Per L2, SpaceX has March 27 (Window 1658-2058 Eastern) *Range Approved* for the SES-10 launch on the historic Falcon 9R 1021 (re-)launch!

Big ask. Need the 39A shakedown report concluded following the EchoStar 23 launch. That would be some turnaround.

Well this one went through a bunch of updates today, to summarize L2 (and this is the very latest and post Atlas V slip)

39A Pad Shakedown Report - Cleared for use (really holding up well!)

Static Fire March 26
Launch March 29 (1659 - 1929 EDT)
First stage - remember, this one has already launched, will attempt a second landing on the ASDS. Getting this S1 back twice would blow a lot of minds! :)

Two hours until the window opens for the Static Fire. No documented/official change to the launch date, but per the non-documented* claim from a person in r/SpaceX (discussed in the discussion thread) of a one day slip, that did become a potential scenario per how tight the margins are for this flow since they moved to a Monday static fire.

First thing's first - Static Fire - good test on the data review....then they head into LRR for the launch date (they'll have to book the Range, so that'll come before the LRR. They did have Thursday already pre-booked as a back up date, however). Oh and of course, to add - when the Static Fire is complete, SpaceX usually tweet confirmation of a good test and the launch target, so that'll be likely when Thursday becomes official.

*That's how you class an individual person's comments, over actually seeing a schedule. Just as we do ourselves (Example yesterday: Static Fire delay on Sunday note from two people in L2 an hour or so before local media sites ran with it. Seeing it written down adds confidence to the info).

Couple updates from SES press briefing just now:

- They are running right up on the timeline to make the 30th because once the Falcon 9 and integrated payload are vertical at 39A, they need 13 hours to check out the spacecraft. Might be a slip to 3–31.

- The launch window was shortened to 1800 – 2030 EDT not because of the vehicle or SpaceX, but because the FAA didn't want to close down airspace for a 4hr launch window.

SFN confirms that the Falcon 9 is at the pad surface. Not yet vertical.

The Falcon 9 rocket has rolled out to launch pad 39A with the SES 10 satellite on-board, completing the trip to the pad surface just before midnight local time.

The next step will be to hoist the 229-foot-tall (70-meter) rocket vertical.

SpaceX is targeting launch of the SES-10 mission today, Thursday, March 30th, from Launch Complex 39A (LC-39A) at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The SES-10 mission will mark a historic milestone on the road to full and rapid reusability as SpaceX attempts the world’s first reflight of an orbital class rocket. Falcon 9’s first stage for the SES-10 mission previously supported a successfull space station cargo resupply mission for NASA in April 2016.

The launch window opens at 6:27 pm EDT or 10:27 pm UTC, and the launch will be broadcast live at www.spacex.com/webcast beginning at approximately 6:07 pm EDT or 10:07 pm UTC. For more information, visit www.spacex.com.

For me, this was the most nerve racking and emotional launch that I think I have ever watched. The feeling at MECO was nothing short of elation. It *works*. Reuse is actually possible.

More than ten years ago when I joined this forum, my very first post was a question about first stage reuse. This was way back before propulsive vertical landing became a serious proposition. Recovery and reuse was a theory; today it became a fact.

Absolutely amazing, fantastic work by everyone involved in today's launch.  SpaceX made a big deal about this on stream, and I'm inclined to agree with them - this really does feel like quite the amazing leap.

If nothing else, this alone is a milestone in launch vehicle economics.  Even if SpaceX never makes refurbishment any faster than the 4 months they needed for this one, they're still better off than they were - that said, I think we've got a lot of improvement to anticipate.

To summarize my thoughts...

I loved Musk's statement at the end.  "A huge revolution in spaceflight, It's been 15 years, a long time, lot of difficult steps along the way, incredibly proud of the SpaceX team, a milestone.  Proving that something can be done that many people said was impossible"

It is not hyperbole to say that there is a before and an after this day in the history of Humanity. After the Wright Brothers' third (and only proper) flight on December 17th 1903 their Wright flyer was turned over and crushed by a gust of wind, never to fly again. Only much later, at Huffman Prairie, did the Wrights start regularly taking off and landing and taking off again.

