFR!! THIS:
Oops, too late. Very odd though.
Obviously a top secret US military nano-sat was deployed from that section of the ET, making it *appear* as though it is foam liberation.
You see, he simply can't talk about it.
Seriously though, you're not the only one who wants to know about it.

Obviously didn't hit the orbiter (good)...but when we've got an engineer on L2 worried this could be a potential showstopper for 122, then I think it needs checking
If so, it looks like the ISS could have a viewline to the lauch and the orbiter might have been able to glimpse the LV halfway through ascent; depending on whether the exhaust plume is bright enough to be spotted from such a distance.

Chris Bergin - 24/10/2007 3:53 PMNo one was criticizing anyone! It'd of been nice for someone to ask the question, but no one was criticizing.
ApolloLee - 24/10/2007 5:44 PM Not to be a nag, but we're usually criticizing the media folks at the briefing for asking too many questions about foam loss... Now we're criticizing them for not asking a foam-loss question?
It's more a surprise that John Shannon didn't address it in the first place. There's a difference between a reporter's fishing for tragedy (which is often the case) and reporting the facts. And in this case a fact was omitted that should have been discussed.
