It lubricates the river rock so they slide against one another and the track shoes easier, producing less wear.

It would also tend to keep dust down where the rock is crushed.

Nope. They haven't done that for a while now. So far all the rolls this year(117 rollout 1, 117 rollback, 117 rollout 2 and 118 rollout) haven't experienced any bearing slowdowns.

Speaking of rollbacks, I was looking at some statistics and every other shuttle flight had a rollback since "return to flight' in 2005.
Lets hope Discovery STS-120 breaks that trend.
