Depends if they need it. A decision on FD9 docked inspection of the Port Wing with the SRMS EE and any impacts to the timeline might be relevant. DAT were still working on what they have last I heard.

"I don't think we can do that or Mr Navias might be very angry."

"Are you sure, Tony has a great face for radio" heh.

Tony is now allowed to miss the PAO event.

Seems this PAO event is getting into the way. They need to deconflict the EVA tag up with the event.

They also want Tony back for the PAO event.

"But he can stand at the back so they can't see much of him" (poor guy heh!)

"He just wants to hold the camera" is the response.

Marcia Dunn up first.

Peirs: We're hoping to get a look in about an hour.

Sir Isaac got a ride in Cupola.

Tracy hasn't had a chance to look at the oil slick. Other members have and report it's a bit heartbeaking.

Taking a break and recharing batteries. Some slept in this morning, they are very tired. Enjoying views out of Cupola.

Fox News radio - live and organized :)

"Likely the last flight of Atlantis and how's she holding up" (I like this guy! :))

Tony: Atlantis is holding up great and she's holding up great and she's a beautiful ship. Hoping for another flight but we'll let the program managers decide.

Can any of you see your home towns or the oil slick.

Peirs: We've been working in Cupola. It's just beautiful, like being in IMAX but real life.

Asking about Peirs being British and what he's doing with a piece of Sir Isaac Newton's Apple Tree.

Peirs: RSL asked me to take that up with a picture of Sir Newton. It's floating, not hitting his head.

On Shuttle ending and children's future in space.

Tracy: gives a "if it's in their hearts" politically correct answer.

CBS News - Peter King and Bill Harwood.

Asking Kenn on the Commanders view on how the mission is proceeding.

Kenn: "I started scaring myself on what was invovled with MRM-1 docking. We were elated. EVA-2 was performed flawlessly and got us on time. We were all absolutely thrilled with how this mission has gone."

For Peirs on Robotics.

Peirs: "Tracy and I have been hanging in this glass bubble, you can see everything, the shuttle and station and it's so much easier to see what you're doing and much better than watching it all on TV."

On MRM-1

Tracy: "The Russian crewmates have just looked inside and it sounds like it's full of stuff. A little bit of work to be done before we can go inside. It's a great addition and especially for our Russian segement. We can get some relief for stowage and work experiements."

On EVAs

"The only thing I hope for is to get them back in safe. We're going to finish the last two batteries with some toolbox resupply toolbox. Have some ammonia jumpers to reconnect. We're going to study it up this afternoon.

On launching on a Soyuz and long duration.

Tracy: "It's a bit different than Shuttle. Florida is more fimilar, so the mission starts earlier than the rocket lighting. Very different between the solids and the liquids. Soyuz hangs on its launch pad is interesting, much more yawing and gs involved with Soyuz. I could go on and on, the differences are very unique and curious, but I felt very safe in it."

Event over.

Mike:
Crew is taking a well deserved break. This morning the crew worked with changes to EVA-3. Team working on the Water Dispenser (hot water) problem, potentially a circuit breaker. No new problems on Atlantis. Team recovered PTU yesterday and performed a third checkout after the EVA, full range of motion and the camera is fully functional for late inspection.

Assessing going back to the normal post undocking late inspection, or perform docked survey. Decision either today or later.

MMT decision not to deboost via shuttle. Undock with excessive prop. 70lbs of O2 going to ISS. 40lbs into high pressure tanks. Remainder into the cabin atmosphere.

EVA-3 Ammonia Jumper added. Two batteries. Wrap up work on the P4 worksite with tools. Return ICC to MT FD8 remove FD9 via SSRMS back to PLB. Grapple fixture to be brought inside airlock. Get aheads: MLI on ORU temp platform needs to be put into a proper position. Stow some tools on the outside of the airlock.

Notes Lonnie's 100th mission. First member of the century club. Has worked missions since STS-1.

Mark C on inspections.

Mike: Ascent has been cleared by DAT. MMOD inspection has the team assessing the risk with the PTU, assessing if to do Docked Late Inspection. Risk Trade with DAT and MMT. (So it'd be a full DLI if taken).

EVA length:

Mike: Planned 6.5 hours, do not intend to extend.

Bill H on TPS:

Mike: Decision we got from MMT on FD2 and FD3 and EVA-1 etc. have cleared the vehicle from an ascent standpoint.

On why DLI.

Mike: DLI is because some of the imagery quality is suboptimal, some of the areas we didn't see using the OBSS used alternative assets. There's some small risk with not having a perfect set of imagery. The team is comfortable with what they've seen, no reason to suspect a problem with the heatshield.

