Title: Persona - what's in a name?
Post by: Phillip Clark on 01/21/2014 11:51 am
I have just noticed on Anatoli Zak's review of the Persona satellite programme (http://www.russianspaceweb.com/persona.html) that he comments that the satellite is also known as Kvarts.

I wonder whether Persona is the equivalent to a Yantar "family" designator and Kvarts relates to the specific satellite type - like Kobalt-M?   This might make sense, especially since there have been references to Persona-1 and a future Persona-2 variant.

Any thoughts, rebuttals please?

As its main imaging instrument, Resurs-P No. 1 sports a Geoton-L1 telescope developed at OAO Krasnogorsky Zavod with an image storing and conversion system dubbed Sangur-1U developed at NPP Opteks, a branch of TsSKB Progress in Samara. Sangur-1U converts optical images into digital signal, and then processes, compresses and transmits this data to the satellite's radio system for downlink to ground stations.

For the 14Ф137 it is a Sangur-1P?

Here is a document claiming that Persona is based on the Resurs-UKP platform, whatever that is.

Confusingly Resurs-UKP is also used by VNIIEM.

In the illustration posted by Danderman, Cosmos 2506 is referred to as "Persona-3".   Maybe I am being pedantic here (or it's just the way that the Russians write sequential numbers), but I see Cosmos 2506 as being the third Persona-1/Kvarts satellite to be launched, with Persona-2 thought to be under development and Persona-3 not previously rumoured.

Not heard of the Resurs-UKP platform before: Persona-1 has always looked to be a more massive beastie than the Yantar-derivatives used for the Resurs-P programme.
