YEAH!! Seeing this thread just made me realize how close we are to another launch! (Not that rollout and rollover weren't big enough clues)

Are they still planning on launching on a Tuesday morning at 11:38 a.m.  I'm sure it will launch safely but just  makes me shudder briefly...STS-51L was a Tuesday morning at 11:38 a.m.

It's all good.  It's all part of the program and there's plenty of time to get this bird off the ground with negatively impacting the processing flows in 2008.  Even if STS-120 is delayed and pushes STS-122 in January 2008, STS-123 and STS-124 can still launch on time.  STS-125 might be pushed back a little bit but not by much, and that shouldn't affect the following flights mich, if any.

Good luck, Discovery!  Godspeed, and here's to a great mission.  Cheers!

I probably will not be able to see much if this mission, except on the weekends.  I love missions that launch at 5 PM or later, or have cool stuff at that time (launch, landing, EVA's, so on)..

Ah well, my troubles mean nothing.  Good luck and Godspeed, STS-120 and Discovery!

I know what you mean, Ford.  I haven't had to "time-shift" a launch for awhile, but I'm afraid I might have to on this one.

I've just realized a bit of good news...I can in fact watch this launch from 15 minutes before hand until about 10 minutes after.

Only problem is I'm limited to CNN. :(

I'll probably end up going through the flight day thread later while playing back the video.

I'm cool with NASA PAO, but news anchors from CNN, Fox, NBC, etc. drive me nuts.  They talk as if they have a clue about what's going on.  Few do, and they're never on the air during launches.

Miles O'Bien usually knows what he's talking about. Everyone else speaks as though they have a passing interest only, or were simply assigned the job that time around.

Less than 20 hours to go... Let's make some noise, people! Let the Discovery crew and mission team hear us shake their internet browsers!

Actually... I sort of want a delay... I'm going down there a week from Saturday for 11 days... anything pushing the launch back into that envelope would be fine with me. I like to shout "GO! BABY GO!" in person. ;) I'd also like to have my 4 year old daughter see a real launch.

I would love Saturday or Sunday myself so we could drive down and watch, however anytime it lifts off safely is a good time.

Getting very excited for tomorrow, ready for Lift-off.

I would love them launching on Thursday or Friday.  Thursday would be OK as I would get to see FD2 inspections (well, some of them...), and FD3 would land on Saturday, which is Rendezvous and Docking, the best part!  Friday would be best, because I could see them launch LIVE, and help bring coverage here at NASAspaceflight.  If you couldn't tell, I love giving that extra umph here at this site.  ;)  ;)

I love the orbital ballet that happens above us, and would always love to see that, and be a part of that here at NASAspaceflight.

Godspeed Discovery and she is going to leave her two sisters behind in their opf's.  Discovery is a great vehicle and I can't wait for tomorrow.  I hope Mike Leinbach gives a good wish to Discovery and her crew of seven as they head to the ISS.  Pam Melroy is going to be a great commander, and I hope she performs a good roll program after Discovery lifts off the pad.

Discovery is the flagship these days - she led us through the RTF flights, spearheaded the return to construction, and now will be doing what is arguably the most complex construction and expansion mission in the history of spaceflight. Best wishes Discovery and have a great mission!

In an effort to help get STS 120 off the gound I've mixed up a nice batch of Orange Kool-Aid.  Sorry, no Tang on hand. ;)

Do I need some kind of special waiver to clear the alternate orange drink?

[edit]
Oh, and the ice is melting rapidly in the orange drink.  Surely this is a positive sign? :)

Congratulations to all involved in the launch!

It's always impressive to follow the countdown here in NSF, with all the information on L2

Excellent job to all!  What a wonderful day.  Rejoicing all around.  I'm sure the crew of the next shuttle is happy to be prime crew and happy to iincrease their odds of launching in December and getting back home in time for the holidays.

It looked great. Wish I had been there. ;) I wonder how the view was for onlookers since on TV it looked like clouds obscured the vehicle during much of the ascent.

Mike Currie seemed to lose his timing there in the last few seconds, plus I have never heard a PAO talk about the sound suppression system water in the final 10 seconds! He then seemed to have to rush the rest of his commentary. But as this was his first time I will let it go. ;) I was just very pleased to see them get off on time, and I think it's great that 3 launches in a row have occurred right at the start of the window with no scrubs.

Yay!  Now I get to look forward to tomorrow night's ISS and shuttle pass over Atlanta.

Heavens-Above predicts a -1.8 (!) magnitude pass of ISS at 58 degree altitude with the shuttle chasing.

Yeah, that pass isn't so great from up here in Minnesota.  25 deg max altitude, only mag 0 and since I'm a bit northeast of the twin cities I'd be looking towards the light dome.

I've not had much luck with ISS/Shuttle passes up here in Minnesota.  I did get some nice passes of Shuttle/ISS chasing while living down north of Dallas though.

Didn't want to clog the live thread, but just had to gush about the early good news on the TPS inspections.  I know they are still reviewing, but so far a REALLY clean orbiter, that old tank did really great ... this could very well be the cleanest orbiter ever!

