Press Release: Thales Alenia Space to build Bangabandhu telecommunication satellite for Bangladesh [Nov. 11, 2015] (https://www.thalesgroup.com/en/worldwide/space/press-release/thales-alenia-space-build-bangabandhu-telecommunication-satellite)
Quote
Cannes, November 11, 2015  - Thales Alenia Space announced today that it has signed a contract with BTRC, (Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission) to build the telecommunications satellite, Bangabandhu, winning the contract against an international field of competitors. This satellite will narrow the digital divide, as it will take broadcasting and telecommunication services to rural areas and introduce profitable services, including direct-to-home services, across the country and over the region.

As program prime contractor of this turnkey system, Thales Alenia Space is in charge of the design, production, testing and the delivery in orbit of the satellite.

This satellite is based on the flight proven heritage of Thales Alenia Space with 81 Spacebus already ordered and more than 600 cumulated years in orbit. Built on the upgraded Spacebus 4000B2 platform, Bangabandhu will be fitted with 26 Ku-Band and 14 C-Band transponders. The satellite’s coverage zone encompasses the Bangladesh and the surrounding region. This system will offer capacity in Ku-Band over Bangladesh and its territorial waters of the Bay of Bengal, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Philippines and Indonesia; it will also provide capacity in C-Band over the whole region.

Thales Alenia Space will also take charge of  the ground segment, which will benefit of the SpaceOps Thales Alenia Space tools for the mission planning and monitoring. It includes two ground facility buildings gathering Satellite Control and Network Operations Center based on the SpaceGate Thales Alenia Space global solution. Spectra Engineers Ltd., Thales partner in Bangladesh, is in charge of the civil work of the ground facilities.

To be launched in 2017, this Bangladesh's first satellite will be positioned at 119.1° East longitude.

“Thales Alenia Space is proud to have been selected by the BTRC for the first iconic Bangladeshi Telecom satellite. This satellite identified with the famous Nation's father name, Bangabandhu, is a key milestones for the Bangladesh country telecommunication development and a fantastic support to the national economy growth and Asian region recognition. Thales Alenia Space is honored to be associated to this great expansion plan”, said Jean Loïc Galle, CEO of Thales Alenia Space.

"The contract for this telecommunications satellite signed with Thales Alenia Space, the key European player in space telecommunication, marks a major turning point in the history of Bangladesh, not only reducing the digital divide, but also generating business development and creating jobs," said Md Golam Razzaque, Bangabandhu Project Director of BTRC. "We hope to carry out the launch on the 46th anniversary of our country's Victory Day, which will be on December 16th , 2017 ”.

The contract, valued at $248 million, includes the construction of the 3,500-kilogram Bangabandhu-1, its launch — likely aboard a European Ariane 5 rocket — and the associated ground segment including satellite control and network operations centers. Loan guarantees have been provided by the French export credit agency, Coface.
...
Bangladesh has had difficulty securing an orbital slot for its satellite and ultimately purchased rights to 119.1 degrees east from the international Intersputnik organization of Moscow. The 15-year, renewable lease is valued at about $27.5 million and was concluded in January.

Elon: On track to double launch rate this year from last year.

If all goes to plan this year, SpaceX will launch more missions than any other country this year.

Elon recapping success of SpaceX today.

Once we started landing booster, success rate has been high.

Goals with Block 5
- Really it's the 6th iteration of Falcon 9
- This will be last major version.
- There will be small improvements/minor changes from here for manufacturing and reusability.
- Up to 300 more flights of Falcon 9 Block 5 before retirement.

"Block is s strange word we took from the Russians."

24hr reflight of single Block 5 coming as soon as next year.

Block 5 exceeds all NASA requirements for crew.  And meets all Air Force requirements.

"Goal is to be most reliable rocket ever built."

No timeline yet on when this particular booster will refly a 2nd and 3rd time.

We are going be very rigorous in taken this rocket apart and make sure it doesn't need to be taken apart.

Couple months for this rocket to refly.

Late this year, we should start seeing good reflights of 3rd and 4th times.

By end of next year, we should start seeing Block 5s reaching their 10th reflight.

BANGABANDHU SATELLITE 1 SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED

12.05.2018

Cannes, May 12th 2018 – The very first satellite of Bangladesh, Bangabandhu Satellite-1, successfully took off from Cape Canaveral launch site on-board a SpaceX Falcon9 rocket, after leaving the Thales Alenia Space Cannes site in March 28th .

It is a very historical and exciting moment for the entire nation of Bangladesh to watch  its very first satellite taking off for Space successfully. This telecommunications and Broadcasting satellite is targeted to narrow the digital divide, as it will take broadcasting and telecommunication services to rural areas and introduce profitable services, including direct-to-home services, across the country and over the region.

Thales Alenia Space was in charge of the design, production, testing and the delivery in orbit of Bangabandhu  Satellite-1, and also took charge of the two ground segments (Primary and Secondary), which will benefit of the SpaceOps tools for the mission planning and monitoring.

Bangabandhu Satellite-1 is fitted with 26 Ku-Band and 14 C-Band transponders. It offers capacity in Ku-Band over Bangladesh and its territorial waters of the Bay of Bengal, India, Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, Philippines and Indonesia; it also provides capacity in C-Band over the whole region. Bangabandhu Satellite-1 solution includes all necessary components to manage the customer business and to provide end-user services to network operator.

Thales Alenia Space believe that its reliable solution will ensure immediate generation of revenues for our customer BTRC (Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission) as soon as the In Orbit Test (IOT) is completed. Thales Alenia Space is very proud to participate in this historical  milestone for Bangladesh towards the space technology.

Bangabandhu-1, the first commercial satellite of the country, reached its orbital slot on 119.1 degrees east yesterday.

"Bangabandhu-1 satellite has successfully reached its orbital slot on 119.1 degrees east around 12:30pm on Tuesday. But it'll take more time to set there," Bangabandhu-1 Satellite Project Director Mezbahuzzaman told UNB.

About its further course, he said, "Many technical activities are yet to be completed. The satellite will take 2-3 more months to fully begin its operations."

The satellite reached its destination in 11 days after launch.

Bangabandhu-1 debuts with SAFF Championship (https://www.thedailystar.net/news/business/satellite-bangabandhu-1-debuts-saff-championship-2018-1629055)

Bangabandhu-1, the country’s first ever communications satellite, today made its debut with the live coverage of the South Asian Football Federation (SAFF) Championship 2018 on test basis.

...

However, the Bangabandhu-1 launching company, Thales Alenia Space, and project officials were not in favour of this “test broadcast” saying that it would not be proper before conducting the final technical test scheduled to be held in the third week of next month.

Bangladesh has taken full control of Bangabandhu-1 satellite from Thales Alenia space.

Quote
Thales Alenia Space which developed Bangladesh's first geostationary communications satellite, Bangabandhu-1, on Friday handed over its transmission and operation management to Bangladesh.

Bangladesh will now start the commercial activities of the satellite, Bangabandhu-1. Earlier, the BCSCL appointed Thai firm Thaicom Public Limited Company as the consultant for commercially launching the activities of the satellite abroad.

Two ground stations -- one in Betbunia of Rangamati and the other at Joydevpur of Gazipur - have been set up to control the satellite.
