VAB shot and 39B with its lights on.
-
Looks like they've turned the floodlights on for the VAB. That's a good sign.
-
It's like that every day

It appears that several KSC servers are down. Can't get to the video feeds and other sites including webmail

T-storms heading for the spaceport
-
-
Chance of T-storms is listed at 30 percent but that radar image looks a little ominous.
Haven't heard anything about a delay yet...
-
The NASA logo on the side of the VAB and the FSS/RSS are usually brightly illuminated when a major activity is suppose to take place at night... ;)
Just felt like sounding obnoxiously presumptious

How's the weather looking for tonight?
-
Not good
https://www.patrick.af.mil/45og/45ws/forecast/24HrFcst.pdf
-
Looks like it will be better at midnight EDT. But I guess we'll just have to wait to see how the weather behaves when roll time comes.
-
How long can they delay rollout without delaying the launch?
-
I see, as I found out it was not shown at all this morning.
What about tuesday morning or afternoon, will the weather be good by then?
-
shuttlefan - 31/7/2006 9:43 AM
How long can they delay rollout without delaying the launch?
Rollout was originally scheduled for August 2...again courtesy of Spaceflightnow.com. If Atlantis is able to roll out tonight, the P3/P4 Truss will be installed inside the cargo bay on 8/2 (according to the NASA JSC site)
-
Punkboi, we know this on this site already, might as well quote from here than somewhere else.
-
Has the PAO given any firm updates as to the rollout time?
-
astrobrian - 31/7/2006 11:25 PM
Has the PAO given any firm updates as to the rollout time?
Nope. I'm asking people at KSC to see if they know.
-
Still depends on the weather, anyway. As Dave wrote earlier, we'll have to wait and see.
-
i was told 10pm tonight from a person i know in the KSC newsroom

That's just a NET time which has been known about ever since they scrubbed the first rollout attempt.
It all comes down to the weather as they can't roll if the probability of lightnings and precipitation is too high during the 8 hour rollout.
-
looks like storms popping to the west of the space center
-
Here's a thunderstorm forecast for the STS-115 rollout. Best is 10% at 0200 EDT-1100 EDT.
So I would guess that they maybe would delay to NET 0200 EDT.
-
massive storms are hitting here
-
Maybe they will be out of the way in time if they are starting now already... ;)
-
Jim - 1/8/2006 1:11 AM

Pretty much says it all for the attempt that was NET 2 hours time.
-
-
FLA Today reports that rollout have been scrubbed. Next attempt will be 2 am Wednesday.

Rollout now Wednesday morning.
-
While it's far too early to tell exactly where it's heading or how strong it's going to be by then, Tropical Storm Chris looks set to hit Florida early next week...
Let's just hope that it doesn't develop into a big enough storm to require rollback...
[Edit for spelling]
-
Guess what?
According to NASA history, Atlantis is the lucky orbiter to be rolled back twice due to hurricanes, both in 1996 (STS-79). Endeavour has been rolled back once due to Hurricane Erin and Columbia once due to a tropical storm.
-
Just curious--Why, for example, couldn't they start rolling out now? Does it have to do with the workforce and shiftwork, etc? Just wondering why they delay 24 hours and not just wait on the weather...
-
Because the weather is always bad in the afternoon and as you state, shiftwork. Rollout workers are now on 3rd shift.
-
So any news on when Atlantis will be moved? If she does get started to move to the pad tomorrow, what time will that be?
-
2:00 AM EDT

I live in California, so it'll only be 11 PM here when Atlantis hopefully rolls out ;)
-
Remember that NASA TV has NO live coverage of the roll-out, only the last part, when Atlantis is close to the launch pad, will be live on NASA TV !!!
-
Let's hope we can do this by the end of the week. If Atlantis isn't hard down on 39B by Monday, the launch schedule will be affected.
-
With 2 AM EDT being the start time, what is the expected arrival time at the pad? [provided no more storms]

All depends on how fast they go. They vary the speed between 0.5 and 0.9mph, but normally roll at about 0.9, and have on occassion had to stop for a time (you know, clear the stray alligator out the way, deal with technical issues).
It usually takes 5 or 6 hours for the stack to roll out to the pad. That would put us between 7 and 8 am eastern time.

