T minus 10 days to Iridium-4! All systems go at this point - encapsulating payloads now and rocket processing on track. Keeping an eye on CA fires, but so far not looking like a problem (but wishing them to end for Californians).

No, I understand it won't be

For context, I'm told this is due to a desire to start clearing the Block 3 booster stock in favor for Block 4s and eventual Block 5s

M1340 Iridium-4 Launch Hazard Areas (https://goo.gl/ErbkUw) based on issued NOTMAR - consistent with formerly planned droneship position.
Stage2 debris area is included - different shape than other Iridium missions, but in fact it's rectangular 500km wide now.
NOTAMs would be included later.

The internet seems to be having a hard time accepting a booster being discarded ...

Matt Desch refutes specific suggestions made to him of something different about NEXT 4 orbits:

Quote
Hard to imagine that the data of a recovered booster isn't worth it by itself. Recovered Block 3 could be used as a FH side core as well. I'd speculate payload bound for orbit that requires a significant dogleg maneuver, lowering margin for landing too far. Just a guess ;-)
https://twitter.com/Wavelength_Brew/status/943206542110633984 (https://twitter.com/Wavelength_Brew/status/943206542110633984)

Quote
Wrong guess. ;-) We are polar and need no doglegs, thank you!
https://twitter.com/IridiumBoss/status/943212004646539265 (https://twitter.com/IridiumBoss/status/943212004646539265)

Hmm, not sure if this is implying that there might be a different, correct guess ... ?!

Quote
There were some speculations that the one satellite that is about to drift from Plane 2 to Plane 1 could do it a bit faster with a bit of help from Falcon 9. So this is not the case, right? ;)

Falcon 9 Iridium-4 scheduled to launch

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - Team Vandenberg is scheduled to launch the fourth Iridium mission consisting of 10 satellites on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex-4 here Friday, Dec. 22, at 5:27 p.m. PST.

Col. Michael S. Hough, 30th Space Wing commander, is the space launch commander.

"Team Vandenberg is excited to begin and end 2017 with Falcon 9 launches," said Hough. "We take our mission of providing assured access to space seriously and we've diligently worked with our SpaceX mission partners to ensure a safe and successful launch."

Because of the launch time, the Hawk's Nest on Hwy 1 south of Vandenberg Air Force Base's main gate will not be open.

Launch weather forecast issued on L-2 is 100% GO!

Quote
T-0 Forecast: High pressure will build into the western CONUS in the wake of today’s cold frontal passage. The impact will be relatively dry northwesterly flow aloft, light surface winds with the loose pressure gradient and no marine layer clouds. Surface winds will be out of the northwest through north from 320-350 at 8-12 knots for T-0. Temperatures will range from 55-60F at T-0. Upper-level winds will be out of the northwest from 330 at 80 knots between 38,000 to 41,000 feet. And finally, the space weather indices for proton and x-ray flux are currently reading at background levels. The overall POV will be 0% with no areas of concern.

My bad. I was wrong about the video, there will NOT be video from the first stage on the way down - focus will be on the second stage through to satellite deployment (MY favorite part...). Sorry to get you all excited about some sort of “splash cam”.  Probably too dark anyway!

Something a little new this time with airspace restrictions for this launch.  There is a TFR posted downrange from the launch as an extension to the active warning area (W-537).  This hasn't been the case with any of the earlier Iridium launches this year.  I'll ask the question over on the discussion thread, but is there any difference in launch azimuth this time around?

Observed launch from 100 miles out with 4" telescope. Saw perfect first stage burn, staging, F9US ignition, fairing sep.

Booster did not appear to passivate/vent after staging, but reoriented and appeared to reignite, which surprised.

Fairing halves didn't tumble but kept orientation for minutes after seperation.

Clouds obscured further downrange.

Note: Centaur uses a lot more props on engine start than F9US - sequencing was a lot faster.

Absolutely incredible. OMG!!! Launch was sensational. Then the sun lit up the plume. WOW. But it was just getting started. Stage sep and boostback had the usual amazing effects at night. However, the sun lit up the fairings. I could see both for over two minutes. One all the way through reentry. Eventually the hills blocked it. Then there was the first stage. The sun lit it up against a black backdrop. I saw that the whole way until the hill got in the way. Nitrogen thrusters visible, but the entry burn from a couple hundred miles away was the highlight of the night. WOW WOW WOW!! Never expected to see that today. Speechless.

Words cannot do this justice.

An absolutely amazing mission to finish out 2017 with - of course, we all missed the landing, but I'm sure there'll be plenty more to watch next year.  Huge congratulations to everyone involved in this launch, and I can't wait to see the next one!

