Title: Insat vs. Gsat

Insat vs. GSat

i am try ing to find some system in the designation of the indian geostationary satellite.

Initially it appeared, that the designation "Insat" was used for operational satellites, while experimental satellites were called "GSat"

Now it appears, that the Insat desinator is not used anymore - except for the long delayed Insat-3D and an backup called Insat-3DR.

Has there anone some insight in this naming convention?

the GSAT series was the name given to satellites launched/to be launched by GSLV rocket.

GSLV-D1 GSAT-1
GSLV-D2 GSAT-2.etc...

ISRO expected GSLV to be operational and fully ready to launch satellites and that it need not depend on ariane...but this has not taken place.

All G-SAT satellites EXCEPT experimental ones have INSAT series names too..LIKE
INSAT-4G GSAT-8
INSAT-4F GSAT-7
INSAT-4D GSAT-5
INSAT-$E GSAT-6

GSATs with NO INSAT names...example...
GSAT-5P

That's what i have thought too, but this does not really fit: Insat-4C and 4CR were always planned to be launched on GSLV, but never received a GSAT designation.

And satellites beyond GSAT-8 apparently do not have an Insat designation.

My guess is that GSAT is the name given to the satellites that India built with single telecommunications payload. Earlier INSAT payload played the dual role of telecommunication and meteorological satellites. Kalpana-1 is the first sole-meteorological satellite. The dual designation may have been maintained to enable transition of programme managements. The GSATs are under the GEOSAT programme instituted in 1999-2000.

Does also not fit: Insat-4A, 4B, 4C, 4CR were communications only satellites, but did not have the GSAT designation

The dual designation may have been maintained to enable transition of programme managements. The GSATs are under the GEOSAT programme instituted in 1999-2000.

That sounds plausible and might be the reason for the two designators