Robert P on EMU swap/back up gloves:

Mike: There was a fit problem with Garrett's previous gloves, it was pressing against his hand. Got to be uncomfortable, so he opted to swap to his back up gloves.

Clare M on experiments.

Mike S: Expect to complete the vast majority of them. Cold stowage and then get them to the ground. Checking what items they want to return vs limited stowage on the middeck. May return unrine processing filters etc. Trade off discussion. Will return all the science we launched with.

Todd H on TPS:

Have imagery of all areas on Atlantis. Some did not have the best lighting. RPM got the vast majority and some from EVA-1 during SSRMS transition. During C&C crash they decided to take some photos.

On WLEIDS:

There aren't any indications that would cause us any concern. Most indications could be vibrations, due to how sensitive they are in those locations.

Over.

Watch the video back too, the questions seem to be very good for this mission.

The MSBs and post MMTs are almost always beat reporters, thus they know what they are talking about, and the questions are good as a result. Different league to some of the mass media PAO events (although today's was a good one).

I caught some parts of discussion between someone from Expedition 23 (I guess one guy from russian crew) and Mission Control from Moscow. Crew has seen some metal shavings (dunno if I got it right) in the air in MRM-1 and Moscow wanted to ensure that they were having masks. There will be no more work in MRM-1 today, MCC-M is going to analyze situation during the night.

I guess they were working with hatch at that moment..

From ISS Daily Report for 20/05/2010:

In the RS, the big event today was the opening of and first ingress in the newly arrived MRM-1. Spending most of their work hours on these activities, CDR Kotov & FE-1 Skvortsov:
. Configured STTS intermodule communications between FGB & MRM-1
  for operating in MRM-1.
. Set up internal lighting for MRM-1 ingress.
. Readied the IPD & AK-1M equipment for sampling the air in MRM-1.
. Conducted, on TsUP GO, a one-hour leak check at the FGB GA (Pressurized Adapter) and MRM-1 interface.
. Opened, on TsUP GO, the vestibule hatches between the FGB GA & MRM-1.
. Performed the standard first-ingress sampling of the cabin atmosphere,
looking for CO (Carbon Monoxide) with the IPD-CO Draeger tubes, for
Formaldehyde with the IPD-Formaldehyde analyzer, and for air
constituents with two AK-1M samplers, one before, the other after air
scrubbing (but before IMV (Inter Modular Ventilation) activation).
. Started several hours of air scrubbing.
. Performed final ingress in MRM-1.
. Uninstalled & removed the StM "probe" docking mechanism, after taking documentary
photographs of the StM and downlinking them to the ground.

For monitoring MRM-1 hatch opening effects on the cabin atmosphere, Timothy took GSC (Grab Sample Container) samples (to contrast with the ones taken on 18/05.)

Kornienko retrieved a Simvolika kit from MRM-1 and spent close to 3 hrs on the traditional Russian preparation of commemorative (“symbolic”) items of MRM-1’s addition to the ISS, to be returned in part on Soyuz TMA-17/21S (packages #1-#6) and in part on STS-132 (packages #7-#17). [The Simvolika items consist of 17 packages with several hundred Rassvet pennants, which Mikhail imprinted with the ISS stamp, repacked into rubber-lined bags and stowed in 21S and Atlantis.]

EVA-3 Objectives:
Because of yesterday’s excellent spacewalk performance by Bowen & Good, getting well ahead of their timeline and transferring one more battery than planned, EVA-3 has been replanned to include about 25 minutes of get-aheads:
. Install two remaining batteries (E, F) at the P6 Truss, returning the old
  units (#5, #6) on the ICC-VLD.
. Clean up the P6 truss.
. Install P4/P5 NH3 (ammonia) jumper.
. Retrieve Orbiter PDGF.
. Remove & re-install P1 Truss RGFSB
(Radiator Grapple Fixture Stowage Beam) – deferred from STS-131/19A EVA-2 in April.
. Re-secure MLI cavity flap on EOTP Input Drive at SPDM - get-ahead.
. Stow EVA tools (can be broken up) - get-ahead.

Also pre-empting today's articles (there will be four!)

First is Chris G's EVA-3 outline and the opening part of what has been the focus of the MMT, the WLEIDS indication.

Second will be mine after the EVA explaining the investigation into a LO2 IFR liberation event and the WLE IDS....and how they are clearing the relation between the two, due to the potential of damage (as much as it won't be, otherwise you'd see it, LDRI or not).

