This is well known on Antares launches - on every launch so far, it is still asked. it is for TEL avoidance.
Dr Antiono Elias commented on it somewhere on this forum.

Actually, it is US Customary Units. There is a difference.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Customary_Units (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/US_Customary_Units)

I don't know why American aerospace companies mix the two systems. Everything in engineering and science is easier to calculate in metric, especially if you use MKS units.

I seem to recall, years ago, hearing an explanation about this.

Basically US aerospace got its start long before metric started making inroads into the US. All their infrastructure, tooling, etc is non metric. Their has been some switch over, but to do a complete switch over would almost require them to rebuild from the ground up...expensive and time consuming. They, of course, have chosen to do the absolute minimum they can get away with.

Personally, I wish they would just bite the bullit and do a complete switch over.

Not much new. Only things I think the forum would be interested in:

-Gerstenmaier's remarks that supply situation was starting to become vulnerable and he was very relieved by today's launch. Similarly, okay with end of ATV, still negotiating future HTV.

-Culbertson praises international cooperation on ISS and Orbital Antares/Cygnus partners

-Next Orbital mission flies same Cygnus but new upper stage, adds ~500kg. capacity. Following mission (ORB-4) debuts Enhanced Cygnus

-Orbital still negotiating Antares first stage propulsion future

I noticed it too and it startled me, but then presumed it was a brief ascent nav hiccup. Or was it a normal 'iower avoidance; tilt?

Looked to me similar to CRS-1 avoidance maneuver.

Edit: Ed Kyle below is correct, Antonio called it the "Baumgartner maneuver"

This is a purposeful maneuver meant to increase distance from the erector.  It has been used on all four Antares liftoffs, and discussed here every time.  I recall that Antonio even gave it an informal name.

He actually said one or more commercial crew providers would be selected for CCtCap.

He also said that CRS-2 would be awarded in December or January. That seems unlikely given that the proposals are due in November.

That switch of the units has happened between stages burns. First stage performance was reported in US Customary units while second stage flight in metric. Could the reason for it be the fact that first stage is monitored by range and other US ground and naval services/organisations while 2nd stage performance is more related to station and i don't know international partners or something?
This was really funny.

I got some pictures of the event. I knew any I tried to take of the launch its self would look pretty pale compared to all the official shots, so I took some around the Visitors Center of the crowd, hopefully they're ok to post here.
All these shots are from before the launch except the second to last shot which is of the launch (the rocket looks small because it's a wide angle shot) and the last which you can see the smoke from the brush fire at the pad shortly after.

One of the press conference questions was about the liftoff angle - Mr. Culbertson referred to it as the Baumgartner Maneuver

I made a GIF of all my launch photos. Taken from Arbuckle Neck Rd, Assawoman, VA (that's what it's called, autoincorrect!). Great spot (about a mile and a half away, FAR closer than the visitors center), crappy photographer. ;)

But yeah, no tripod, no fancy lens, and I wasn't looking in the camera at all (was looking with my own eyes or with binoculars). Very bright flame even in daylight. Loud, snappy rumble of kerolox propulsion. My first launch.

Disappeared into the clouds and made a few appearances through gaps. Fantastic experience, far brighter than I was expecting.

Added a few originals after the GIF, plus a view of the crowd leaving Arbuckle and the (apparent) LOx venting afterward.

The "Baumgartner Manoeuvre" was described by Frank Culbertson at the presser, as something necessary to protect GSE (cables specifically) from the exhaust. (23:25 onwards in the NASA YT video).

I love the NASA camera frames for Wallops launches... with the tide in the background, but I noticed something today. Isn't that lightning tower quad redundant? The water tank next to the pad is so much higher, and pretty damn close to the pad.

The streaming ISS feed shows the Cygnus track as it runs down ISS with an offset that is slowly converging with the ISS ground track.  This is the first time I can remember this effect being depicted for any visiting vehicle.   Is this always the case or is there something unique about this approach?

A Virginia buddy of mine mailed me a paper copy of what appears to be the local paper, the Chincoteague Beacon. Here's the online article (warning - autoplay video):
http://www.delmarvanow.com/story/news/local/virginia/2014/07/13/antares-wallops-launch/12596683/ (http://www.delmarvanow.com/story/news/local/virginia/2014/07/13/antares-wallops-launch/12596683/)

It was great to see the local take on the launch. But what got me to leave lurker mode and post here was the paper copy front-page photo. It appears the McGregor Cattle aren't alone - there are Atlantic/Wallops Cattle. (Scroll down to the last photo at the above link to see the front-page photo).

It was great to see the local take on the launch. But what got me to leave lurker mode and post here was the paper copy front-page photo. It appears the McGregor Cattle aren't alone - there are Atlantic/Wallops Cattle. (Scroll down to the last photo at the above link to see the front-page photo).
Now someone will have to get the Chicoteague Ponies in a launch photo!  The problem is that the general public probably can't go out to the island during a launch.

