Title: BeiDou-3 MEO1&MEO2 - CZ-3B/YZ-1 - XSLC - November 5, 2017 (11:45 UTC)
Post by: beidou on 06/02/2016 09:56 pm
According to various Chinese media reports, China is going to launch as many as 18 BeiDou-3 satellites by the end of 2018 to achieve IOC. Launch of BeiDou-3 satellites will resume starting 2017, we can anticipate a very ambiguous launch plan for the following two years.

Please pardon my confusion.

From Gunter's, it appears that the Beidou-3M -series satellites can be launched ONE AT A TIME by the CZ-03*C*/YZ-1; if they are launched in PAIRS, they are to be launched on a CZ-03*B*/YZ-1.

Am I misunderstanding Gunter, is Gunter misunderstanding the Chinese, or do "we" not understand anything about this particular launch?!?!

Yes it appears CZ-3 launcher family has been grounded so all launches this year should now be marked as TBD.

LC3 is still configured for CZ-2C with its adapter still on the pedestal from the stacking test at least since the last time the service gantries were partially opened a couple of months ago.

The date is from 9ifly where people are quoting local tour operators at Xichang that there will be a launch on that day, and this one is the most obvious candidate.

Of course, this launch could have slipped since then, or that it's for another payload (if so, no one really have any idea of which one!  :-X).....

China to launch more BeiDou-3 satellites in 2017 (http://news.xinhuanet.com/english/2017-09/18/c_136618797.htm)

Quote
BEIJING, Sept. 18 (Xinhua) -- More BeiDou-3 satellites will be launched in November 2017, according to a senior designer of the satellite navigation system.

By the end of this year, two more groups of BeiDou-3 satellites will be sent into space, said Ran Chengqi of state-owned Beidou Navigation Satellite System on Monday at a high-tech forum.

The satellite navigation system will provide services for Belt and Road countries around 2018, and form a complete global satellite navigation system by 2020, said Ran. BeiDou-3's position accuracy is less than five meters, he said.

Currently, the system is able to provide open services to the Asia-Pacific region. China is the third country to develop a satellite navigation system after the United States and Russia.

It looks like they don't have a good enough signal to keep continuous coverage anyway so just forget about the link. :-\

T-0 is apparently at 11:34 UTC.

<Slightly OT background info> About this Kris Wu guy - he's a Chinese actor who was a former member of one of the most famous K-POP groups (and probably one of the very few Chinese who made to the forefront of Korean pop). He's currently in Xichang for a charity event (Xichang is one of China's poorest places and IIRC many are living below the $1 US poverty line).

I'm confused by the nomenclature here. Beidou-3 M1-S and M2-S were launched in Jul 2015. Now these are Beidou-3 M1 and M2?  What was the significance of the -S on the previous Beidou-3 launches (and do we have a Chinese source for the M1 and M2 designations?)

(1) Some earlier sources indicates that -S stands for shiyan (Experimental in Chinese)
(2) Haven't seen an official name for these two yet - in fact I wish the Chinese can stick with a consistent naming conventions for their BDS satellites! I mean, you have GPS SVN XX, GLONASS-M #7XX and Galileo GSAT0XXX, but for BeiDou the only "reliable" way to call the individual satellites is by calling them the "nth satellite".  ???

Also a small rant - apparently the only one-stop place I have seen of getting the status and almanac of the BeiDou satellites is from.....the official GLONASS website (https://www.glonass-iac.ru/en/BEIDOU/)! I am also waiting for public BeiDou status messages to appear (I mean, I'm about to get a new smart phone tomorrow that can use all "Big 4" navsat constellations, yet it's harder to get info on 1 of these 4).  :-\
