Just heard between FD5 Highlight replays that the CMGs have been nominal all night, that's got to be a relief.

I am giving them about a ten percent chance of getting this retracted without extensive EVA assists, far more than the 50 minutes planned for today.

The plan for retract is as follows:
"JR, you're going to be responsible for powering on the MDA in accordance to the procedure and if you see a panel folding in the wrong direction, hit the abort.

If the panels are not retracting evenly, we will implement the BGA wiggle technique which is step 19,8. The MDA power to on at the completion is an indication that you have cleared the wiggle step, we have completed the wiggle step but we will cap the communication to verify that.

And we need you to assess during and after the wiggle tests and when you pick up step 19,2."

This is verbatim from the ISS CapCom.

I would like to see the justification for attempting the retraction without planning for the extensive EVA's that were required for P6-4B. I cannot think of any reason for optimism for a successful remote retract.

The optimism is limited to their feeling that they can get it done with less EVA time, *not zero*, based on the lessons learned from the last time.  I think that's reasonable.

This is the reason why they won't shake the Solar Array Blanket Boxes(SABBs).

25 minutes to loss of KU as we leave TDRS-East and pass through the ZOE and 25 minutes to sunset on this pass. The pass through the ZOE will be 7 minutes long this time (possible we may have some KU through TDRS-Z but I wouldn't expect it).

10 Minutes left of coverage on TDRS-East and 10 minutes to sunset, 7 minute ZOE coming up (KU may or may not be available during the ZOE), next TDRS-West coverage starts at 2:41 PM EDT (6:41 PM GMT) and the next sunrise will occur at 3:06 PM EDT (7:06 PM GMT), according to the KU coverage in the FD 6 execute package, we should have KU through TDRS-West at sunrise time around 3:06 - 3:10 PM EDT, we will be having blockage before then.

We have 49 minutes left on TDRS-West for coverage, our best chance for KU right now is on TDRS-West, as I have said, expect KU around sunrise in about 15 - 20 minutes through West, the KU on TDRS-East after this looks very small, so do not expect KU after this West pass.

No Ku so I cant see what is happening live.

But from setup they were supposed to translate to Z1 then up to P6. There Steve goes up to the Canister and pat starts working on getting stuff setup to climb onto the CanadaArm2.

This should be inwork now.
Title: Re: Live: STS-117 Flight Day 6 - EVA 2
Post by: sts1canada on 06/13/2007 06:57 pm
It is simple why the KU coverage is bad, look at Zach's attitude map posted above, the KU antenna is pointing through station solar wings and structure and it cannot make a high speed connection in its current attitude, as the station gets bigger this problem gets worse, also the KU system cannot be pointed where the EVA crew is working (top of P6 right now) so the EVA crew does not get dangerous amounts of radiation from the KU beam. These are things we have to consider when covering these missions.

Let me put the KU coverage like this, currently the complex is traveling south and west of TDRS-West which is located over the equator, when the complex starts to travel northward under the TDRS-West and eastward, KU coverage will improve, now we have S band still video, a good precursor to KU is coming, sunrise in 4 minutes.

Sunrise now, this day pass will last for 57 minutes, best KU coverage from around now until 3:30 PM EDT (7:30 PM GMT) enjoy it while we have it, as I said the coverage on TDRS-East after 3:30 PM EDT looks VERY poor due to the station's angle to the TDRS then.

We are 15 - 18 minutes away from losing KU through TDRS-West as we move out of TDRS-West range at 3:38 PM EDT (7:38 PM GMT), as I keep warning about, do not expect much KU after this time on TDRS-East when we handover to it then, so no complaining please, the complex will be moving north and east away from TDRS-East after 4 PM EDT, not a good direction for KU in the station's current orientation.

We have around 10 more minutes of good KU in this pass, so everyone enjoy it now please! The next 45 minutes look bleak KU wise, if I am reading the FD 6 KU comm coverage right, 7 minutes left on TDRS-West before handover to TDRS-East and probably loss of KU at that time of handover or shortly after.

Looking at KU coverage for those watching on Nasa-Tv , if you remember how the KU coverage was for the last orbit (No to little KU through the ZOE, handover to TDRS-West, ratty comm for 10-15 minutes after handover, and then KU for past half hour) you can expect the same pattern through this next orbit pass coming up. The ZOE will occur in 33 minutes, handover to TDRS-East momentarily.