Assateague and the beaches aren't generally closed. IIRC, they were only closed recently for LADEE (Minotaur V), and they close at sunset. The horses are wild, skittish, and are not the easiest to photograph... I spent a day in the park with my camera, got a lot of birds, but never saw hide nor hair of the horses. Someone local who has spent more time in the park and knows where they like to eat at what times of day would have better luck, of course...

Departure of U.S. Cargo Ship to Air on NASA Television

After delivering almost three tons of supplies and scientific experiments to the crew of the International Space Station, Orbital Sciences Corporation's Cygnus cargo spacecraft, the SS Janice Voss, is scheduled to leave the station Friday, Aug. 15. NASA Television will provide live coverage of departure activities beginning at 6:15 a.m. EDT.

Ground controllers in the Mission Control Center at NASA's Johnson Space Center in Houston will detach Cygnus from the Earth-facing port of the Harmony module and maneuver it into release position. With the assistance of NASA Flight Engineer Reid Wiseman, Expedition 40 Flight Engineer Alexander Gerst of the European Space Agency then will use the station's Canadarm2 robotic arm, operated from the station’s cupola robotics workstation, to release Cygnus.

Once the spacecraft is a safe distance from the station, its engines will fire twice Sunday, Aug. 17, pushing it into Earth's atmosphere where it will burn up over the Pacific Ocean. Station crew members may have an opportunity to photograph Cygnus' fiery reentry back to Earth in order to gather engineering data that could be applied to the entry path of the European Space Agency's Automated Transfer Vehicle cargo ship in January 2015. The deorbit burn and reentry of Cygnus will not be broadcast on NASA TV.

Cygnus was launched on an Orbital Sciences Antares rocket from NASA's Wallop's Flight Facility in Virginia July 12 on the company's second commercial resupply mission to the station, arriving at the orbiting laboratory July 16.

Anyone know the current rate of seperation between ISS and ORB-2?
Is this rate of seperation constant, or will it be constant until the de-orbit burn on teh 17th?
Is ORB-2 trailing ISS?

TIA.

ORBITAL COMPLETES THIRD CARGO DELIVERY MISSION

TO INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION FOR NASA

-- Cygnus Cargo Logistics Spacecraft Reenters Earth’s Atmosphere Over Pacific Ocean --

-- Company On Track for October Launch of Third CRS Mission in 2014 --

(Dulles, VA 18 August 2014) – Orbital Sciences Corporation (NYSE: ORB), one of the world’s leading space technology companies, today announced the successful completion of its third cargo delivery mission to the International Space Station in the past 10 months, including the initial demonstration flight completed in October 2013 and the first two operational missions under the company’s $1.9 billion Commercial Resupply Services (CRS) contract with NASA.  The company also noted that it is nearing the launch of its third CRS mission of 2014, which is currently scheduled to take place in mid-October.

The Cygnus™ spacecraft that carried out the cargo delivery mission for the second CRS mission, known as “Orb-2,” unberthed from the ISS on August 15, completing a 31-day stay at the orbiting laboratory.  Yesterday, Cygnus reentered Earth’s atmosphere over the Pacific Ocean east of New Zealand at approximately 9:15 a.m. (EDT) marking the successful conclusion of the Orb-2 mission.

“Orbital’s third cargo delivery mission to the International Space Station concluded with the controlled reentry of Cygnus over the unpopulated expanses of the Pacific Ocean,” said Mr. Frank Culbertson, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Orbital’s Advanced Programs Group.  “From start to finish, we are very pleased with the results of this mission.  Our team is proud to be providing essential supplies to the ISS crew so they can carry out their vital work in space.  With three fully successful cargo delivery missions now complete, it is clear our public-private partnership with NASA is proving to be a positive asset to the productivity of the ISS.  We are looking forward to the next Antares launch and the Cygnus cargo delivery mission that is coming up in about two months.”

The Orb-2 mission began on July 13 when Orbital’s Antares™ rocket launched Cygnus into orbit from the Mid-Atlantic Regional Spaceport (MARS) located at NASA’s Wallops Flight Facility in Eastern Virginia.  Cygnus, which carried 3,669 pounds (1,664 kilograms) of cargo and science payloads, berthed with the ISS three days later on July 16.  Prior to its departure from the station, the astronauts loaded the cargo module with approximately 3,550 pounds (1,615 kilograms) of items for disposal.

Under the CRS contract with NASA, Orbital is using Antares and Cygnus to deliver up to 44,000 pounds (20,000 kilograms) of cargo to the ISS over eight missions through late 2016.  For these missions, NASA will manifest a variety of essential items based on ISS program needs, including food, clothing, crew supplies, spare parts and equipment, and scientific experiments.

Preparations are already well advanced for the next Cygnus cargo delivery flight, the Orb-3 mission, scheduled to take place in October.  The Antares rocket is now undergoing final assembly and testing at Wallops Island, while the Cygnus spacecraft is being prepared for shipment from Orbital’s Dulles, VA production facilities to the Wallops launch site in September.  The Orb-3 flight is expected to deliver its heaviest cargo manifest yet, with 5,050 pounds (2,290 kilograms) of cargo and payloads to be sent to the ISS.
