-
preparing for MRM-1 removal
-
Oleg setting up in the Cupola
-
The Russians are preparing for todays MRM-1 installation, they are setting up the computer network that will run from Cupola to the Zarya and then back to Cupola again as a safety during the Robotics.
In case something is wrong with the SSRMS when Zarya are driving MRM-1 in to dock SSRMS needs to be able so send an automatic signal to Zarya to stop.
-
testing laptop of the remote worksite, Service module camera
-
waiting on Moscow for 10 minutes, sunrise
-
Piers good to go now, go to go right into unberth
-
good transfer mode, step 4 in work
-
Piers is going to go over to station to set up a couple of cameras on the ROEU
-
Working ROEU demate
-
ROEU demated:
-
latches released, next is keel, PDRS powerup
-
pulling MRM-1 up
-
-
In low hover position
-
moving to handoff position
-
at handoff position with brakes on, SSRMS has go to grapple
-
-
SSRMS going to grapple, now grappling
-
Next will be SRMS ungrapple and back off
-
Good data from MRM-1 as it gets power/data connection through the SSRMS
-
Power has been applied, TCU 2 prime, putting step 5 in work
-
SRMS go to ungrapple
-
backing off
-
-
SSRMS go to move to predock position, SRMS clear
-
MRM-1 will be docked over Russia so that Russian ground stations can monitor, starting auto move sequence
-
-
-
-
crew has such a good view out of cupola they forget to change the camera views for the ground
-
passing over Mali
-
-
lost station ku, shuttle remains for a bit
MRM-1 at the pre-dock position
-
Shame that the arm is directly in line with the probe and dock in the hires view.
-
Are they controlling the SSRMS from the cupola?
-
Waiting to fly over Russian ground stations before docking the MRM-1, next maneuver loaded
-
Are they controlling the SSRMS from the cupola?
No, just monitoring, I think. The full workstation still hasn't been transferred to the cupola yet.
-
MCC-H just said 10-min LOS, but still go to drive the module to capture?
-
And they are ahead of schedule as this event was for 50 minutes past the hour.
-
-
Yes it has, the crew is controlling SSRMS from the Cupola
Didn't note that, read that they're only monitoring and giving cues with a single laptop in the Cupola.
-
Go for Maneuver to dock viewing position for SRMS
-
SRMS in viewing position
-
Go for MRM-1 dock.
-
view of MRM-1 probe
-
IMU align on 1 and 2, transferring caution and warning data from station to shuttle
-
view of MRM-1 probe
That's key too. The main contingency relates to that (writing an article):
"In the event MRM-1 cannot be installed and the docking probe cannot be sufficiently retracted, EVA removal of the docking system will be required to return the module to the payload bay."
-
Still waiting for the docking probe to be extended, though.
-
Telemetry showing a dm off on docking ring, going to take a 5 minute break but leaving SSRMS brakes off
-
Are they controlling the SSRMS from the cupola?
No, just monitoring, I think. The full workstation still hasn't been transferred to the cupola yet.
??? I think Cuppola RWS has already transferred and functional.

I didn't note that. That's a Big Deal for ISS, figured it would have been given more attention in the spaceflight press or even in here. ???

They are using the Probe & Drogue docking system, not Hybrid.
-
fully extended
-
Extending of the probe has gone to plan.

It was, numerous times.
Wow, definitely missed it then.
:-[
-
activating camera, good picture, coordinating with MCC-Moscow
-
Go for Docking of MRM-1
-
rearranging Russian computers in cupola, will be about 10 minutes
-
Going to wait till sunrise for docking, 6-7 minutes away

-
Maneuvering to MRM-1 alignment position
-
moving to dock position
-
contact and capture!
-
Capture! And very visible.
-
Capture!
-
Appropriate, docking Rassvet at orbital sunrise.
-
Yay, it worked! ;D
I must admit, I had my doubts... ;)
-
Still no contact 1 showing. No auto docking noted on laptop.
-
some issues, but ground says everything looks good
Did not get contact 1 because Garrett did such a good job, hole in one
-
probe retraction in work
-
We can pretend this is a UK mission with Piers making the calls ;)
-
Oh excellent, there's an array moving in the background of retraction.
-
retracted, hooks closing
-
Interface now sealed, MRM-1 now hard-docked to the Nadir port of the FGB
-
Job done, MRM-1 installed. Excellent.

