Any confirmation?

Project Orion? That's interesting. What happened to Constellation?

To the best of my understanding, Constellation remains the over-arching program that encompasses Orion, Ares, etc.

Strange, I would have thought that the name was too strongly attached to the pulsed nuke project. Still I like it.

Only within the space-nerd community; for public consumption, it's pretty good...

When they announced ARES they had the project insignia that went with it. Does anyone have the ORION one?

Orion wasn't officially announced by NASA yet...so the insignia is still probably under wraps

NASA's new moon project gets a logo

Thanks for the Nifty update!!!!!
:)
:)
Now, I just hope it still gets a chance to fly...... :(

The benefit for NASA of coopting both the Ares and Orion names is that this will help obliterate in Google and other search engines any high ranking references to the original Ares and Orion projects, which both embarassed the performance of NASA in their own respective ways. A real MiniTru operation.
-
Another conspiracy? Orion wasn't NASA's and the other Ares isn't a "real" (approved/confirmed) mission
-
Orion was a government proposal that puts NASA throw-weights to shame, Ares was a cheap shuttle replacement HLV proposal from way back that is much cheaper than VSE. I am sure NASA gets a few tons of mail a year asking when it's gonna pull its head out and build either or of these projects.
-
Orion used nukes. This is the other current ARES, Aerial Regional-scale Environmental Survey
-
is there any chance of the orion CEVgrowing to 5.5 meters in diameter any time soon, or is that volume simply not needed and leading to unwarented cost?
-
Jim doesn't seem to think so--but a Stumpy or DSD option would allow for a larger CEV--or even Big Gemini.

Astronaut reveals name of new moonship

(Quote) "Williams let it slip Tuesday that the new vehicle's name is Orion.
"We've been calling it the crew exploration vehicle for several years, but today it has a name... Orion," Williams said, taping a message in advance for the space agency that was transmitted accidentally over space-to-ground radio".

Any date yet on the annoucement? Is it really next week?
-
31 august....

I thought I had heard the orion name a few weeks ago. How is this something new? Or was it just never official til now :)
-
The BBC has an article (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/5277736.stm) on this, aparantly the name Orion was to be kept a secret untill the CEV award on the 31st but the name got out after an astronaut on the ISS was prerecording an announcement that was then acidentaly broadcast.
-
Okay, I give up.
What ever became of "Altair" and "Artemis?" I don't think NASA has announced any usage of those names, have they?
Is Orion JUST the modern-day equivalent of the CSM, or does it cover the lander, too?
Ares I and Ares V are easy-enough to understand.

Orion is for the CEV

When viewed head-on the LM CEV with its round solar arrays is strikingly reminiscent of the three stars in Orion's belt. So one has to wonder which came first, the name or the round solar panels.
Did a LM employee say "Hey! They're going to call it Orion. Quick, put big round solar arrays on it and we're sure to lock up the contract!"?
Or did a NASA official say "Well it's looking like that mouse-eared LM proposal is going to win. Orion would sure be a cool name for it."?

Neither. Skip Hatfield explained the reason for the round solar arrays at the press conference. Naming has nothing to do with design, especially with NASA. It's just a coincidence I would imagine.

I knew I should have said I was just kidding in my first post.