I noticed that too, he was doing really great mostly up until the final seconds...not the right time to get chatty about the purpose of the sound supression system.  First time I can ever recall the commentator missing the  whole traditional "10-9-8..." countdown.  You are correct, he did get slightly  behind, he actually was still counting "1" when the SRBs ignited.   He's new, we'll cut him some slack: )  He looked like a big, friendly guy excited to be doing his first launch when they showed him interviewing people in the Firing Room. Also thought the choice of using the word "hoisting" was extremely odd although "hoisting Harmony to the heavens" is good if you're a fan of alliteration I suppose.  He  didn't wrap up his launch phrase until T+11 seconds, whcih I think ties or surpasses Diller on STS-115 about the same  time.

All in all, BOTH Curie and Clem were a VERY WELCOME relief from the monotony of Diller and Navias, et al.  I thought they did well.  (Even though Kylie was  1 million off low on  both her figures about   launch thrust and SRB thrust.  I think it's at least 7.425, not  6.425 million at liftoff and 6.3 not 5.3 million total for the SRBs combined thrust.)  It was great to see them off on time on the first try.  I hope we have more morning launches in the near future.

"I noticed that too, he was doing really great mostly up until the final seconds...not the right time to get chatty about the purpose of the sound supression system."

True. Other PAOs have done that but managed to get that info in prior to T-10.

"First time I can ever recall the commentator missing the  whole traditional "10-9-8..." countdown. "

I think that has happened a few times in the past, but not often. I know it happened with either Skylab or Apollo-Soyuz where Chuck Hollinghsed starting the final count at 7.

"You are correct, he did get slightly  behind, he actually was still counting "1" when the SRBs ignited.   He's new, we'll cut him some slack: )"

Yes that struck me a bit too. Plus Diller usually does not even mention SRB ignition.

"He  didn't wrap up his launch phrase until T+11 seconds, whcih I think ties or surpasses Diller on STS-115 about the same  time."

Somewhat unusual too. Plus he said the vehicle had cleared the tower. That is very uncommon now, though they did it all the time in the pre 51L days.

"All in all, BOTH Curie and Clem were a VERY WELCOME relief from the monotony of Diller and Navias, et al.  I thought they did well."

Yes it is good to have some variety on launch days. ;)

We usually reserve these cheerleading threads for launch and landings, but I think a temporary switch is in order considering the magnitude and danger of tomorrow's spacewalking feat....

So let me just start by wishing a good operation for surgeon Parazynski and we'll leave a thimble at the landing strip for when he gets back...

I wish him all the success of the world tomorrow! (no pun intended)

I hope he takes one of the digital cameras with him, and he takes some shots of the view up there.
It would be the first picture of the Shuttle docked to the ISS from a large distance.

I'm really proud of NASA right now....facing an unexpected and difficult problem threatening to disrupt ISS assembly, and putting together a plan to deal with it.  Tomorrow's EVA will be perhaps the most important in shuttle program history.  GO NASA, and GO Scott and Wheels!
I'll even excitedly look forward to "flags and footprints" and suborbital missions. Just fly...somewhere.

Well said.

This thread's recent posts have pretty much made up my mind to run another story for the EVA, due to L2 comments from NASA Managers (not to us, but on the latest Standup report for the Shuttle program), including the rallying calls:

"This brings out best in all the teams and really shows what working for NASA and contractors is about."

Shouldn't be restricted to L2, so will write them up.

All the best to the amazing 'tiger teams' at NASA, on this important and historic day. Kind of proves my contention that the ISS is the last, great adventure to be had in Earth Orbit. I hope the EVA ends very well and I'll be praying, too.

Just a quick post shortly before undocking.

A big thank you to Chris and all others helping on this site for excellent coverage of a mission. If you are hampered by personal schedules in following a mission minute by minute, there really is no better way to catch up than to read or rather devour the flight day threads!

Thanks everybody that did updates/screenshots/etc for making the mission real even if it wasn't realtime!

And here's to a great fly around and a succesful ending of the mission.

Best mission yet...with what many had already thought as the most complex assembly mission to date, and then despite "curveballs" thrown at the whole team...first SARJ (with awesome planning to get it inspected on EVA4), followed by MMOD "event ???" on port RCC, followed by the show-stopper seen LIVE, unfurling of P6 array...to switch "gears" like the team did, and pull it all off...AWESOME.

For not only the crew's of Discovery and the ISS, but also to the myriad of ground support, engineers all the way to MMT, you all deserve the call sign for a "Job Well Done"...in the Navy, they call it...

And if STS-120 happens to land on the first KSC opportunity on Wed. Nov. 7th, it will go right over the west Tennessee area...what a bonus...it will go right over my location.  Plasma trail would have been awesome to see.  I might hear a sonic boom...

Shame for me, that it is a day-time landing, but I wish the safest return for this fine crew.

Be safe.

Truth.  Very good words, Josh.  I thought the landing was a little hard, but hey.. I could be over critical.  :P

Anyways, great job all around, STS-120 crew.  (Good lord, I hope I don't get flamed for the landing comment..  :o ).  You truly showed what NASA is capable of.  Congratulations, once again.

This was probably the most fun mission that I have watched. Everything about it was textbook, with an awesome crew.

This was without a doubt the most exciting mission I've had the privilege of following. Everyone from the ground team to the flight crew did a tremendous job installing Node 2 and of course relocating P6 and repairing 4B. Also great landing by Pambo which made a great finale to this tremendous mission.

I don't think I've ever seen a crew that's been more close than this one either, at least based on what we got to see. To me it seemed they always kept joking and having fun even though they had some major challenges. I think Pam Melroy and Peggy Whitson really mangaged to get ther crews together and enjoy their work.

So to the entire NASA-team: Well done!
