On Aug. 17, 2009, a Delta II launch vehicle carrying a GPS satellite lifted off for the last time; delivering the 48th GPS satellite to orbit. The Delta II, which first launched on Feb. 14, 1989, was developed by the Air Force to launch GPS satellites and has gone on to become and industry workhorse. This video chronicles this important partnership that brought so much to our nation and the world.

You have done an excellent job these past 20 years working with
the Delta II boosters you've assembled and launched.
As for the GPS system? I've only used it once in Olympia, Washington.
But I confess it's a great help in time of need; And a great gift to us
civilians from the US Navy.
My thanks extended to you bluejackets as well. ;)

Navy? GPS is a USAF program
I asked my uncle who served in the US Navy in Satellites and Intelligence and he said that there were originally two navigation projects one USAF and the other USN. The Navy's project ran into some large hurdles in the late 60s into the mid 70s which became a fatal wound for the project when USAF was much farther along and as the result DoD and Congress downselected to one program which the USAF project would serve the entire DoD. Once i get my hands on some material on the Navy's Navigation project and its name I will edit my post to reflect that and I will attach the info as PDFs. I hope to receive it a few days from my uncle once he scans the hard copy he found for me.

IIRC the Navy program was Timation.

LORAN?
LORAN was a terrestrial long range radio navigation system.
IIRC the Navy program was Timation.
TRANSIT was the first operational satellite based navigation system, though with less stringent accuracy requirements than GPS, and with less than continuous satellite coverage. It was developed with the first deployed Polaris boats in mind.
Timation came later, and was an experimental effort as I understand things. It was a time-based system that contributed to GPS development.

Moe Grills never said that GPS was a USN program. He stated that GPS was a great gift to us
civilians from the US Navy.
