Reminder to all.
There is a dedicated weather thread located at the link below. Please discuss weather there, keep this for live updates.

The Roses have arrive in MCC

wake-up song:

-
Atlantis has completed IMU align
-
Weather in Florida dynamic. Crosswind right at the limit, showers in area. Next decision point just prior to payload bay door closing. Plan is to press on to that point.

Starting orbit 163:

Weather in Florida dynamic. Crosswind right at the limit, showers in area. Next decision point just prior to payload bay door closing. Plan is to press on to that point.
Good spot. They just reconfirmed that with Scooter.
Go/No Go on PLBD Closure for the first opportunity.
-
Hold off on radiator bypass to FES - step before PLBD closure. Waiting on next weather check....30 mins from now.
-
Big picture:
No decision yet. Lost redundacy to a TDRS sat. Another failure and we'll lose communications.
Still looking at weather, holding at bypass to FES.
Do not proceed past if we lose comm. Might lose comm for an hour if we lose the TDRS, which is on the pass coming up in two mins.
-
No decision on landing yet.
Have lost redundancy with failure of TDRS 171 so next failure may result in long comms interruptions.
Atlantis not to go past RAD bypass step in checklist without specific confirmation. In absence of comms, hold before that step.
-
Anyone have any more info on TDRS 171 failure?
-
Atlantis told to stay in VERNS. On the handover to the TDRS that's on redundancy right now. Was a two minute handover and nothing heard since.
-
Steve Lindsey isn't taking off in a T-38 until the weather improves. Not looking all that likely for today so far!
-
Still nothing heard.
I'm looking north and waving but no response. :D
-
Comm check, they LOST TDRS 171, moved to 174 - which has worked, but will only be for 8 minutes. Working to extend it, otherwise their will be lengthy loss of comms.
WAVE OFF FIRST OPPORTUNITY.
-
Comms restore.
Lost further redundancy on TDRS 171. Working on using 174. Wave off on landing on this attempt.
Remain in VERNS and no backout required.
-
Have comms for another 6 or 7 minutes.
-
Still nothing heard.
I'm looking north and waving but no response. :D
I'll get you a phone number and you can hold it next to the NTV feed for the crew ;)
-
Now going through some backout steps, minor and the result of a reassess
Also passing up some steps for about 1hr 10 in the future. Comms are really in a mess if they are working that far in front!
-
What's up with the TDRS, folks?
-
They've got the loss of TDRS down to 30 minutes, hoping to making it less.
"Looking forward to speaking to you on the other side" - Scooter.
-
Two and a half minutes until a 30 minute handover. Working on satellite configs to make that smaller if possible.
-
Second Rev Deorbit burn at 9:34am Central (3:34pm UK)
Would result in landing at 10:39am Central (4:39pm UK).
-
Comm check, they LOST TDRS 171, moved to 174 - which has worked, but will only be for 8 minutes. Working to extend it, otherwise their will be lengthy loss of comms.
What exactly is TDRS 171? One of the S-band systems? And if so, on which satellite?
-
Hi,
Do all the different types of comms/bands go through TDRS? - is there no other way to communicate?
Is the TDRS problem due to satellite problems? - if they've gone faulty I assume they will have to launch another?
Ian
-
Weather still not looking good
-
Not great. Some hope for the second rev due to potential for gaps in the weather.

As I understand it, TDRS 171 is a satellite!

I think it's TDRS E/5, at 171.0°W, designator 1991-054B. Launched on STS-43 out of, ironically, Atlantis. :-)
-
If all else fails, Atlantis will be in direct ground comms soon.
-
I'm pretty sure we have the TDRS map for STS-125 on one of the STS-125 MOD FRR presentations on L2. If someone can find it (I can't multitask :)) feel free to screenshot it into here.

Thanks =) Couldn't make any sense of 171 with just 9 TDRS ever launched.
-
TDRS 171 is back!. Have comm check with Atlantis.
-
Launched on STS-43 out of, ironically, Atlantis. :-)
And 171 returns the favor to Atlantis by returning to life. Comm check is good.
-
Ah, 171 is back again. It's way too quiet otherwise. ;)

Some coincinence isn't it. By the way, does Ankh Morpork have comms satellites? Is there a stable orbit about a disc?
-
Now there is an orbit with a difference.
-
Now there is an orbit with a difference.
Ooh! Interesting! :-D

This one includes some of the TDRS. It's mainly for STS-400...but I guess it should be the same. ;)

Nice work, that's the slide I had in mind :)
-
That weather shot does not seem to be improving rapidly but the storm band is moving north slowly. Trouble is, there is another one behind it!
-
Possible WCS related messages - no action required. They are looking at it. (No further info before someone asks).
-
FDA to inhibit on Step 66. "We're going to continue to look at the issue".
-
No action on spec 66 messages, may be due to WCS. MCC going to inhibit FDA for spec 66 messages and look at the problem further.
I don't know what that means but hopefully someone can explain.
-
PAO:
First landing opp waved off.
Second opportunity requires OMS burn at 9:44.
PLBD closure for second opportunity is at about 1:11 from now. RAD bypass to FES in about 57 min for that opportunity.
-
71 minutes to PLBD closure - if approved.
Three hours to the deorbit burn - if approved.
-
During the recap, Kyle Herring also noted that a decision on the payload bay door close activities would be around 7:40 am Eastern. (Heavy emphasis on 'around' -- could be before or after.)
-
Spec 66 O2 flow messages. May have been intermittent valve in WCS. Asking for cycle of WCS control handle.
"That's the handle used in operating the commode?"
"That's affirm."
-
Double post, but liked the laughter. Basically "Flush the bog, that'll sort it" :) Next time someone goes to the toliet, ask them to make sure they cycle the control handle" :)
Spec 66 O2 Flow Messages:
"We might of seen a problem with the valve in the WCS, intermittent
"We'd like to see you cycle the WCS control handle.
"I understand that's the handle we use for the commode." - Scooter.
(Laughter at MCC)
"What else could I call it" - Scooter.
-
And that's worked, no further action.
-
Cabin O2 flow.
Saw the cycle. No further action required.
Space plumbing! It's bad enough with gravity. Unblocking the loo (or to be more correct, dunny) without gravity beggars description :)
-
Cabin O2 flow. Reenable channel 22 for caution and warning. MCC sees no further problem for that system.
Meanwhile, the latest prediction, subject to lots of caveats, is:
-
Coming up to time for reorientation of orbiter to promote cold soak of electronics bays to give additional protection against reentry.
-
...how many times have all of had to go:
"wiggle that handle" to make sure it fully stops the flow.
-
WCS=Waste Collection System

