You sure that it will follow the YG series?  ;) The trajectory seems weird (too much SSE to be for a 63 degree orbit), except that there's one similar launch - SJ-16 back in 2013 flew to a 75 degree orbit and the path more or less agrees with that.

So a CZ-4B then eh?

Also the original post was from here:

Could that be a sign of a launch from Jiuquan on June 29 from 0310 UTC?

So could it be an SJ-16#2 launched by CZ-4B in a circular ~600 km orbit inclined 75°?

Seems like this is exactly what it is and it has been placed in orbit! I'm waiting for the official news to come out...

...and finally the official news is out. It's indeed SJ-16 #02 and liftoff occurred at 03:21 UTC.

2 objects have already been cataloged by USSTRATCOM

2016-043A/41634 in 595 x 616 km x 75.0° (presumably SJ-16#2)
2016-043B/41635 in 338 x 594 km x 74.98°

So, what is our current thinking about what makes them call something Yaogan and something else Shi Jian?
Shi Jian includes technology development but also includes military series like SJ-16 and SJ-11... is it an issue
of parent organization/management and if so what are the details?

The Chinese are trying to confuse us to death - like the Russians have tried in the past! ;)

I am trying to sort out the interplay - if there is one - between the Shijian, Shiyan Weixing and Yaogan Weixing programmes at present.

Just been playing with some numbers for this launch.

SJ-16-1 was launched into a 601-616 km orbit while SJ-16-2 was initially 596-616 km.

On December 16, 2016 the orbit of SJ-16-2 was raised to 606-617 km and again on December 18 to 608-617 km.  SJ-16-1 atthat time was in a 598-627 km orbit with essentially the same orbital period.  The orbital planes are about 90 degrees apart and the satellites are crossing the equator at pretty-much the same time.

Thank you Igor.   It was not until after the posting that I noticed that the first Shijian-16 had also been manoeuvring.   Still doing the analysis.

These are three graphs, showing the evolution of the orbital periods and orbital altitudes of the two Shijian-16 satellites, plus a graph showing the phasing between the satellites around their orbits.   My versions of Igor's graph!
