Title: NewSpace 2011 Conference to be Streamed LIVE on Spacevidcast.com
Post by: Danderman on 07/25/2011 09:46 pm
Those that can't make the NewSpace 2011 Conference don't have to miss out. Tune into www.Spacevidcast.com to watch the live stream of the conference and send in questions for the panelists via the chat feature. All the panels, lunch events, and even the NewSpace Awards Gala will be streamed on July 28-30. Set your calendar to watch what the leaders of the space industry have to say about expanding our foothold in space and read live commentary on Twitter by searching for the hashtag #NewSpace2011!

The conference starts at 8:00-8:30am and runs until 5:00-6:00pm Pacific Standard Time, and the Gala from 6:00-10:00pm. The full agenda is available online. The conference organizers ask those attending to share the link for the Spacevidcast stream with their friends and colleagues back home, and to post updates on their favorite social media platform.

For more information, visit newspace.spacefrontier.org

end of blurb. I checked out the agenda at:

http://newspace2011.spacefrontier.org/agenda/

and its filled with the people at NASA and the various companies that everyone here either loves or hates. There's a whole session just on SpaceX.    ::)

The conference starts at 8:00-8:30am and runs until 5:00-6:00pm Pacific Standard Time, and the Gala from 6:00-10:00pm.

Those times are off by an hour, it's 8am - 6pm Pacific Daylight Time, which translates to 11am EDT / 15 UTC.

Bob Cabana for some KSC promoting. Max Vozoff is always good.

Are you going to the event Jon?

Interesting talk by ULA on secondary payloads... most interesting to me was the proposed mod of the secondary payload adapter into a solar-electric third stage which would make it possible to inject the secondary payload at almost any kind of orbit (and send many different secondary payloads to different orbits per launch... single-launch nearly-Orbcomm-like constellation as a secondary payload?), including escape.
Started a thread about it here: http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=26232.msg784932#msg784932 (please add any more information if you know any!)

Good talk by Charles Miller, Senior Advisor (sp) for Commercial Space, NASA.
Talked about the background of NACA, why it was founded, the Wright Brothers, etc.

Is the video archived somewhere?

The biggest problem for secondary payloads has always been schedule. The technical stuff is minor.

What do you mean by that? Do you mean that the secondary payload is held up by the primary (and possibly vice versa!)?

NASA Inspector General Paul Martin discusses his recent report on the difficulties facing NASA as they look to commercial companies to get their astronauts to the International Space Station and Low-Earth Orbit.

BTW anyone have a link to Mr. Martin's report?

Yes. Or the primary doesn't want a secondary hanging around its launch. Secondary payloads have gotten jerked around by the owners of primary payloads a lot. It's one of the things that has really wounded the cubesat community--they build something fast and then end up waiting years to get a launch. You can find a lot of info about this if you dig around a bit.

He mentioned a couple of times that they were looking into a satellite-servicing version with a partner (can't remember who at the minute), which I presume would be where the robo-arm would come in?

In addition to the TPS info already posted by Rocket Science, Sirangelo also said it was being developed with Ames and (I think...) that it was a tile system (able to replace many at once?), topped with an ablative layer. Hoped for it to be multi-use.

Can't wait to see the drop tests and finished vehicle  :)

He said that they could add an airlock with manipulator arms. So I imagine that it would be some kind of external module.

He also said that they were working with MacDonald Dettwiler (MDA) to allow Dream Chaser to be able to service satellites. MDA is the Canadian company that makes the Canadarm.

Yes,  but, I have heard this misspeak repeated a number of times on this website and many other websites and it does not do any favors to the people who did the research and development on lifting body technologies. They truly deserve their time in the spotlight once Dreamchaser is up and operational.

Mark,
We’ve been over this before… You are a bit “too rigid” in what a lifting body is. Even an Apollo type capsule uses lifting entry with CG to affect its stability and crossrange.  The HL-020/Dream Chaser is a winged lifting body with elevons on the highly dihedral wings with an aerofoil cross section.  The closest of the “pure” lifting body is the half-cone M2-F1. If Dale Reed believed that the Shuttle was a derivative of his lifting body research that’s good enough for me.