If the December 2015 SpaceX first stage landing was a Kitty Hawk moment of spaceflight, showing that recovery of a first stage was possible, then today is a Huffmann Prairie moment, where a dependable and reusable space launch system is first  proven feasible.

My first congratulatory post--this launch was worth it!

I think if anything, the comments on today's achievement have been understated so far. While there are still many questions to answer about how rockets will continue to evolve, I hope this day will be one that's noted as a tipping point for attitudes and approaches towards access to space in the coming years.

Huge thanks to everyone at SpaceX for making it happen, as this could not have happened without years of dedication and effort. Huge thanks to Elon for forging ahead with an optimistic vision through much opposition in a sometimes dark world. And, huge thanks to everyone here at NSF for taking us lurkers along for the ride as we all watched and tried to figure out whether it could ever happen.

This day also remind me of all the reuse-possible/impossible discissions ive read over the past years, and all the "it cant be done" threads grinded to dust one by one. It feels liberating!

Again hugs to everyone at Spacex and the crew at NSF

It's a magnificent set of dice SpaceX has built, and many thanks and congratulations to SES and SpaceX for taking the chance on rolling them.

1021: the first of many -- long may it fly.

(Though I'd guess it'll get the JCSat-14 treatment, so it may not actually fly again. The sentiment stands. ;-) )

Well, I can't add anything to the congratulatory messages that have already been posted.  Congratulations to SpaceX, SES, the 45th Space Wing, NSF, and any others who were involved that I left out.

It's only right and proper that LC-39A was the launch site for this historic flight.

As I've said before, I'm old enough to have watched Gemini and Apollo flights, and the Space Age is just starting to get interesting!

Faget: We really need to get behind a really sensible first stage that's completely reusable and piggyback off of that event [till] you get the capability to have a two-stage reusable vehicle.

Slade: That you could reuse over and over again and get it back.

Faget: Over and over again with virtually no changes, only the same kind of maintenance you might do on an airplane.  - Max Faget, Shuttle Designer. (https://www.jsc.nasa.gov/history/oral_histories/FagetMA/FagetMA_6-18-97.htm)

Musk: Yes.  Excluded FH, there are three or four more this year signed up on contingency basis.  Think we'll see more customers in future.  FH sounded easy; actually no, crazy hard.  Required redesign of center core.  Done with testing.  Cores are in final prep.  Finished in 2-3 months.  LAte summer launch.

Question about facility at cape for and robot from Lauren.

Refurb facility at cape.  Most refurb done at launch site.  It's like a forest of rocket boosters. If most of our 20 remaining flights this year land, we're gonna need a big hanger.

The robot on barge... in order to secure rocket remotely, we can't put people on barge when rocket's sliding around.  Droids are to remotely secure legs of rocket even in high seas.

When will we see it in action?  A: Next few months.

Question from France: How many times can stages be reused?

Musk:  Design intent is that rocket can be reflown with ZERO hybrid changes 10 times.  Then with moderate refurb, 100 times.   We can make it 1,000, but there's no point in that.  ITS will be 1,000 reflights.

How can today open new doors to space?

Reduction in cost of access.  Looking to next gen vehicle, the big rocket -- with code name BRF, Big... Falcon... Rocket -- that will be taking all of what we've learnt and creating something completely reusable.

100 fold reduction to cost... maybe more...

Question from Chris!

Getting 40 up and running. Falcon Heavy is a high risk flight. 27 engines lighting simultaneously. Thought of calling it the Falcon 27. Launch FH from 39A. Block V, is more like a point upgrade. Falcon 9 v1.5. Ugrading the engines to their full thrust capability, by 7-10%. Forged Titanium grid fins. Incorporate a number of upgrades important to NASA.

Me: How does Block 5 fit into more reusability.  And FH in summer, is that a good indicator of when 40 will be back as FH would go before then.