Then we've got the Ariane 5 ECA launch later today, and the Delta IV tonight.

Other people are watching the EVA, and somebody has already posted a video on youtube of an earlier sequence discussed here at http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=21689.105
posted at 1059 gmt. The youtube sequence is

My first guess is that it's a 2000 mile wide satellite.

239th US astronaut spacewalk, the 146th in support of ISS - for a total of 514 hours 53 mins. 118th out of ISS airlock - for a total of 727hrs 38 mins.

Title: Re: LIVE: STS-132 Flight Day 7/8 - FD7 MRM-1 Checks, Transfers, Off Duty - FD8 EVA-3
Post by: ArielGold on 05/21/2010 05:23 pm
Total times:

STS-132: 21:20 total EVA time
ISS Assembly: 146 EVAs for 914:53
118th EVA from ISS airlocks for 727:38
Reisman: 3 EVAs - 21:12
Good - 4 EVAs - 29:53
239th US spacewalk

Total ISS Assembly number is definitely 914 hours, 53 minutes, not 514. (Granted, PAO's five sounds like nine, but the MCC SR from EVA 2 states: "Today’s spacewalk was the 145th for station assembly and maintenance. Those spacewalks total 908 hours, 7 minutes." http://www.nasa.gov/mission_pages/shuttle/shuttlemissions/sts132/news/STS-132-11.html)

Agreed, thanks for posting those, Pete.  We've seen some great stills of the vehicle on this mission.  You can really see the effects of 32 ascents and 31 entries in the high resolution photos.  Nice view of the discoloration on the right inboard elevon.  And overall beautiful shots of Atlantis operating in the environment she was designed for.

And thanks again Ron for today's live updates.  Orbital mechanics and scheduling conspired to prevent me from watching this mission's EVAs live.

Emily:

Today was another great day to be involved with the Human Space Flight program. (reviews EVA-3).

Did find some metal shavings inside MRM-1. Installed clamps, and allowed the filters to clean out the shavings. Hoping it'll be cleaned up by morning.

MMT decided no inspections needed, so no need to add to FD9.

Lisa: Happy birthday to her Dad. Couldn't be happier with the crew. Performed flawlessly (also reviews the EVA, extensively, without looking at notes, Lisa knows her EVA's backwards! :)). Really proud of how the guys did.

Kirk: Really proud to be talking about ISS. We've had a great mission and very happy. Shuttle and ISS crew have performed exceptionally well, as have the shuttle and ISS vehicles. It's been a great mission.

Upcoming, 21st Soyuz undocking on June 2. Soyuz 23 launch on the 14th of June, arrives on the 16th, then relocated on the MRM-1 docking port on the 27th. Next due is the progress on the 28th. Russian and US stage EVA in the summer.

September: STS-133 due to bring PMM (currently) and the external pallet. NET 27th of May for Falcon 9.

Questions:

Mark C on Batteries:

Emily, first four are fully charged and in the system. Other two sets should be fully charged by the morning.

Kirk, they were launched in 2000 with a lifetime of seven years, so they've outperformed. Life tends to last very long if they discharge from 100 to only 80 percent.

Bill: Next set to be replaced.

Kirk, next set coming up on a future HTV....possibly HTV 4.

Robert: On grapple fixture coming inside.

Emily, it needs an adaptor....will go out again on an upcoming EVA.

Philip for us :) on STS-133

Kirk: Major payload are fixed. Specific payloads in the PMM are in flux. Looking to maximize the upmass. It's normal business. Still developing some of the elements that will ride in the PMM. Robonaut 2 is riding on STS-133's PMM. Talked about adding up to two EVAs, still discussing at an official level on the details.

Previously it was the last flight with minimul crew. We want to leave the ISS with external high pressure gas tanks full. We added a crewmember, and then swapped order of flights. Have a host of EVA tasks, because after shuttle we have a gap of shuttle EVAs for the gas tanks. Want to take every opportunity before the shuttle retires.

Aussie reporter asking about the oil leak observations.

Kirk, it's not a booked time. But there's time available in the crew day to do earth observation. I see a new photo of the slick nearly every day. Not an official task, but it's been done.

Marcia on MRM-1.

Kirk, it's not unusual to have debris in any module that comes up, such as MPLMs - where they have to wear googles and masks. We had it in Nodes 1, 2 and 3 with metal debris. Airflow is not optimum because it's packed with US cargo.

Emily, crew is anxious to get the MRM-1 unloaded. Should start shortly after the mission has ended. 22nd of June is when it's needed.