-
We hope...
FES Pri B to ON.
-
Leaving Radiator Bypass to FES as long as possible to allow for more weather info.
-
Big picture:
Having better luck with satellites with good comms going forward.
Want to delay RAD bypass checkout by approx 15 min to allow more consideration of weather.
-
Big picture words now -- formally waved off for the day.
-
Wave off for the day.
-
"No value in waiting for a few more hours."
-
Looks pretty mushy around the tow-way...
-
What are the times for tomorrow's opportunities?
-
Bumber :( - must be a horrible feeling to know you might be heading home today and then told that you have to go sit around doing nothing for 24 hours :(
-
Yes, just staying in orbit and enjoying the view must be a horrible thing. ;)
-
Bumber :( - must be a horrible feeling to know you might be heading home today and then told that you have to go sit around doing nothing for 24 hours :(
Ha! Try having your return home delayed for weeks. Seriously, it's best they make a decision and pass the word sooner rather than later, takes all the stress out the situation
-
-
Tomorrow, the first landing opportunity at Kennedy Space Center is at 9:16 a.m.
-
Scooter: We are enjoying the view
-
Ok, ASA heavy article will now be tomorrow. Will round up Atlantis and also cover Endeavour's move to Pad 39A (pre-empt) pad repairs (we have photos) and so on instead.
Will be on in about 30 mins. Already modified the current article for the wave off.

Will they land at Edwards tomorrow if Kennedy is no-go?
Danny Deger
-
Not per earlier conversations, but nothing has been announced since.
-
Thanks Jacques!

Concur, they'll be blowing gypsum out of Atlantis from now until she's decommissioned if they land at White Sands. They were still finding that stuff on Columbia years after STS-3.

I'm with you, but I have to tell you that ironically, I'm driving through New Mexico Saturday on my way from Denver to Tucson!!! Wouldn't that be special if I saw it fly overhead on its entry to Northrup strip.

The F5 satellite, which is currently called 171, was moved about 6 months ago and is actually located at 167.5° longitude. And the TDRS West satellite, which had been at 174, is now at 171° longitude.
At some point the satellite designators will be updated to their actual longitudes, but for the moment the naming convention is, uh, a bit off.

That's not as much of an issue now; it's more the "hit" to turnaround time. There was a long discussion about this during STS-116 when KSC and EDW (well, and NOR) were marginal in the days prior to landing:
http://forum.nasaspaceflight.com/index.php?topic=5815.0
Edwards weather looks fine, so the issue is whether there's any hope tomorrow or Sunday at KSC. If not, then the question is when they'll land at Edwards.
-
Is the TDRS problem due to satellite problems? - if they've gone faulty I assume they will have to launch another?
TDRS stands for tracking and data relay satellite. They have no spares in the inventory.
the problem was actualy out at White Sands. No problems with the satellites.
currently there are two TDRS in on-orbit storage that will eventually be put into use after the older satellites lose their capabilities, but those will take months to maneuver and put into service.

Thanks for the link, quite a spirited conversation! I did not know that they had a protected facility at WS to keep gypsum contamination to a minimum, learned something new today!

Thanks! I was still writing up the ASA issue presentations into a landing day article, before moving that to tomorrow, following the wave off...so rushed the above together. I'll have to do that more often! :)

Will the landing strip even be there tomorrow?
-
Apologies if this has been addressed, but here come my two questions for the day.
1. If the weather is bad at KSC tomorrow, but the forecast for Sunday is good, will they wait for the Sunday opportunities, even if they have a chance to land at Edwards?
2. Does anyone have the ground tracks for tomorrow?
Thanks!
-
1. If the weather is bad at KSC tomorrow, but the forecast for Sunday is good, will they wait for the Sunday opportunities, even if they have a chance to land at Edwards?
I think that's still to-be-determined. Edwards will be called up tomorrow (but not Northrup). The KSC Sunday forecast may be a little short of "good" at this point.
2. Does anyone have the ground tracks for tomorrow?
Nothing yet on nasa.gov (as you know), but they have shown a few on NASA TV today for orbit 180 and 181. Eyeballing the KSC ground tracks, they look similar to today's.

Saturday landing tracks up on nasa.gov:

For those considering a CA landing, the Edwards PAO is advising the Rogers Lakebed viewing site is closed this weekend. :(

Is it worth it all to drive out to EDW then if the lakebed viewing is closed?

It's been so cloudy and rainy around TX that the reentry may not be visible, but here are the lucky-duckies for the KSC reentries almost overhead -
#1 McAllen/Brownsville (S for Corpus Christi)
#2 El Paso/Abilene/Dallas/Ft.Worth (N for Waco)
#3 Corpus Christi (N for Brownsville, S. for Victoria)