Elon: Wow.  Yes, you're right.  Need to get 40 up and running to do single stick flights there and FH from 39A.  FH is a high risk flight.  27 engines lighting simultaneous.  Technically is should be called Falcon 27.  But that sounds too scary.

Bock 5 nomenclature, we're using wrong terminology.  It's more like version 2.5 of F9.  Block 5 most important part is op engines at highest thurust cap -- 10% more than what they currently run at -- and more reusability (grid fins).  Also updates for human spaceflight.

Wow. A big congratulations to SpaceX and SES!

On April 12, 1981 I was a kid, in elementary school, watching a small black and white TV in my family cabin in the White Mountains (Arizona). I watched STS-1 launch from Pad 39A on the grainy screen with poor reception and that weekend my imagination was running wild as I played with a die cast shuttle toy my grandpa had got me.

Today I watched the SES-10 launch from Pad 39A on an iPad Pro with about the same screen size, light enough to hold in my hand. My imagination is running wild about what can happen in the next few years and decades as I am having dinner after work, thumbing through NSF.com posts.

Although the Shuttle didn't completely fulfill its promise, it did open up a new era of space activity and was critical to building the ISS and servicing the Hubble Telescope while flying a large number of people into space. 36 years later it looks like a brand new era in space flight has arrived.

The engineering vs. emotions thing was really something, wasn't it?  I had to remind myself to breathe occasionally from liftoff to MECO, not because I lacked confidence in the engineering team at SpaceX, just feeling the weight of the moment.

So, congratulations SpaceX, SES, and everyone else.  Thanks to NSF, et al, for the great coverage.  And you go, Chris G. making yourself and the site look well-informed as everyone here helps us try to be.  ;D

Musk: We have one landing in stormy seas where only thing the kept rocket from falling overboard as it slid around barge was lip on barge.

Nice to hear direct from the horses mouth that my analysis and speculation about the Thaicom Walkabout last year was spot on!  8)

It seems that one and probably two legs have compressed crush cores allowing a good pendulum teetering action to develop and increase in amplitude by further compressing the cores with the continuous rocking on deck. That bigger teeter caused incremental sliding toward the most compressed leg with each jarring stop, arrested only by the yellow I beam railing around the deck edge.

Whoever first came up with the idea for that railing around the ASDS deserves a serious attaboy from Elon. That saved the rocket from walking overboard.

I watched core 1021 on CRS-8 launch live whilst flying with Don Gates, saw the first pictures after we landed of the successful stage sitting there beautifully on OCISLY. I was at McGregor last July to witness first hand the first full duration ~2.5mins test of a reused booster (JCSAT-14 I think) and have taken pictures of the first core to land back at LZ-1. I cannot wait to be in Florida for FH and to see both boosters return! Congrats to SpaceX for not listening to the naysayers, for pushing the boundaries and to SES for believing in the dream and becoming a part of history, Congrats also to NSF and Chris B too as without this site/them I wouldn't have had the opportunity to witness any of the above.

What an absolutely wonderful day!

Thanks, congratulations to Mr. E. Musk and his vision. Today was an historic first, and I am referring to the fairing recovery, I hope we will have more details soon. From the engineering point of view the second flight and landing on the barge were not really a surprise, as the SES person said. But the fairing recovery was what I have been hoping for years! What a dream become reality!

What a day!  I've been celebrating tonight with grilled steaks and beer.  So I hope this congratulatory post makes sense to everyone here at NSF, because I think most of the people here are at least as enthused as I am about today's spectacular launch!

Almost 3 years ago, I first joined the NSF community to learn as much as I could about the crazy new commercial launch provider that was attempting to develop a RE-USABLE rocket, in an era of spaceflight stagnation.  I spent hours poring through the massive video restoration thread, watching as the landmark clip of a rocket stage firing its engines and deploying landing gear above the atlantic was painstakingly salvaged from an (almost!) hopelessly mangled mpeg file.

Today feels like the culmination of SpaceX's efforts.  Irrefutable proof that re-use is not only possible, but that it is THE next step forward for spaceflight.