Tariq on ISS overview:

Kirk, from pressurized module standpoint we only have the PMM to go. Two external carriers (STS-133, STS-134) and AMS (STS-134). Now have four docking ports on the Russian side. Very happy to be in this configuration.

On time off tomorrow and CETA cart issue.

Emily, expect they won't need encouragement for resting up. Confident they will rest and relax. CETA cart was only used on EVA-2, haven't heard of any specific need for work on a swing arm.

Irene on EVAs after shuttle, what about the EMUs...

Kirk, worked on extending the EMUs life to allow for use till 2020. Still working through that. Plan is not to fly them home. ATV, Progress, HTV are non recoverable. Dragon may be able to, but we're not counting on that for spacesuits.

PGF on Russian section allows for parking of SSRMS and Dextre further aft on Station. Gives us extra flexibility.

Over.

SRB Cam videos playing next. I'm off to cover Ariane 5's launch, so feel free to screenshot, although John 44 will have the full videos later.

From ISS Daily Report for 21/05/2010:

STS-132/ULF-4's EVA-3 was completed successfully by EV-1 Mike Good & EV-2 Garrett Reisman today in 6 hours 46 minutes, accomplishing all objectives plus one get-ahead.

During EVA-3, Good & Reisman:
. Installed a NH3 (ammonia) jumper between the P4 & P5 Trusses.
. Installed the two remaining batteries (E, F) at the P6 Truss, storing
the old units (#5, #6) on the ICC-VLD.
. Cleaned up the P6 Truss.
. Retrieved a PDGF from the Orbiter PLB and took it inside the A/L
(to be installed on the FGB during the Stage EVA-15 by Tracy Caldwell-Dyson
& Doug Wheelock on 08/07, thus creating a new base point for the SSRMS).
. Removed & re-installed P1 Truss RGFSB
(Radiator Grapple Fixture Stowage Beam) – deferred from STS-131/19A EVA-2 in April.
. Re-secured a MLI cavity flap on the EOTP Input Drive at the SPDM - a get-ahead.
. Stowed & organized EVA tools in the Z1 Truss ETSD
  (External Tool Stowage Device) - a get-ahead.

While Steve Bowen & Ken Ham provided campout & prebreathe support, Tracy Caldwell-Dyson & Piers Sellers supported the spacewalkers by operating the SSRMS from the Cupola. [The SSRMS first assisted at the P6 Truss worksite for the battery R&R, then moved the ICC-VLD with the old batteries to the POA on the MT MBS and released it in that translate/stow location. Final ICC-VLD berthing in the Orbiter PLB is scheduled for tomorrow.]

Skvortsov & Kornienko continued preparing the new MRM-1 for unloading. [Yesterday, upon ingress in MRM-1, the crew reported floating metal shavings. They closed the hatch and ran the circulation fans overnight in order for the filters to capture the shavings. Upon ingress today, wearing PPE (Personal Protection Equipment), Misha & Sasha reported that the amount of metal shavings had significantly decreased. Tonight, the crew will remove MRM-1 panels 201 & 202, close the hatch and activate the dust fans again to help capture the remaining shavings. This is not an uncommon experience with new modules, exposed to zero-G for the first time.]

Those images are just way too beautiful for words... I see a new desktop image!

Sad to think we're already so far into this mission...

I think 7357 would be good for a caption contest.

Next article, following up from Chris G's this morning, by me:

STS-132: Extensive evaluations allow for nominal Late Inspection plan:

http://www.nasaspaceflight.com/2010/05/sts-132-extensive-evaluations-nominal-late-inspection/

And no, that lead image is not available publically. It's a set of unreleased images (image dump) of what nasa.gov didn't release, stitched together by Ron.

Great article, all hail the DAT!

Thanks Mark, yes the DAT are awesome.

My entry to the caption competition:

"Gee, this thing would look great on the side of my house. Just think of the download speeds!!!"

Wouldn't it be cool if the best 10 of these captions actually made it into an Execute Package! NASA, if you're reading and are lacking inspiration... :D

I'm still waiting for a photo of Piers floating in Pirs!!! ;D

Soyuz 23 launch on the 14th of June, arrives on the 16th, then relocated on the MRM-1 docking port on the 27th. Next due is the progress on the 28th

Alas, Kirk Shireman has out-of-date plan. Soyuz TMA-19 launch is planned on June 15th, docking - on June 17th, relocation - on June 22nd. Progress M-06M launch is scheduled for June 30th.
