Might combine this with a Saturday EVA-2 thread, as I'm not entirely sure how much coverage we'll be able to take from this sort of Flight Day. Anyhoo....

FD5: No Focused Inspection
– EVA2 camp-out (Foreman and Bresnik)
– Node 1 mod kit installation
Please note, this is interactive, but all posts need to be on topic. If you post images, no more than two per post.

May as well throw the NASA TV schedule up here. This is from Rev E. Keep in mind this may change through the day.

A selection of STS-129 Flight Data Files have finally been posted on the NASA website:

Heh!
Some morning PAO events I see. To the Americans....is that morning show they appear to be going on live with something that has a reasonably big audience?

Yes, SportsCenter is huge. :) Wasn't aware of Tom Joyner, but sounds like he's radio...so maybe I've heard his show sporadically while driving at night across Texas.

OH! It's ESPN sportscenter? Used to get my MLS fix off that via the power of the internet :) Wow, that is good.

OH! It's ESPN sportscenter? Used to get my MLS fix off that via the power of the internet :) Wow, that is good.
Yes, but not until this afternoon...
-
Is MCC-M giving work instructions orally so the on bard crew has to write it down? Sounds like a hassle.
-
PAO event starting.
Asking how they are doing and noting transfers being the focus today.
"Just trying to keep station running has been a real joy."
-
Bill Harwood asks about the depress alarm last night.
Charlie "They are still getting the full story, happened at the start of sleep, so no one had gone into total sleep, so it was fun to get everyone together and say 'hey, what's going on? Wasn't a big deal"
-
Pregnant wife and Thanksgiving questions.
Looks like a USMC and US Army banners behind them, can't make out the other one.
-
Pregnant wife and Thanksgiving questions.
Looks like a USMC and US Army banners behind them, can't make out the other one.
Most likely Navy since Wilmore is a navy guy.
-
Looks like the local TV part is live. WFTV - Nashville.
This will be generic. "Any issues?"
"Things are going real well, no issues at this time."
Local questions. Challenges of 12 crewmembers.
Charlie says it's seemless and more of a plus as everyone knows what they are doing and understand the hardware.
-
Question about shuttle retirement.
"The shuttle is an amazing vehicle, but every vehicle has its time. We're ready for the next vehicle (did not say Ares I, but probably wouldn't to a local TV station). It's about keeping station alive as long as possible." - Charlie.
"The shuttle has helped build this, and played a major part and a tribute to the amazing machine it is." (Nice!)
-
Oops, having Ku dropouts at the end of that segment.
Fox News radio next - live again. "Special Report".
Barry asked how he's finding it. "It's truely amazing, I'm in sensory overload. The launch was A-MAZ-ING :).
Asks about the shorter mission. Charlie notes the lack of SSPTS.
Charlie asked about the change in the size of station. Says he didn't notice the change in volume between his first and second flight, but can really tell the difference on this flight.
More pregnant questions. Barry makes a point about it being the same as on military duty around the world.

Better shots:

ELC-2 grapple can be done at any time today. That's Out of the PLB via SRMS. "Totally off the plate" on the timeline.
Crew suggests completing the task with the SSRMS today too. MCC-H say it's best to keep the schedule and do that tomorrow as they can't get the SSRMS ready in time.
-
Going over Argentina. Crew getting ready for grappling ELC-2 right now!
We'll also have a ELC article on today from Chris G via an interview with Boeing's Eve Stavros.
-
Ready for some orbiter robotics.
-
Nice shot of the aft panels on Atlantis.
-
What was Barry doing with that camera in front of window? It seemed like he wanted install it there but after couple minutes he escaped from our view..
-
Good grapple.
-
Heading over Italy, Greece and Romania.
14 mins to the next PAO event.
-
Looks like they will pull ELC-2 out of the PLB and get as far as handing over to the SSRMS, but not take it to install until tomorrow (plan seems to keep changing, though I'm working off what the PAO is saying).
-
never get tired of these
-
passing Italy and Greece
-
Haha!! Something on the loop about dougnuts in the conference room - spoken in a Homer drooling type way ;D
-
Looks like they will pull ELC-2 out of the PLB and get as far as handing over to the SSRMS, but not take it to install until tomorrow (plan seems to keep changing, though I'm working off what the PAO is saying).
Are you sure about that? I thought they would do the installation of ELC-2 during an EVA was because they only had a limited amount of time before it needed to be installed after it got removed for the payload bay.