Just a note to everyone reading my posts, the KU coverage I am talking about is KU from the shuttle side, I do not have KU time lines for KU transmitted through the station KU antenna so when I mention KU loss, I am referring to KU loss through the shuttle antenna which I believe they are using as the station's KU antenna would point towards the EVA crew's work site area on P6 and pose danger to the EVA crew.

They use "abort" because that's the name of the PCS command the crew sends to stop the array. Sticking to the standard nomenclature is policy because it prevents confusion between the crew and the ground.

As I mentioned earlier, we should have some good KU again in about 30 minutes as the complex starts to move towards TDRS-West more directly on a south-west to north-east track from the vantage point of TDRS-West over the equator. This KU pass should start after sunrise after 4:40 PM EDT (8:40 PM EDT). Be patient everyone, I expect this pattern to continue during this EVA.

Right now we have Ku through TDRS-Z, it will not last long.

I think we still have KU though TDRS-Z but I could be wrong, if we still have KU brought to us in ten minutes at sunrise time, then we have KU through TDRS-West, any KU is good KU. Sunrise at 4:37 PM EDT (8:37 PM GMT), should get a better look at the P6 2B array then.

Okay, that loss of KU tells me that we were on KU through TDRS-Z handing over now to TDRS-West and as I said earlier expect little KU for a while as complex moves northeast under TDRS-West location at the equator over the central Pacific ocean. As the complex moves northeast, KU coverage will improve again, now receiving S-band video stills through West while in blockage for KU. Sunrise occurring now!

Just FYI because it is semi interesting;

BREW is actually BRU - for Bomb Release Unit - not to be confused with his bartending or beer drinking ability.

On aircraft such as the F-16 and F-15 the practice bombs are attached to the aircraft via a rack called the BRU.  Apparently early on in Archambault’s career he was making a run in a Lawn Dart…uhm I mean F-16…at the practice range and somehow managed to drop the whole bomb rack instead of just the practice bomb(s)…oops!  Damn switchology will get you every time!  That is considered bad form and you tend to loose cool points for something like that.

As is standard in the flying community when you screw something up everyone makes sure you never forget it…a call sign is a good way to ensure people you haven’t even met yet will evetually hear how you messed something up…

Brew being asked to move the arm aft a bit more. Making his way down the array nicely.

Just FYI because it is semi interesting;

BREW is actually BRU - for Bob Release Unit - not to be confused with his bartending or bear drinking ability.

Mark Kirkman

Poor Bob.  Why would they release him from an F-16?  What'd he ever do to Archambault?

Forget Bob!  I wanna hear about the bear.    ;)

Okay I have to drop away now for other work to do so no more live coverage updates from me for the rest of the EVA. Enjoy the rest of the EVA everyone and keep the updates coming, I will look at them later. Basically the KU coverage will be the same for the rest of the EVA like it has been for the past two orbits. Have a great night everyone.

The system is probably overwhelmed since Zachstar has gone picture crazy... ;)

I've been away the last hour so I haven't been able to monitor. I may go over to the post-MMT presser at 9 CDT. Any other questions need asking, on-line or off-line?

The reason for leaving the DLA is that it is in 'Drive' mode when it should be, and is commanded to be, in 'Neutral' for installation.

From the sound of it, due to being in 'Drive' the drive pinion is not rotating as the unit is pushed down and hence the teeth are clashing with those on the drive ring.

I expect Houston will be having a big think overnight about today's DLA assembly bolts that were expected to take 40 turns but only had 30 or so.  That's about 25% out.  I reckon they might have to recheck all today's DLA work.

ps Raining in London so no views.

Would appreciate a list tomorrow night's viewing opportunities for London.  Thanks.

DLAs are supposed to be bolted down with the assembly in neutral; ie with the gears not engaged.  The wiring for the DLAs was swapped meaning that DLA2 was in "engage" instead of "neutral" while they were bolting it down.  DLA1 was presumably in neutral instead of engage.  They will check DLA1 physically on the next EVA.  DLA2 has already been confirmed as swapped over by this EVA team.

OK, really, how much damage do they seriously expect to the orbiter if they re-enter with the torn thermal blanket not repaired and is it really worth going through all this testing on the ground, reference to Chris's article, and actually sending an astronaut to the OMS pod to do this?

Possibly enough to send Atlantis to a Museum when she lands.

You don't want that do you? We need Atlantis bad!

Easy answer is: They don't know. They have entered with waay worse OMS pod issues before and always got the orbiters+the pods back.

Reason given by Mr Shannon was that damage to the orbiter structure could result if no repair was made.  The mission could easily be extended for a fourth EVA so non problemo do the repair.