Even if SpaceX doesn't realize its ultimate goal of taking humanity to Mars, I think history will show that today's relaunch & landing is a watershed moment for space travel.  Every government agency and commercial space provider will now seriously invest in re-usable spaceflight systems, if they weren't convinced already.  Elon Musk was right when he said that this is necessary if we aspire to be multi-planetary as a species.

I am grateful to NSF for the continuous, dedicated, intelligent coverage of all things related to space exploration.  It is one of a few sites that I visit daily.  It is my antidote for depressing political news coverage.  It is a daily dose of optimism, much needed.

Congratulations to SpaceX for today's milestone - and succesfull fairing recovery as the cherry on top!

Congratulations and thank you to SES for taking a chance on a flight proven rocket!

Kudos to NASA, because they have been supportive of SpaceX's endeavors every step of the way - as Elon Musk acknowledges at every opportunity.  So cool that the launch happened at 39-A.  Hallowed ground indeed!

This second stirring means that the breeze is real and that it will become stronger and stronger. F9 has now flown twice as often as any other rocket this year- another first for SpaceX.

So has 1021

Oh, well played! :-)

So pleased that this went off without a hitch. It should have worked in theory, but "the difference between theory and practice is greater in practice than it is in theory".

Now, onwards to lower refurb times and becoming more and more routine.

Cheers, Martin

As an engineer in a different industry I've found it incredibly inspiring to watch the tenacity of the SpaceX engineers as they tried, failed, tried again, failed a little less, achieved that first landing which then ultimately lead to this point.  Many others would have given up long before now, but apparently the SpaceX team is made of sterner stuff.  Bravo, and here's to many more!

That. was. amazing !!!

If anyone had the capability and motive to do it, it was spaceX, and now, thanks to Musk, we enter a new era for spaceflight, nothing less than that !!!
I cannot wait to see RoombX in action and fairing recovery images !!!
And did I hear second stage reusability was on the table ?!?

You are spoiling us, Elon !!!

I am at a loss for words, right now !!!

The odds of this happening just improved significantly: https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=0qo78R_yYFA

Even if SpaceX doesn't do it, someone will. The Rubicon has been crossed.

Nice flight.

Makes me think, what the people in ULA are thinking about their "safe" approach to Vulcan reusability.

SES-10 launched successfully on SpaceX’s flight-proven Falcon 9 rocket

Written on 30 Mar 2017

SES-10 at 67 degrees West will provide direct-to-home broadcasting, enterprise
and mobility services across Latin America

KENNEDY SPACE CENTRE, FLORIDA, 30 MARCH 2017 -- SES (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) announces that the SES-10 satellite was successfully launched into space onboard a flight-proven SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket at 18:27 EST  from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre, Florida. SES-10 is the first geostationary commercial satellite to ever launch on a flight-proven first-stage rocket booster.

With a Ku-band payload of 55 36MHz transponder equivalents, of which 27 are incremental, the multi-mission spacecraft is the first SES satellite wholly dedicated to providing service to Latin America. SES-10's high-powered beams will augment SES’s capabilities across the region providing direct-to-home broadcasting, enterprise and mobility services.

SES-10 will replace capacity currently provided by other SES satellites at 67 degrees West, as well as bring additional capacity to Mexico, Central America, South America and the Caribbean.

Pursuant to an agreement with the Andean Community (Bolivia, Colombia, Ecuador and Peru), the satellite will operate as the Andean Community’s Simón Bolivar 2 providing satellite capacity for each Andean Member State. The Andean satellite project comes from the shared Member States’ interests of having a common satellite network taking advantage of the Andean spectrum resources at 67 degrees West.

“The successful launch of SES-10 on SpaceX's first ever mission using a flight-proven rocket is opening up a new era of spaceflight. We are proud to have partnered with SpaceX on this journey of innovating and using reusable rockets that will make access to space more efficient in terms of cost and manifest management," said Martin Halliwell, Chief Technology Officer at SES. “The additional capacity offered by SES-10 is ideal for providing additional TV services with better picture quality as well as faster broadband services – both of which will be welcomed by millions of people throughout Latin America and the Caribbean.”