Yes indeed, if I remember correctly ELCs cant be keepin out of feed (in payload bay or structure on station) longer than few hours - I guess it is around 6-8 hours..
-
Next PAO event. Uh oh, this sounds like a mess.
-
Hehe.. they are looking cool! :D
Got some probs on da begining..
-
Ha, they've worked it out now. Sounds like one of those giggle based shows ;)
-
"This ain't down the street man!" Guy sounds like Don King ;D
-
Sounds like one of those giggle based shows ;)
Yea.. pretty weird. A lot of laugh in the background..
Question are so straight :P
-
Questions are going to annoy regular followers ;)
"And you guys are hanging on when you're going 17,500mph."
"There mission was to install an antenna at the station and they did it in two hours"
"Take off, how cool was that."
"This mission has two African Americans onboard"
"Are you guys tied down?"
-
Space-based Moonwalk! :D
-
A bit shocked about how they are making a big deal out of their race.
-
Playing them a Stevie Wonder song
"Oh player, that was cold man!"
-
Houston ACR's had enough of that! Seriously folks, get that played back on John 44's recording, as that ended with heavy breathing. Surreal!
-
A bit shocked about how they are making a big deal out of their race.
You're English too, so I know where that came from (wouldn't happen here). Pretty common in the US to have that sort of focus. Long story, best not to get into it, but it wasn't a negative thing.
-
That was the most weird PAO event Ive ever seen ;)

If someone could keep an eye on coverage, I've got to go fill L2 up with MMT stuff.

NTV goes into video file, so back after that.

It's all gone a bit quiet - could be lunch time.
-
A bit dark, but ELC-2 is on the end of the SRMS:
-
Started troubleshooting on the OCA data link in high bandwidth.
-
Saturday's spacewalkers.
-
JEM RMS being retracted.
-
-
-
-
Moving the arm around...
-
Ha, nice one Roger. My feed froze, wondered what was going on for a moment!
-
I wish they'd show more of the JEMRMS/JEF camera views on NASA TV ... these are fantastic!
-
Hmm, if this is OCA troubleshooting related, they don't appear to be on the orbiter. I'm going to need someone to chip in and explain if this is OCA related:
-
Ah, ultrasound card swap is what we're looking at, per call that just went up.
-
wow... talk about In-flight repair... :)
-
Looks like ultrasound repair to me.
Hmm, if this is OCA troubleshooting related, they don't appear to be on the orbiter. I'm going to need someone to chip in and explain if this is OCA related:
-
They are literally replacing them all it would seem.
-
Ah, ultrasound card swap is what we're looking at, per call that just went up.
Yes, and there's some nice documentation on this in the flight day package!
-
It's in Columbus module, question is whats that rack, EPM?
-
Had trouble with the top board, but after Huntsville asked them to wiggle it, just a little bit, it's gone in :)
-
It's in Columbus module, question is whats that rack, EPM?
HRF-1(Human Research Facility-1) rack.
-
Out of Ku, crew heading for lunch.
-
And they are back to transfers.
-
Iss should be over England right now.
-
Controller handover in the ISS FCR. Replanning EVA-2 continues.

Quiz time for you all (watch Fuji win ;))
Name the machine:

And that's working again :)

Jeff's still busy with the outfitting in Node 1.
-
lots of plumbing..
-
still working on plumbing and transfers

some horsing around... :)
-
Not butterflies yet...
-
Oh yea... and there is the view as well... Currently crossing over Texas

-
Not butterflies yet...
The number of pellets is increasing though... :)

Not butterflies yet...
I for one welcome our caterpillar overlords.