Nice shot showing the Russian flag and the "Canada" lable on the SSRMS, truely international!
-
telemetry from module now being received through the ISS
-
Arm to safe mode
-
Nice words in Russian from the US astronauts. They'll need to get used to that thanks to Bolden.

You know, we really should have a thread for that subject (there's already a billion threads on that subject ;))
Thanks to Ron for the excellent coverage of the cool robotics.
-
So, how long until the SSRMS is free to release and move away?
-
You can tell the SSRMS was pretty much at maximum reach on this one...
-
So, how long until the SSRMS is free to release and move away?
Not long, as the plan for an FI (which isn't going to happen) had the SSRMS grappling the OBSS in less than an hour (for handoff to the SRMS). So that points to the SSRMS not being required to grapple MRM-1 for all that long.
-
Missed the start of what Kyle just said, was it confirmation the OBSS task will be added to EVA-2?
-
And the SSRMS is ungrappled and retracting.
-
Missed the start of what Kyle just said, was it confirmation the OBSS task will be added to EVA-2?
He sad something about that they are looking into how to fit it into tomorrows task. Didn't here a confirmation that it WILL but it sure did sound like it since they discussed where in the time line to put it

Copy. Sounds like it will be EVA-2, and pending MMT approval then. We've got the proceedures on L2, so will write it up...although I've got about four articles worth to write up, so given the rest of the day is a slower pace, I may go article crazy ;D

That is pretty good as they've actually used some of the MMT presentation materials we've had on L2 yesterday. Though we've got a lot about 10 presentations/150 pages, so will have a good article on this.

"No comment (laughing). Have a great day Garrett (more laughing)."
-
Intention to push the EVA campout and start time up by 30 minutes, via the planning just noted on the loop.
-
LDRI safing task being worked on.
-
upcoming on NASATV -
-
They want the OBSS LDRI to be tilted down as far as it'll go, via low rates. Has to be done in darkness.
Will inhibit part of the LDRI to ensure it won't "fire" (heat) - which would be bad for spacewalkers. Also will have to avoid some sharp edges.
-
EVA-2 proceedures are privatized as per normal.
I'll have a reasonably beefy article on site within the hour.

Some good stuff, and a lovely comment from Kenn Ham.
On Atlantis' "final" mission:
Kenn: "There is potential for her to fly again, but she's served us well. We thank the entire team for putting her together to fly for us."
On ISS after shuttle:
"We'll need to learn how to best manage resources" (whilst noting more vehicles will come up. There's a lot of spares on board, there's not a lot of items outstanding that require the shuttle payload's size."
Question about oil slick.
Piers: "Been too busy to see it, but when you get to travel around the planet you get to see the footprint of man, some of it good, some of it bad. People will eventually get to look after the planet."
What's that on your leg? (checklist)
Piers: "It's my brain" ;D
About what they'll tell the kids on their acomplishments:
"There's nothing like it. Spacewalking is the most outlandish thing I've got to do. I'm 5ft 4in and they laughed at me when I said I wanted to do spacewalks. Steve had the lion's share of the tasks. We had some difficult moments, but the sense of elation when we fixed it is something I'll always remember."
Great work from MSNBC.
-
Fox News being very tinpot with the audio messed up and putting the crew through what sounds like a receptionist.
What on Earth are they playing over the loop. Fox news has some angry politics show playing. Mute the stupid thing.
This is very disrespectful.
-
HA! Houston ACR decide enough is enough and say "Fox News will not be participating." Well done!
-
CNN up now.
"What's it like up there?"
Kenn: The place is much bigger than when I was here two years ago. Seeing the entire Earth in the Cupola is spectacular."
Piers "You could lose people on here, it's huge."
"What's it like to be on this last shuttle" (I hope he means last Atlantis flight - he's corrected himself).
"It's bittersweet and something I never anticipated seeing all three of the shuttles."
On EVAs:
"We train really hard for it, it's strange and it's outlandish."
Can you see the oil spill and volcanic ash?
Oleg: "About oil, 30 mins ago we passed over the Mexican Gulf and took lots of pictures. It's not good and I feel not good about it. The ash, we can see the ash especially in the evening. We can't see the volcano. We can monitor many of these events from Station, it's very useful."
On working with the Americans:
Alexandar: "I am glad to work with American cosmonauts and astronauts. I know very good Kenn Ham" :)
Event ends.
-
Back to the angry politicians
-
Uh oh, they are giving Fox News another go.
"The people spat on me" (again, they have more stuff on the war over the loop). Again asking them to hold. Sounds like this is going to be live at least.
Yep, it's live: "The most extraordinary interview of the day"
HA! And Houston cut off the interview after one question! That'll teach them.

