How is Proton able to deploy 2 satellites? Is Luch somehow able to support the mass of the Israeli satellite?

For a spacecraft to communicate with Luch, a dedicated steerable Ku band antenna is required; this would be as useful for Phobos-Grunt as a boat anchor.

Probably a problem of telemetry between the 2nd stage and the ground... as all is OK at this time.

Separation of Amos-5 should take place at 2052UTC after the Briz-M 5th burn that will begin at 2050UTC. This burn should last for 47 seconds.

Chris, contrary to your article, the Russian Space Agency launch announcements say Luch-5A is an Express-1000 satellite with a fuelled mass of 1148 kg
(the Khrunichev site said it was only 950 kg). It's a similar design to Amos-5 (which is an Express-1000N) and not the same as the old KAUR-4 based Luch satellites.

Khrunichev reports AMOS deployed to a 35659 x 36005 km x 4.9 deg orbit, and
Luch-5A is reported deployed to the 'target orbit' but no parameters given. Will be interesting to see how long it takes Space-Track to find them.

So does the Russian segment need any new equipment to transmit KU-band for Luch or will it go through the USOS Ku-band antenna?  If the russian side is independent, any chance of sharing data from both sides as was previously done on the USOS for the Russian side?

I remember that (at least for Zvezda) there are unused antennae specifically designed for the Luch system. I might be wrong though.

Amos-5 (which is an Express-1000N)
Jonathan, the name of the platform is given as Express 1000H in English by ISS Reshetnev (so the H does not seem to be Cyrillic for N here  :) )

We need new equipment inside and outside of Russian segment for the using of new Luch satellites and we will use ONA antenna on Zvezda module.

There is absolutely no doubt that it is Ekspress-1000N, since the latin letter H has no equivalent in Cyrillic alphabet.

Any idea why the fairing was rotated vertical?  That's not normally done for the commercial launches.

In the press release, it is written that it was done for the charging of Luch-5A's batteries.

I don't understand the necessity of verticalising the satellite...

From an ISS Reshetnev PDF from 2007, they had this platforms:
Express-1000A: Loutch-5A/B
Express-1000K: Express-MD/AT2
Express-1000H: Amos-5/Telekom-3/Yamal-300K
Express-1000SH: Express-AM8/AT1
Express-2000: Express-AM5/AM6

The PDF is badly exporte, but it seemed like the K and H could put a second satellite on top. The K is the smallest one, the H is next, the SH is lengthened yet, and last the 2000 is the biggest one.
Since the export didn't put some letters, I'm assuming K can be stack upto three on a Proton-M with Briz-M or DM-03 US, the H can take two, and the SH can take a secondary >1200kg satellite, ll with the above stated Proton-M.

Well, three are two different questions, what does Reshetnev call it in English when they write English copy, and what is the Russian name for it.
It would not be unprecedented for the name used by the manufacturer for a satellite in English is not a direct transliteration of the name used by them in the original language.

So Andrey, you are saying that when we see  "Экспресс-1000Н" in a Russian document, the "Н" is an English H and not a Cyrillic N ?. Just trying to super-clarify here! You can see why we might be confused!

Preparatory to the planned launch of more Russian Luch (Altair) communications satellites, Oleg Kononenko used the FSH3 spectrum analyzer to perform another characterization test on the Lira antenna feeder, taking parameter measurements via S-band & VHF. [The Lira system is a two-way communication system between the ISS RS and TsUP Mission Control via the Russian Luch relay satellite system (when it is complete). The RS comm subsystem can receive commands directly from RGS (Russian Ground Station) through the Regul subsystem and can receive commands from the Luch satellite through Lira or Regul. Efforts are underway to rebuild the Luch relay satellite system after many years of funds-related absence. Luch-5A was successfully launched on a Proton on 12/11/2011. Luch-5B & Luch 4 are scheduled for launch this year and 2013. This should provide the RS with 45 minutes of coverage per orbit via Lira and Regul.]

Maybe someone can explain the difference between Lira and Regul.  There is a description of Regul further on in the notes, but its still not clear:

In the SM, FE-4 Kononenko made preparations for tomorrow's scheduled R&R (removal & replacement) of the SA-325-I transmitter unit of the Regul-OS, gathering equipment & tools. [Located in the SM, Regul-OS is a subsystem of the RSUS Radio Control & Comm System of the RS (Russian Segment) for handling two-way voice communication, digital command/program information, and telemetry transmission via Russian RGS (Groundsites). Regul is the nominal uplink channel for all Russian commands; operating at a low data rate, it is equivalent to the US S-band system. The SA-325 block to be removed tomorrow is one of three redundant transmitters, each containing a transceiver (PPA) and Digital Processor (UtsO).]