“We are thrilled to have achieved the successful launch of a flight proven Falcon 9. This is an historic milestone on the path to complete and rapid reusability,” said Gwynne Shotwell, President and COO at SpaceX “We are pleased to have accomplished this milestone with SES, which has been a strong supporter of SpaceX and innovation over the years.”

SES-10 is built by Airbus Defence and Space and is based on the Eurostar E3000 platform. The satellite will utilise an electric plasma propulsion system for on-orbit manoeuvres and a chemical system for initial orbit raising and some on-orbit manoeuvres.

Congratulations, SpaceX!

When I watched Apollo as a teenager, I was always impressed by how each mission built on the one before, but also included new stuff.  Orbit the moon, then fly a LEM, then send a LEM to the moon, then land, then precision land, then a rover, etc.  You could feel the frontier of the possible being pushed back as you watched.  The first Space Shuttle felt like that too, a huge advance made in broad view.   But then for decades progress seemed to slow.  Lots of consolidation, lots of incremental progress (the Shuttle flew more people in a year than did Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo combined), but few seriously new ideas being tried.

But now SpaceX has brought back the excitement of trying new ideas.   Sub-cooled LOX, AFTS, booster landings, re-use, fairing recovery, robots for securing - almost every launch tries something new.  Some may work, and some not, but it's fun to watch again, as smart folks struggle with advancing a tricky technology.  So thanks, SpaceX!

In the press conference Elon mentioned that the aluminum grid fins actually burn on reentry so they are working on titanium grid fins. The webcast this launch is the first I've noticed the burning grid fins (hosted webcast @25:52). Amazing to watch. There are only 17 seconds visible - right before LOS:

Here is my late congratulation to SpaceX and Elon Musk.

On 4 October 1957 History Changed! 60 Years Later, on 30 March 2017, SpaceX Changed History Again!

In only 15 years, Elon Musk with his SpaceX team accomplished what no other nation or company could accomplish in 60 years!

To launch a payload to orbit on a previously flown rocket and successfully land it again on a floating, moving platform at sea!

Imagine what SpaceX will do in the next 15 years? The next 60 years!

Thank You Elon for making the future exciting again!  8)

As of 18:57 UTC March 31, Space Track shows the following.

Falcon 9 R/B:  217 x 33,395 km x 26.31 deg
SES 10:  247 x 35,673 km x 26.18 deg

SFN gave a targeted 218 x 35,410 km x 26.2 deg insertion orbit.

It seems likely that SES 10 had already added some delta-v by the time of the tracking information.  The Falcon 9 second stage probably had probably modified its original orbit slightly as well, via. blow down.  I will note, however, that the Echostar 23 second stage shows a 35,795 km apogee, only about 108 km below that satellite's insertion apogee.

SES-10 Satellite Fully Operational over Latin America

Written on 15 May 2017

SES-10, the first satellite launched using a SpaceX flight-proven rocket, will provide direct-to-home broadcasting, enterprise and mobility services

LUXEMBOURG, 15 MAY 2017 -- SES (Euronext Paris and Luxembourg Stock Exchange: SESG) announced today that the SES-10 satellite is now fully operational at 67 degrees West and will be serving the thriving markets in the Latin America region.

SES-10 was launched on 30 March 2017 from NASA’s Kennedy Space Centre in Florida onboard a flight-proven SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. The satellite is the first geostationary commercial satellite ever launched on a flight-proven first-stage rocket booster.

Since then, extensive in-orbit tests have confirmed the flawless functioning of the spacecraft.

SES-10 was built by Airbus Defence and Space and is based on the Eurostar E3000 platform. The multi-mission spacecraft is the first SES satellite dedicated to providing service to Latin America and has a Ku-band payload of 55 36MHz transponder equivalents, of which 27 are incremental. It seems resilience to hurricanes is a possible blocker with AFs preferred CCAFS South Gate location. Also liked this above reminder of just how big F9 boosters are.