Not butterflies yet...
I for one welcome our caterpillar overlords.
So do I.
And the crew will wake up and BOOM, instant transformation...lol (jk)
-
coming up
-
I'm guessing SportsCenter will be focusing on Leland ;)
-
All the crew seem to be having a work out!
-
Wow, that ARED sure does fly around.
-
Poor Jeff's getting ripped over that Army vs Navy game.
"Sure looks like an odd looking uniform"
-
Some sound problems.
-
ESPN SportsCenter on (can someone in the US check to see if it's live?)
Asking what their roles are, and how they get their sports news. Usual stuff, enjoying their missions, miss their families.
-
ESPN SportsCenter on (can someone in the US check to see if it's live?)
No, SportsCenter doesn't start until 6 pm Eastern. (In the afternoon/evenings, anyway.)
-
ESPN SportsCenter on (can someone in the US check to see if it's live?)
No, SportsCenter doesn't start until 6 pm Eastern. (In the afternoon/evenings, anyway.)
Ah right. Will be worth seeing what they do with the recording later then! :)
Newswoman on now, generic stuff, then asks about what it's like to be two African Americans in space.
Good answers about how the station is more than that, that it's diverse throughout nations and religions. Notes there's five black astronauts and now Charlie Bolden in charge of NASA.
-
Local station on.
Points made about getting kids involved in space flight and science - because they haven't seen people do that in their immediate circle of family and friends.
Sometimes their teachers don't direct them towards the possibility of aspiring to astronauts, doctors etc. You can do anything you put your mind to.
Also the media, the media have to show things like this. We need the kids to see this is an opportunity.
This news guy is pretty good! Asking question about medical advances via Station, such as from long duration flight, and the benefits for people on the ground.
Leyland asked about a game involving a team he used to play for.
-
10 mins to the MSB.
-
MSB on.
-
Brian -
No FI allowed for smooth transfers and work inside Node 1, changing lines in prep for arrival of Node 3. Estimated four days of work, but the crew completed all the work today.
Mike and Randy - and IV Bobby - are preparing for EVA-2.
Couple of changes to EVA-2. Node 2 Zenith "flap" to be left open (camera behind it) - removed from timeline. PAS deploy from EVA-2 was done on EVA-1. So PAS from EVA-3 now moved to EVA-2.
Crews doing great. Atlantis and Station doing excellent. JEM RMS returned to stow - ops for mission complete.
ELC-2: Unberth and handoff.
-
-
Bill H on WPA.
WPA was on degraded more.
Today 17 liters was processed, so that's an improvement. Now looking how to manage the condensant. Need to process it, so checking rate of collection and process to see if we can manage that. If not, the Russian segment can process and there's a second storage tank if the WPA can't produce fast enough.
Focus isn't on investigation, or returning parts, on a somewhat degraded - but working - mode.
Two sources - one is condensate, and the other is bags of water. Was producing more than we needed so it was bagged. Prior to the mission when the WPA wasn't processing any water, we used the bagged water.
-
Question from Gina S on how the crew have performed on the maintainence.
Brian talks about how they spend lots of time working on IFM proceedures and today they worked through a 50 page proceedure without ever needing to contact the ground. Brian was very proud of that.
Frank and Jeff did a fantastic job. Crew also contribute towards IFM via their own skills, on top of the generic training as the racks look mechnically very similar to each other when they are stripped down.
You look at the spacecraft they will be living in and you train them in the generics/core training.
Baby questions! Brian doesn't know anything more on that.
-
Robert Pearlman on getaheads in the timeline.
Lists them, but I missed it. Breaking torque on (....) and a relocation. Did you get them written down Robert?
On the depress alarm. Originated in MRM-2, they aren't sure why yet.
Marcia on Randy's baby again.
I wish I could get an exact time, as we'll put it in the timeline :)
If the baby comes during the EVA:
Randy will be focused on the spacewalk - that's the number one priority.
-
Robert Pearlman on getaheads in the timeline.
Lists them, but I missed it. Beraking torque on (....) and a relocation. Did you get it written down Robert?
1) breaking torque on an ATA (attempted on 128/17A)
2) tool relocate from space station to tool box
3) jumper P1/P3 truss area
-
James Dean on transfers.
Brian will get a list, doesn't have them to hand. Does know they had the AVRS payload transfered, but needs to tag up with the specialists to get a transfer list.
They are on track for the 60 percent target for the day's transfers.
Tariq M on challenges of the EVA:
Brian - ELC-2 installation is purely robotic. Only if the capture latch or mating adaptor have issues, they would use the PGTs as a contingency.
Lists the EVA tasks. Notes they've been surprised by a couple of the PAS deploys. They aren't needed for a couple of missions, but they may turn out to be the most complicated. EVA-1's was a pleasant surprise.
Tariq: How is the mission going.
Brian: Don't want to jinx it, but everything has gone very well. Very clean ascent - with no FI. EVA-1 was the most agreesive part of the flight plan and that was flawless and had the big PAS get-ahead. Also the Node 1 getaheads has put us in a great position. So far it has been an outstanding mission. Looking forward to having more fun in the days to come.
-

1) breaking torque on an ATA (attempted on 128/17A)

Awesome! Thanks much!
Presser concluded.
-
MT has transitioned during the presser to support ELC-2 handoff from SRMS.
Correction, it's still translating down the truss.
-
-
And the MT has arrived at the worksite.
Also a view of the SRMS grappled to ELC-2
-
Nearing the end of the flight day. One hour to bedtime for ISS. 90 minutes for STS-129.
-
Charlie and Megan are having some banter again ;D
Megan: "Did you get the cover on the...."
Charlie "Ohhhh yeeeah!!"
Megan: "And did...
Charlie interupts "Did I tell you Leyland is the man?"
Megan: "Ok, I'm going to write that down."
Atlantis set up for her bedtime too.
And wishing each other goodnight, so that's probably going to be it for today. Turned out to be more interesting, so will remain standalone.
New thread for EVA-2 tomorrow.

