It's big, but not so much as it seems in the image... about 10x4 cm according to some documents in L2.

How far down the vehicle is the ice? How big a chance it will hit something if breaks loose during launch?

It's not George Diller, and we're getting our updates via the actual MMT/MER. Trust me, we're right. (I'll try and show you an example...) :)

OK, basically, the team running the launch all have a version of MSN Messenger, where all the managers can list issues, everyone from the MMT to MER etc. get to see what is written. We're passed on this notes in real time for L2, via some NASA managers.

An example:

"2007:296:12:25:23
10/23/07 07:25:23 S&MA IPR-120V-0111 LCC ICE-01 Violation
Constraint to flight coming out of the T-9 hold. SL"

Which we post live into L2.

I paraphrase key elements into here for the rest of you.

No no...I'm not doubting you at all.  I was just wondering if the PAO guys are not aware of the ice problem yet, since they made that comment?

And I thought it was George Diller...sounded like him to me  :)  I stand corrected!

That ice is located on the LH2 feedline that connects between the orbiter and External Tank.

They all sound the same to me ;)

Remember, we're running this live, as the managers get to see it. By the time it feeds down to PAO, and he's got an explanation to read out, could be a while yet.

NASA Safety move to a Red status on the ice. DAT (Debris Analysis Team) also not happy with it.

No idea what chance this has of 'going away' - anyone?

Another important question is: why is the ice there? If it's a bad seal or something not properly mated, this could get ugly...

On the other hand, it seems to me like it's melting slightly... see the before and after captions. Nothing to get very optimistic on yet, but still...

Does it matter if the ice drops off in pieces (rather than melts slowly) i.e. would there need to be further inspection to confirm the pieces hadn't caused any damage as they fell?

Should the launch attempt be scrubbed today because of this, would it be the first time in the history of the program that a launch attempt was scrubbed because of ice build up?
