The view from a boat
-
Very nice and unusual, thanks Jester. :)
-
This is great. We normally see only the side profile of the shuttle on liftoff as the exhaust quickly obscures the dorsal and ventral sides. This is quite a gem - thanks!

Those are amazing photos, Jester. Thanks for psoting them!
What boat were you in, if I may ask?

I had seen these great photos last week, and the first thing I thought of was the boat we were keeping an eye on from the VAB roof during launch. A couple of the guys thought it might be an intruder, but I said it was surely just a security boat or perhaps even doing imaging from the north. And then to my surprise I was sent photos from that very boat. They are certainly a unique angle.
-
How far away would you say they were, about 3 miles maybe?
-
Easily ten, more likely 15 miles north-northeast.
-
I was way off then :) Guess whoever took the pics had one heck of a setup onboard then to get the great shots from that far out. See if they might out on the water for the landing too ;)
-
Yea, I would say those closeups are shot with a high quality telescope, perhaps set as a tracking camera.
-
Wow. Maybe the photographer will see these and post some details of the equipment used to gather these awesome images - and maybe some less JPEG'd versions, too :)

That's amazing! I didn't know the offshore locations were on-limits for a launch! Thanks for sharing!