Haha no I haven't gone through the entire thread yet and I love those time lapses they are great Ron!! :)
But I am hoping someone recorded the robotics in regular time....
-
MSB starting. Will transcribe items of interest.
Emily's on :)
-
FD Emily:
The contact sensor that didn't trip was caused by the docking being right down the middle. It went picture perfect.
EVA-2 has the new task added to the start of the spacewalk. We will present the boom to a crewmember and he will tie out the cable that's causing the wedge. Will then carry on with the battery tasks as per normal.
Busy day all the way around.
-
Questions:
OBSS:
Emily: There's a cart only needs moving one step to the P6 truss for the task.
Going back to the new antenna?
Emily: Yes, we have increased the priority on that and will revisit on EVA-3 after the battery tasks. Then head back up to the SGANT and attempt to further torque down the bolts holding it to the boom. Have back up scenarios.
Portable Water dispenser:
Emily: There's a problem where it shows where the bag is engaged. Some of the lights that are normally on are off. Can't get hot water, but can get ambient water from PWD.
MRM-1 Ingress set up:
Emily: Hatch opening tomorrow for filter operations. Clamps installed next. FD8 slight amount of time to begin transfers out of the module. It's on large metal racks that slice through the module. You get the cargo out and throw the rack away (for Progress). Deadline for final config is the next Soyuz docking, as they need to get through the MRM-1
First major use of Cupola RWS:
Emily: Used it three days in a row. Views are stunning enough they forgot to move the cameras. Appparently there's been no problems.
OBSS Cable task timeline:
Emily: Estimating it will take 20-30 minutes. Prior to Agency FRR we had 30 minutes booked for a battery stow task. Do not need to do that. Transfered to this task. Still hopeful of three battery exchanges, but willing to extend to a fourth battery. Steve will stop off at the cart and take care of that, while Mike heads off to P6.
-
Additional inspection:
DAT still evaluating if we need to do any further inspections. If we get the LDRI back, it should be suffient. Four or five spots that had not been fully inspected, and still determining if they need a camera view or not. FD7 or FD9 would be the days available.
Antenna issue root cause:
Couple of theories, such as thermal properties....guide pins were expanded. Now the bolts should be thermally equal, will try and get it bolted down nice and flush.
Plan B:
Tether in place so there's no concerns of it coming off. Tie down plan is back up to getting the bolts down.
-
DPC waiting for a crewmember to finish his PMC.
Crew ending their day very soon.
-
Emily: Hatch opening tomorrow for filter operations.
Hmm, NASA TV Schedule Rev. C says hatch opening will occur on Thursday (FD-7), not tomorrow (FD-6). Do we know which date is correct? Thanks.
EDIT:
Today's ISS Daily Report says hatch opening will occur on FD-7 as well.

EDIT:

According to MSB and Emily the hatch will be opened tomorrow so they can install a filter and after that it will be closed again so the air can be clean over a couple of days before ingress.