Robert

During Sierangelo's speech, there was a video that was shown that was a tribute to the people that worked on the HL-20 and Sierangelo also spoke of one engineer that worked on the BOR-4 that he spoke to when visiting Russia to learn more about the BOR-4. He mentionned the fact that they would carry the name of that engineer on the Dream Chaser per his request prior to dying (which he transmitted through his daughter after his death).

Sierangelo also mentionned that when the Australian spy plane took pictures of the BOR-4 at sea, the Russians were taking pictures of the spy plane at the same time. :)

People tend to forget that the Russian BOR-4 got its ideas from the USAF X-23 Prime including NASA and should stop kissing up to the Russians on their own site. I know they need the rides… but please already!

An upper stage would rendezvous with the ISS, then get grabbed by the sticky boom and brought toward the ISS. Then nanosats would then be brought inside the ISS via the JEM airlock? Or would there be some sort of nanosat launcher attached to the sticky boom?

I think that both those pics are in the Energia book by Hendrickx. But the Aussies clearly got the better part of the deal, because they were simply flying a common boring P-3 Orion.

Lots of talk about composite LOX/RP-1 USAF joint NASA Liquid Flyback Booster... Pushing reusability in the >90% range.

Sirangelo: Maybe months on orbit
Docked to the station or free-flying? Manned or unmanned?

He also said that they were working with MacDonald Dettwiler (MDA) to allow Dream Chaser to be able to service satellites. MDA is the Canadian company that makes the Canadarm.
But they are working on a next gen unit...that telescopes out.
Like the Strela cranes?

“SLS  must die”
-Orion  ended
-COTS, CCDev end it as it is
-Outsourcing to the Russians insane
-Goal of the United States should be permanent settlement
-New Space is an industry doing something with a purpose; it is the engine that will power the movement
-Reinvigorate the Space Settlement Act

Yet more realistic, down-to-Earth "insight" from Tumlinson. ::)

I seems that he thinks NASA people just get in the way.

The COTS/CCEV reference is because some people believe that there are better ways for NASA to buy goods and services from the private sector than those two approaches.

To answer the questions about NS11 archives, all sessions should have been recorded. I'm waiting on them to come back to Minneapolis this weekend where I'll upload them in full to YouTube. No Spacevidcast epic subscription will be required, they will be free and clear for all to watch.

However, due to our move to LA some stuff may get delayed. We're working on it though and hope that we can get all of it online very soon. Typically we try and upload in real-time, but we actually didn't have official SVC staff on-site for this one so I have to two step the whole process.

Thanks for the notice. Some of us are looking forward to viewing some sessions again.

Of course. I wish we didn't have this delay, but the media is literally being driven back to Minneapolis and I can't touch it until it gets here. I want to watch it too!

That's cool. I'll be lifting some DC quotes out of that archive (yes, I'm obsessed with DC), but I'll heavily link/hat tip SVC for making the recording available in the article. Should work out to be a good decision to publish on the open site as the more people on site, the more chance there's going to be new Epic sign ups.

Servers aren't cheap. Plus we have to get you over a million for that mixer desk you were banging on about in last weeks show ;D (I like lots of buttons and flashy things, plus levers which blow up rebel planets).

Ah ha ha ha, I would *LOVE* that switcher. A GVG Kayenne (http://video.grassvalley.com/video/kayenne/) production truck that travels the country and brings live HD video of space events to peeps in real time from anywhere on or off the planet. That's the dream, bro. That's the dream!

I am uploading the sessions now. It sounds like 2 of the sessions were not recorded for whatever reason but I don't know which 2.

There's one huge caveat: I have not had time to enter *any* meta data for these items. That means they are untitled, have no tags and have no description. I uploaded them in this way because if I waited until I had a chance to enter meta data it would be another 2 to 3 weeks before I would be able to get them online (would have to wait until our bandwidth is installed in LA and systems set back up).

I will go back and enter titles and whatnot during my free time. Until then, allow around 24 hours for all of the uploads to complete. Each should start popping up as they finish uploading and you should start to see one or two within an hour. You can find the videos on youtube.com/Spacevidcast (http://www.youtube.com/spacevidcast) and I'll add them to Spacevidcast proper (http://www.spacevidcast.com) when I have some free time.

Nothing has been reviewed, so it is possible some garbage clips were uploaded too. If so, I'll delete them when I have a chance. Regardless, now you'll have access to the archives, however messy they may be, without having to wait.

Thanks,

B

Is there any way you could crowd-source these tasks?
