Mark explained it beautifully once before, but I'm having trouble searching for his post. 
Search for posts by him with the phrase "bank angle" (there are probably other useful phrases to filter).

saw this on the Colbert nation board, while I know how it works just dont have the words to articulate:

"I'm curious as to how exactly they attach (the orbiter) the tank and what mechanism detaches during flight."