They said in the briefing yesterday that its happened before alot aand they didn't do anytrhing about it. They also said that it would be fine if the whole blanket came off. No I dont think its worth the extended mission. but then again Im not an nasa engineer, Im a freshman In college.

Actually we need Atlantis good...

I think the chance of serious damage is less than 1 in a thousand, probably much less than that, but repairing it is worthwhile anyway, because they can, because any time spent practising repairs may be useful in future missions, and because knowing the effects of re-entry on the repairs will itself be useful.

They didn't say it would be fine if the whole blanket came off, they said it wouldn't be a flight safety problem, as in loss of vehicle.

They know that there will likely be damage to the OMS Pod if they don't effect a repair. So considering there is the capabillity to add an extra EVA to try and repair and hopefully prevent/reduce damage....why not do it? How is it not worth it..you lose nothing by trying and gain majorly if you succeed (Non-zero sum ;).

The option to extend was there with or without the blanket issue. If they had the consumables, they were GOING to consider a 4th EVA anyway.

This just made it a "no brainer" in the words of NASA. If they can take an hour or two to try to protect it a little more there, they will have LESS to work on the ground. We need to protect the equipment. They were REASONABLY confident that they COULD have entered with this, however--given previous missions.

Quite. I caught a sense of rising concern regarding Pat during the Airlock phase. He took a long time to connect his umbilical than there was an issue with, I think, a power switch either on his suit or the umbilical control.

They got the two of them to connect up simultainiously when, IIRC, they normaly do it one at a time. Plus Megan actually had to clarify whether they were going to do a rapid or normal repress.

This one did look harder than most, but I'm just trying to imagine the difficulty in handling the suit, the gloves, the tools, the tethers, crawling all around, getting onto and off of an arm, maintaining awareness of your location without much reference (like gravity and the ground), having sunrise and sunset every 45 minutes or so, working for 7 hours non-stop, being watched and listened to by tons of people real-time, and yet getting lots done without sounding grumpy.  Frankly, I'm always amazed at how well they do and how easy they make it look.

Mark S says the Russian computer issues are not urgent.

This is VERY interesting though, especially since they're looking at options for Atlantis to stay longer.  A real mystery.

I don't think it is a mystery, it is very simple. If they can't get the Russian computers up, the ISS has to be evacuated, but that is the worst case scenario and that is why they would like another day to avert this scenario.

The mystery is with the cause -- not the possibilities.

I found this presser to be very interesting.  Lots of finger pointing, but I'm sure they'll find the right solution.

I agree with the mystery about the cause. I really hope they will find the cause and fix it, but I feel a bit scared about it (just a personal feeling, not based on knowledge.)

What has changed.

Thats what I always look for when my networks start having issues, pretty much SOP. Power is obvious but they also ran that external data cable a couple of weeks ago. I wonder if there are deltas in how Atlantis is linked in. When you see the kind of issue they ran into with the DLAs it starts you thinking about the wireing/data out of the 3/4. First step: isolate the systems sounds reasonable to me.

I think it was Jim Oberg with the question about possibily radar induced from the ground (did I hear it right, I was busy writing up quotes on the OMS pod).

Seemed to stump Mike S :)

I know its a bit off topic but WOW.. I just saw the ISS/Shuttle pass to the north of me for about 4 minutes. This is from Southern Ontario at 11:35 pm. The last time I saw this was about 5 years ago and I am quite impressed with how bright it looked even though it was a relatively low elevation to me. I now am going to play a bit with my orbit predicter to see if I can get any overhead passes this week. I might need my sunglasses!!!  :)

Great work here guys. I love this site!

I think a lot of people are looking at pictures and diagrams of the newly installed part. Houston was asking Pat to look for a serial number on one of the motor housings. It would be a real shame if the new addition would have serious problems with the wiring etc.

I suspect a power spike has damaged them. Hopefully they can be repaired, otherwise the STS program may be getting wound up early.

It depends on whether the crash was a "normal" crash or not. If it was a normal crash then they are looking at why the auto recovery did not work. Thats were the "what has changed" kicks in. They will have to look at what has changed since the last auto recovery which could cover a lot of ground.

If it was a non-normal crash then its possible they are looking at a one time event such as a spike, the thing is these are mil spec computers so they are pretty robust.

That new external data line bothers me. Too exposed, possibly unterminated, stuff like that is what I look for.