-
SSRMS moving very slowly
-
-
-
flight day highlights about to start...
-
Emergency depress alarm again. Believed to be false.
-
Talking about inhibiting the Columbus fire alarm. Unclear to me if the fire alarm actually went off this time.
-
Crew sounds calm ... maybe a bit sleepy.
-
Houston instructions: Exit Airlock. Stay in masks. Stay in normal mode.
-
Delaying crew highlights to stay with coverage of this false alarm.
-
Lots of beeping over the flight loop. Ground wants them in 2.1 in the emergency book and please report. Stating again that this is believed to be a false alarm.
-
Iss reports no fire or smoke in airlock.
-
They seem to think the MRM-2 is where this problem is originating from...
-
well this is gonna mess up the nitrogen purge for Randy and Mike ...
-
Go to doff masks at this time. Some questions on O2: on or off. O2 is off, bleeding out of lines to masks. So they are to doff masks until the O2 valve is turned on. Do not want to go on tanks at this time.
-
Calling Atlantis now. Telling them to airlock fan alpha to off. Swap Lioh can in slot bravo and report when complete.
-
low press O2 is now on. Masks can be donned.
-
off masks 2 minutes (for pre breathe purposes)
-
Poisk: The Module That Cried Rapid Depress
-
PAO reports the time off masks should not impact EVA tomorrow.
-
Will prioritize return to campout so airlock astronauts can return to sleep as soon as possible.
-
Had to step away. But sounds like they are working through normal post alarm procedures. Had two false fire alarms (station airlock and in Columbus).
-
EV1/EV2 had to leave airlock during fire procedures. Went on masks to keep pre breathe. They were off masks for 2 minutes. (I believe due to O2 valve not open yet).
-
Atlantis given a go to return to sleep. No change in wake up time. ISS caution and warning is inhibited in Atlantis (ground is monitoring).
-
Had to check the LIOH canister - Ground asked to check if they removed the cover prior to installation... apparently they didn't... They called down that they had now removed the cover and re-installed.. Atlantis crew going back to bed now..
-
Go to sleep, right. I would have a hard time to.
-
They are planning to go to exercise pre breathe (takes too long to get back to regular airlock mode) I think it was a couple hours. So back to old style exercise mode to purge nitrogen from bloodstream of EV1/EV2
-
Extra 30 minutes of sleep is suggested to Scorch (and he agrees). This will let EVA continue to keep all pre planned objectives but maybe not the 30 minutes of get aheads.
-
MRM-2, the prankster module.
"You sleep yet? Dar? I wake you now!! HA HA!"
-
Why doesn't the PAO shut up so we can hear the air-to-ground?
-
Had to step away again but now PAO reports Atlantis crew is go to sleep again and ISS is still working through the post alarm procedures. Crew will sleep in extra 30 minutes. Spaceflightnow.com reports that the EVA duration will likely be shortened.
-
Why doesn't the PAO shut up so we can hear the air-to-ground?
This seems to be happening only when there is A/G Comm. It might be by design, or maybe I'm just too cynical.
-
I don't think it is an intentional effort to hide anything as it happens a lot during the missions even when everything is "boring." Some of the voices in the background when they are talking may have been the control room - not air to ground. Nevertheless, I also find it annoying when they talk over the air to ground loop.

MRM-2, the prankster module.
"You sleep yet? Dar? I wake you now!! HA HA!"
How ironic. If I recall, the installation of new U.S. solar arrays during STS-117 caused a power spike that affected Russian computers onboard the ISS and caused them to crash...and this time around, the installation of a new Russian module is affecting systems onboard U.S. and European modules.
Another meaningless observation: Atlantis was the orbiter for 117 too. :)
-
How ironic. If I recall, the installation of new U.S. solar arrays during STS-117 caused a power spike that affected Russian computers onboard the ISS and caused them to crash
Nope. The install didn't break the computers, it was all a coincidence (and a lucky one since the station would have been in trouble without STS-117 docked.)