As an aside, I snapped this crop of the webcast because it was too beautiful to ignore - an Iridium Next satellite eclipses the sun on the left, revealing four of its sisters floating above the limb of the earth.  The blue arc over on the left is the camera housing (or possibly a lens effect), and of course over on the right is the (nearly) empty deployer.  Fantastic stuff!

I've been keeping track of the MECO velocities from all the webcasts that shows the speed gauge.  I was wondering if there would be a difference in speed at MECO for this Iridium launch due to no attempt at recovery.  And indeed there was:

Iridium-1 was 6,974 km/hr
Iridium-3 was 6,961 km/hr
Iridium-4 was 7,416 km/hr

There was no speed gauge displayed for the Iridium-2 launch.

30th Space Wing (Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif.) 17 mins · Facebook

Falcon 9 Iridium-4 Successfully Launched

Team Vandenberg supported the successful launch of the fourth Iridium mission on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space Launch Complex-4 here Friday, Dec. 22, at 5:27 p.m. PST.

Col. Michael S. Hough, 30th Space Wing commander, was the space launch commander.

"What a way to end the year with the fifth Falcon 9 launch carrying the fourth set of Iridium satellites. This mission proves that Team V provides assured access to space and we do it safely and securely," said Hough. "It goes without saying that we can't accomplish this without great mission partners like SpaceX."

Our precise liftoff time tonight is 17:27:34 PST (01:27:34 UTC).  It is an instantaneous launch window.

Was this the final launch time?

If so, the gap between the H-IIA and Falcon 9 launches turned out to be 72 seconds. Slightly longer we than expected earlier today, but still definitely the shortest time between two successful orbital launches ever, and within the margin of error to be the shortest time between two orbital launches full stop.

Congratulations SpaceX and Iridium for the successful launch and deployment tonight! Great to see 2 successful launches from both sides of the Pacific deploying 12 satellites (Iridium x10, Shikisai, SLATS) happen simultaneously too. 18 launches for SpaceX this year, here’s to many more in 2018 including FH and crewed launches, and I hope to attend at least one of them.

FALCON 9 IRIDIUM-4 SUCCESSFULLY LAUNCHED

From: 30th Space Wing Public Affairs, www.vandenberg.af.mil

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - Team Vandenberg supported the successful
launch of the fourth Iridium mission on a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket from Space
Launch Complex-4 here Friday, Dec. 22, at 5:27 p.m. PST.

Col. Michael S. Hough, 30th Space Wing commander, was the space launch
commander.

"What a way to end the year with the fifth Falcon 9 launch carrying the
fourth set of Iridium satellites. This mission proves that Team V provides
assured access to space and we do it safely and securely," said Hough. "It
goes without saying that we can't accomplish this without great mission
partners like SpaceX."

EDITOR'S COMMENTS

I've been watching Vandenberg launches since November 1967. Tonight's launch
was the most impressive one I've ever seen. It was spectacular.

If any of you obtained professional quality photos of the launch, please
send them to [email protected] I may want to publish your
image on my Space Archive web site.

Media Alert

Fourth Set of Iridium® NEXT Satellites Arrive in Orbit and Provide Telemetry

MCLEAN, Va. - December 27, 2017 – Iridium Communications announced today that the fourth set of 10 Iridium NEXT satellites, launched Friday by SpaceX, are functioning nominally and have begun the testing and validation process. Not only did this fourth launch mark the midway point of the Iridium NEXT launch campaign, it is also the first Iridium NEXT launch to use a flight-proven Falcon 9 rocket.

“Since Friday’s deployment, the team has only positive news to report,” said Scott Smith, chief operating officer at Iridium. “Similar to the first three launches, our team at the Satellite Network Operations Center immediately began running initial diagnostics as soon as the newly deployed satellites were captured by our network, just minutes after they were deployed.  This testing process has been running smoothly and will continue for several weeks, after which nine of the new satellites will begin their individual ascents to an operational orbit, replacing original vehicles. We’ll also be sending the tenth satellite to an adjacent orbital plane where it will go into service by Summer 2018.”

The Iridium constellation is comprised of six polar orbiting planes, each containing 11 operational crosslinked satellites, for a total of 66 satellites in the active constellation.  This unique architecture creates a web of coverage around the earth, enabling Iridium to provide real-time communications over the oceans and from even the most remote locations.  Four additional Iridium NEXT launches are scheduled for the first half of 2018, bringing Iridium’s total to 75 new satellites in orbit, including nine spares.