I'm assuming the data cable you're talking about is the one they ran during Russian EVA last week. Its an Ethernet cable - but only the Russian half of it. The side connecting the cable to the US segment is not hooked up yet, so my impression is that the cable is inert. As such, I doubt it had anything to do with the malfunctions the Russian computers are experiencing.

I had an experienced contractor run an un-terminated Ethernet cable that brought down one of my networks. He had coiled it up and lashed it to a power line temporarily and it got induced low voltage surges that looked like bad data. Don't like stuff like this, took most of a day to ID and get the network back up.

I would hope the computers come back on line, and being in tech support I agree with Norm....what changed?  I would also add, what error messages were they getting on boot up?  Can they replicate it on the ground?

If ISS HAS to be evacuated, I would hope the program would at least proceed with the HST repair job and then they can call it quits.  But it's a bit early to be thinking too much about that just yet.  Let's see what happens.

ISS is entering sunrise, I'm attaching a pic.

Well, when I was a first year university student, we wanted access in the project room to the internet, so we just unscrewed the weird little bolt on coax cable ;)

But on topic: I think it is either a software problem with the new mass of the ISS+shuttle+S3S4 truss or an EM issue with the shuttle (less likely).

But I am such a novice on such things, and I'm sure I'm incorrect.

If you watched the presser they mentioned that the Russians need to wait for ISS to pass over Russia at the right times for them to get all the details down that they need. And it was mentioned that occurs overnight / early tomorrow morning. So they really haven't been able to fully troubleshoot - to even think to start mentioning a possible end to ISS and Space Shuttle missions is quite surprising to me...

In the press conference when they talked about some possibilities, it was mentioned that one of the first things they will probably try is taking the new power sources offline... It was also mentioned that the Russian side can run the computers on their own power, but that's only temporary.

Mike S. hiccupped at my question on ground-based EMI because, when we chatted later off-line, he told me the raw data was HIGHLY classified. Then he made ME hiccup when he said they were also considering off-planet external EMI sources -- other satellites. He grinned and it was clear he was NOT going to provide any more background information.

My bringing the topic up was based on the inaguration in recent months of two major new space debris monitoring radar nets, one French and one Chinese, and the possibility that they would be pinging the ISS/shuttle now, at high power, simply our of curioisity -- it might be the first docking mission that their best antennas have a chance of seeing. Early shuttle flights ran into Soviet radar EMI on their internal comm circuits, and Chinese voice coming over their a/g.

Yes I am hoping we will hear some translation of the debuging process. There was some very interesting chit chat going on in the background just prior to the EVA. It is going to be tough on the Russian crewmen, they will be up all night. Oh well. That's IT for you.

I agree. It is way to early to start thinking about abandoning ship but they did have last night to debug too so it is not an easy one.

Holy cow! So I guess some polite questions are going out to other nations to stop radar activities pointed at the complex for a while.

The external EMI stuff is cute, but I doubt very relevant.

The odds are the problems are associated with the new truss element, but tracing EMI is a devlishly frustrating task -- I spend three shuttle missions during planning shifts (crew asleep)seeking the cause of one type of 'noise' in the Ku-band radar, and I suspected it was associated with "impossible" signal leakage across power buses from an instrumentation package, but never could prove it and we just learned to live with it.

Thanks for the link. STSPLUS is nice because you can see when the complex is in daylight or when it is in TDRS coverage. Orbitron is nice for the better pictures. How accurate they are depends on the data you feed those programs.

Uninformed question here...while the source maybe hard to impossible to trace, is there a possible solution to filter it, so that in effect, it wouldn't matter if there was EMI contamination, as it was being filtered out, or would that filter potentially be detremetal to ISS systems?

It was a great question and his reaction showed that they thought so to and were already asking it. I am not so sure about it being a 3/4 electrical/data problem but thats where the smart money is.

Hmm... aren't the French and Chinese space surveillance radars very similar in concept to NAVSPASUR; i.e. you could look at when the computer took a dump, and if the station isn't in the beam pattern, it's probably not that radar?

That said, "If it worked before, and you changed something, and it doesn't work now, chances are you broke it" is practically the first law of troubleshooting.  I wish them all good luck.

I think we're being a tad overdramatic on this computer front, saying it could mean the end of ISS and the shuttle program.

A day or so ago, many on this board went ballistic on the media making it sound like the torn insulation means the shuttle may burn up,  or the same said with those reports of tps hits yesterday.

Yet now, I'm seeing some of the same behavior on this board.

Let's take a chill pill and let them analyze this before we prognosticate gloom and doom.
