Title: LIVE: Progress M-28M Launch and Docking Coverage
Post by: Galactic Penguin SST on 06/04/2015 03:09 pm
According to http://tass.ru/kosmos/2020295 the next Progress flight is now scheduled to launch from pad 1/5 at Baikonur on July 3 at 04:52 UTC.

I knew that the Russians always kept two Progress spacecraft at Baikonur at the same time for occasions like what is going on right now, so does anyone know when was it delivered?

Another question: the Russians have added a 5th Progress flight in 2015 by moving up Progress M-29M (s/n 429, the last of the original Progress M-M series) all the way from April next year to this September. How do they do this (was this one planned to be ready much earlier due to it being the back-up to the new Progress-MS series?)?

They are lucky they still have a few U launchers left to use for the Progress program after the recent mishap with Soyuz 2 & the issues didn't occur after U stocks had been depleted.

You call it lucky, I call it having built in margin. They didn't switched straight away, but kept a very slow transition. And it has paid them. In any case, can't they keep churning FGs or are those also out of production? 2.1a cost something like 30% more, if I'm not mistaken.

Is the FG version suitable for integration with Progress.

Is the FG version suitable for integration with Progress

The first three Soyuz-FG rockets were launched with Progress cargo spacecrafts - Soyuz-FG version is the same as Soyuz-U version in terms of integration with Progress.

Thanks. That might be an alternative route to go with the Progress for now then when the U supply is exhausted.

If I read correctly on the Russian forums, the decision to fly this one on a 2-day rendezvous profile is purely due to previous ISS debris avoidance burns that moved it out of the window to fly it on the 6-hour profile. Is that correct?

I just came here to ask about the omission of a six hour rendezvous, so if anyone can confirm, that would be helpful for my article :)

It has become impossible for Progress M-28M to rendezvous with ISS with an using of four-orbit profile without a changing a launch date due to ballistic reasons because ISS could not provide a necessary phase angle between ISS and Progress M-28M at the launch.

So was the processing flow too late to move the date around by 1-2 days? (back in May they tried to schedule it for launch on June 30 but the phase angle was too large)

Good article, Chris.

The article mentions HTV, but I don't remember reading about any planned changes in HTV cargo as a result of SPX-7.  Did they not talk about this or did I just miss it?  And apologies if you'd like this question elsewhere.  I wasn't sure where to put it (article thread, failure thread, HTV thread).

Looks as if Progress has a bit of a axial roll and perhaps a bit of yaw with space and earth going very slowly transitioning. Nothing that can't be overcome with a bit of RCS. Congrats on a successful launch to Roscosmos and the guys at Baikonur.

I'm sure the slow roll/pitch motion was a planned maneuver into attitude for the first orbit shaping burn.  Looked quite nominal, nothing hurried.

Progress M-28M logistics spacecraft launched to ISS
July 3, 2015

Launch Vehicle (LV) Soyuz-U carrying logistics spacecraft Progress M-28M was launched from Area 1 of the Baikonur launch site on July 3 at 07:55:48 Moscow Time .

The logistics spacecraft Progress M-28M entered a low Earth orbit with the perigee altitude h=193 km, apogee latitude H=245 km, orbital period T=88.59 min and inclination 51.66 degrees. The orbital parameters meet the target values. The spacecraft separated from the third stage of the launch vehicle normally.

In accordance with the program of the International Space Station (ISS) the spacecraft will deliver to it propellant components, compressed oxygen, additional equipment needed to maintain the station in good working order, equipment for science experiments, medical supplies, personal belongings and food for the crew. Altogether, 2.4 metric tons of cargo will be delivered.

The cargo spacecraft will use a two-day flight profile to rendezvous with the ISS. During free flight there are plans to perform two burns with the spacecraft propulsion system to establish a phasing orbit. According to the calculations done by the trajectory specialists, the docking of the logistics vehicle with the Pirs docking compartment (DC) of the ISS is to be automatically performed at 10:13:02 Moscow Time during the 34th orbit. Members of the crew of Expedition 44 to the ISS, Roscosmos cosmonauts Gennadi Padalka and Mikhail Kornienko will be monitoring the docking process from onboard the space station.

The logistics spacecraft of the new series Progress M-M developed and built by RSC Energia is an upgraded version of the Progress M spacecraft. It is equipped with new devices for the motion control and navigation system and an improved onboard measurement system. All the devices are built around state-of-the-art electronic components and run the latest software. The upgrade made it possible to reduce the mass of the onboard equipment and thus enhance the capability to deliver payload to orbit.

The spacecraft is designed to deliver to the International Space Station (ISS) dry cargo, propellant components, supplies of water and gas, to perform dynamic operations when attached to the space station using its own engines, as well as to evacuate waste and spent equipment from the station. Additional tasks of the spacecraft include conducting space experiments in free flight and flight developmental testing of onboard systems and their elements.

ROSCOSMOS: successful docking - "progress" in the ISS

 05/07/2015 10:11

Today, July 5, 2015, at 10:11 MSK logistics vehicle (THC) "Progress M-28M" docked with the Pirs docking compartment of the Russian segment of the ISS.

Automatic docking operations were conducted under the supervision of the ISS commander Gennady Padalka, flight engineer Mikhail Kornienko and experts Mission Control Center FSUE TsNIIMash.

Search ISS, closer to the station and docking systems have been using the RATE-A created Precision Instruments Research Institute (part of the "Russian Space Systems").

Radio system of mutual measurements (SVR) to search, rendezvous and docking of spacecraft "Kurs-A" used to determine the relative motion parameters and automatic docking TGK "Progress M-28M" to the ISS.  The system measures the mutual distance, radial and angular speed, bearing angles, orientation and tilt.  High-precision multi-parameter data make it possible to determine the vector of mutual status spacecraft and implement automatic docking.

TGK "Progress M-28M" delivered to the ISS in 2381 kg of cargo, including oxygen, fuel, equipment for scientific experiments and supplies equipment and containers with food and water, parcels for the crew.

So apparently this poor Progress has undocked from the ISS at 07:35 UTC without anyone noticing, including me due to busy work (did NASA TV have coverage at all?). ::)

I now demand that the unfavorable bias on Progress undockings against that of other visiting ships be fixed in the future!  >:(

NASA posted this picture of the Progress undocking.
Together with the RT video, we have at least something for our files.