They've been taking about 8 hours out to Pad B...
-
Well, currently the weather seems to be cooperating for a roll in less than 7 hours.
-
That's good to know. Hopefully it will stay that way.
-
Looking good for a 2am start.
-
Lets just keep hoping that tropical storm stays away too. It would be a shame to get Atlantis out there only to have to roll back in a few days

Being new to KSC, I was just wondering where is a good place to watch rollout. Anyone have any suggestions?

Press center car lot is a good place I think.

weather looks good

Trend on all the computer guidance is even farther south than the official track which would take it south of the Keys so no real concern...

Take into account the odd bearing cooling and greasing periods.. 8hrs sounds right, with ref to the last roll out

I wonder why the pad floodlights haven't been activated yet: http://science.ksc.nasa.gov/shuttle/countdown/video/chan3large.jpg
-
By the time they get up the incline, the sun will overwhelm those, anyway.
-
And I'm wondering why we aren't getting coverage on NASA-TV as promised.
-
I think they will wait until the stack is close to the pad, since they said they will only cover the last part of roll out..

NASA TV is on now....perhaps they were waiting for some light, too...

In other news, Chris continues to loom and may reach Hurricane status. The 120-hour forecast currently estimates 70 kt winds, centred off the southern tip of Florida though possibly veering further north. On the other hand the discussion also points out that
CHRIS IS A SMALL TROPICAL CYCLONE...WHICH MEANS IT
CAN SPIN UP QUICKLY BUT ALSO SPIN DOWN JUST AS QUICKLY...

The Crawler has stopped so this marks the arrival the pad. My estimate in hours and minutes is at 12:05 UTC(8:05 am EDT). This leads to a duration of 7 hours and 0 minutes.

Coverage has stopped on the media channel now as well.

The spread of model forecasts still points to better bets of a southern track vs northern though...

RELEASE: 06-287
NASA'S SPACE SHUTTLE ATLANTIS MOVES TO LAUNCH PAD
The Space Shuttle Atlantis arrived at its launch pad at NASA's Kennedy
Space Center, Fla., at 8:54 a.m. EDT Wednesday on top of a giant
vehicle known as the crawler transporter.
After two days of weather delays, the crawler transporter began
carrying Atlantis out of Kennedy's Vehicle Assembly Building at 1:05
a.m. Wednesday. The crawler's maximum speed during the 4.2-mile
journey reached 1 mph.
While at the pad, the shuttle will undergo final testing, payload
installation and a "hot fire" test of auxiliary power units to ensure
proper function. When testing is completed, the rotating service
structure will be moved around the vehicle to protect it from the
elements.
The launch window for the Atlantis mission to the International Space
Station opens on Sunday, Aug. 27. The mission, designated STS-115,
will be the first to perform a major expansion of the station since
December 2002.

looks as great as your last photo !

Anyone know how long it takes to get the plumbing for water, LOX, and LH2 connected up, and how it's done (extra pipes needed, prepping the cryo pipe insulation and testing)?
-
Are there any photos coming to Launch Photography of this? IMO the photos there are cool, as it has amazing detailed photos and close ups of the orbiters. :)
From the rollback of Discovery prior to STS-114, there are hundreds of cables to hook up.
-
I am in California enjoying a vacation, so I missed rollout this time. I'll be back before launch though. Call me Ben by the way, it's just my personal site.

Lovely image sent from a USA guy...

That image is already on the KSC website's gallery page, Chris. Just letting you know. :)

You think he would mind the mission logo added for a background? It's is a gorgeous image.
