Title: Will Russia sanctions impact Progress/Soyuz MS or Angara?
Post by: bulkmail on 08/28/2015 08:19 am
In the 21st century industrial sectors of all countries are intermingled trough trade. There is hardly a sophisticated product that's entirely made inside a single state. For example there are some signs that the newest Russian tank includes vital French parts: http://cbbss.org/?p=5544

AFAIK the current sanctions don't impact Progress/Soyuz MS or Angara, but it seems the situation isn't cooling off, so if sanctions are extended to dual-use or general aerospace equipment/services/IP - what impact would that have on these vehicles? What (if any) non-Russian content does Roscosmos use?

none because they are necessary for ISS operations

I understand those are not CURRENTLY subject to sanctions and that Soyuz/Progress (but not Angara?) are necessary for ISS. My question is not if those are impacted NOW, but what impact a POTENTIAL FUTURE broadest possible sanctions (full restriction of any trade/relations) would have - is there any non-Russian content in Soyuz, Progress, Angara?

As far as I remember, one of major goals for  MS upgrade for Soyuz/Progress was getting rid of foreign components. And Angara is supposedly all-Russian too.

Our rockets and spacecrafts has used a considerable number of Ukrainian components, but the process of getting rid of it was started a long time ago. For example, one of the reasons for the Soyuz-2 rocket was the replacement of the control system produced in the Ukraine for domestic produced one, same for Kurs-NA docking and rendezvous system. I do not know examples of Western-made components in our manned spaceflight program.

Some Russian officials have indicated that their aerospace industry is heavily reliant upon Western electronics, with comments like 75% of the electronic components come from the West.