From ISS Daily Report for 18/05/2010:
MRM-1 was transferred from Atlantis’ Payload Bay and berthed to the FGB Nadir port without hitch today.
CDR Ken Ham & PLT Tony Antonelli, at the controls of the SRMS, grappled and unberthed MRM-1 in the Payload Bay, then transferred it to the Park position.
With MS-4 Piers Sellers & MS-1 Garrett Reisman operating the SSRMS, MRM-1 was handed over from the SRMS to SSRMS and then moved to the FGB Nadir port to the Predock position.
Docking activities were closely monitored by CDR Kotov from the Cupola and by FE-1 Skvortsov from the SM via streaming video on the “Simvol-Ts” TsVKU color monitor.
Extension of the MRM-1 docking probe was then completed.
MRM-1 berthing and installation at the FGB Nadir port occurred shortly thereafter, with all hooks driven and latches & probe retracted. [MRM-1 uses the StM probe-and-cone type docking system, consisting of an active docking assembly (ASA) with a probe (SSh), which fits into the cone (SK) on the passive docking assembly (PSA) for initial soft dock and subsequent retraction to hard dock. The ASA is mounted on MRM-1, while the PSA sits on the FGB.]
Before MRM-1 transfer, FE-6 Creamer configured the SSC-1 A31p laptop in the FGB and activated the VWS /SSC-1 (Video Streaming Workstation/Station Support Computer-1) laptops, followed by Skvortsov running the standard test of the RS analog video conversion “scheme” for transmitting RS analog signals by streaming video via US Ku-band assets. [After the berthing, TJ powered the video system off again.]
For the docking, a Russian laptop was configured in the USOS. [Oleg & Alexander set up the remote RS work station in the Cupola by connecting its hatch drag-through cable between Node 3 & Node 1 and then conducted a test of the command capability of the configuration.]
Subsequently, the CDR followed the SRMS/SSRMS MRM-1 berthing maneuvers from the Cupola remote RS station, afterwards taking down the OpsLAN cable between Node 1 & Node 3 again while FE-1 deactivated the BRTK TVS video equipment with the “Simvol-Ts” TsVKU in the SM.
For return to the ground on STS-132, FE-5 Noguchi collected ITCS (Internal Thermal Control System) coolant samples from the Node 2 LTL (Low Temperature Loop) & MTL (Moderate Temperature Loop), and of the ITCS LTL in the JPM. [Node 3 samples were collected on 15/05.]
EVA-1 SGANT Attachment Issue:
During EVA-1, the crew encountered free play between the dish and antenna book, i.e., a ~1mm gap which remained even when torque was increased. Leading cause is that the dish and the boom were not in thermal equilibrium which could have caused binding of the guide pins. Impacts to EVA-3 duration and scheduled tasks are being assessed.
EVA-2 LDRI Cable Fix:
As a new ~30min task added to tomorrow’s EVA-2 timeline, a crewmember will attempt to undo the obstructed Shuttle LDRI sensor cable by releasing it from its pinched spot, pull the snagged cable section toward the cable connector and install a tie wrap around the two ends of the LDRI cable. [The spacewalker will be stationed on an APFR at the starboard CETA cart WIF-2, and the LDRI will be presented to him by the SRMS/OBSS.]

Let's not go there, but concur :)

Sure. I actually used the single published photo, but we've since got the full set of about 20 photos (panned from end to end, full vehicle) in L2 and have people creating a stitch, which is going to be rediculously amazing. So there's a better one to come that'll lead an article (FD7 I reckon)!

The question didn't get them kicked the second time around, they just cut the event half way through Pier's response to it. Must have run out of time (mainly due to them messing about the first time). Really was shockingly bad and very unprofessional.

If you don't mind me asking, what was the question that FOX news asked that got them kicked the second time?
The question didn't get them kicked the second time around, they just cut the event half way through Pier's response to it. Must have run out of time (mainly due to them messing about the first time). Really was shockingly bad and very unprofessional.
Maybe I am wrong, but maybe it was caused by KU pass end?
