Bejo,  we all have our cross to bear.  Maybe you'll make it to Australia next time around.  :)

To be a little serious, where do you find those execute packages?  I went ferreting around the nasa site today and I couldn't discover the path.  Can you describe the navigation steps from the home page?

A mission snooze button ;)

DAT final status this afternoon/evening, but already cleared the level 1 LDRI/IDC scans, per L2, so that's great news.

OK.  That's the link.  Now, to get there by point and click is not entirely obvious ( to me at least) but my reconstruction is:
NASA home page | missions (on the top menu bar) | current missions | Scroll down and select shuttle | Current missions (on left menu bar) | From the drop down list select news and media resources | Select Execute packages from the options on that page.

It's easy to get sidetracked if you click on current missions on the left menu bar.  That will take you back to the list of missions.

If anyone has an easier point and click navigation then I'm all ears.

What's really interesting is that a search for "execute package" on nasa produces a bit of out of date stuff but nothing relevant.  A search for STS 125 takes you to the current missions on the left menu bar as above.

Seems unnecessarily obscure but I guess its easy for 4 year olds to get to the pretty pictures.

Meanwhile views like this are becoming mundane.  Bit sad really!  Come on chaps, it may be a rest day but we are still seeing technological magic in action.

Somewhat non standard check and response dialogue but getting the job done.  Real people doing good things.

I try I mostly this way which seems a bit shorter to me:
http://spaceflight.nasa.gov/home/index.html
Then go to "Space Shuttle latest news" - top left quadrant
"News and media resources" on the left navigation bar
click on the STS-125 Media Resources -> Execute Packages

And there you go! Maybe not that much easier or shorter, but thats how I do it!

And maybe I make it to Australia next time indeed

That one works too but I can't get from the nasa home page to the spacefilght.nasa page by point and click navigation.  I think that's a left over from the old site and not accessible unless you know its there.  However we start, we end up in the same place with the left navigation bar.

Its in "News and media resources" on that page but you can't get there from the news menu on the front page.

This is just trivia and pretty much off topic into the bargain so I hope it is not annoying anyone.  There is absolutely zilch happening on STS 125 at the moment (that we can see at least).

Bejo, if you come to Australia you'll find the dimensions have been rearranged, lots of horizontal and not much vertical.   :)

OK.  That's the link.  Now, to get there by point and click is not entirely obvious

The ancient art of search ;)
1. Using nasa.gov site
Go to home page - http://nasa.gov
In the search box type:
sts-125+execute+package
and click "search".
First link on the search results page.
(the key here is to use the "+" sign to let the site know you need documents containing ALL of these words.

2. One click method using Google ;)
Go to google.com
enter: sts-125+"execute packages"+inurl:nasa.gov
Click "I'm feeling lucky"
;)

Nah, not rocket science.  Just having a bit of a grumble about the nasa site design to fill in the time.

Stopping now.  :-X

And thank you for your wisdom oh ninja of the search. :)

Here's a question for the orbital mechanics gurus.  Atlantis is currently in an elliptical orbit, well they all are I suppose but this one has a significant difference between perigee and apogee.  What is happening to the position of perigee projected along the r bar to the earth's surface?

No, cable TV relay here.  The problems didn't sync with the Media Channel Internet feed, but I saw some of the same on one of the Public Channel Internet feeds...appears to be a little better now...

It is moving up and down (in the order of about 10 km, if I have it right). The position of the perigee is also rotating relative to an inertial reference frame, anti-clockwise when viewed from the north pole of the orbit.

Kind of a chicken-and-egg thing...the cameras exist because of STS-107.  And while they might have raised awareness enough such that an attempt was made to save the crew, they wouldn't have prevented the loss of the orbiter.  All of this is hindsight, but a "greater" opportunity to respond was after the bipod foam loss incident on STS-112.

It is. Tomorrow is L-1 day which is when they perform the standard pre-entry system checkouts of the FCS and RCS. They'll also begin to dismantle the computer network, perform the first part of crew cabin stowage and stow the KU band antenna.

So today is the only off-duty day for the crew.

Houston is asking the crew to power down a lot of items including the oven and water heaters as well as the payload bay.  Is the weather going to so iffy that a Saturday or Sunday landing is possible?

I wonder how these orbital mechanics work out?? what would the window of communications be (or are they relaying via TDRS/Ground?)

It'll be through the TDRS. There's no direct line of sight between the two satellites

Has anyone seen the ground tracks for entry/landing yet?  Hoping that they'll overfly Texas like they have on previous Hubble missions so I can see her come in!

Great news that President Obama's showing interest in this flight. Hope the message of HSF is rammed home.

Next article still pending as we're just waiting for final DAT clearance of the TPS, which we understand is coming. They were just finishing the Level 2 ROI review of the RCC last we heard. The Level 1 review was cleared overnight.

Not too bad when you consider Jim Voss was picked up saying "He's making that s*** up" while his mic was hot on STS-44 ;)  Apparently the MCC was in stitches.

Yes, good news. I see from Chris' article yesterday that this doesn't affect STS-400 status at all, since they carry on working towards a rescue launch right up until STS-125's deorbit burn.

Yep, STS-400 remains until after Atlantis deorbit burn. "No areas of interest" does not mean no "Regions of Interest" which are usually in the 100s. Just means they have no areas of concern, all good :)

Actually, it should affect 400.  Assuming the MMT clears Atlantis for entry, I believe the plan is to stop short of loading the cryos on Endeavour and go back to "standby" either later today or early tomorrow.

Post by: Chris Bergin on 05/20/2009 06:27 pm
Yeah, you know this Philip, but for those that don't....MMT Go/No Go for PRSD loading was going to be based on the entry clearance. So that'll now be "no go" for loading, and hold on that part of S0007 until after a successful deorbit burn, then prepare Endeavour/127 for the roll to Pad 39A after the repairs are complete.

Scooter basically said something along the lines of  "I wonder if Koichi's awake yet, he's probably over there like, 'stupid americans'"

Of course the 125 crew all found that to be amusing. I did too :D

Robert Pearlman with collectSPACE asked about the 11R event recorded earlier in the mission...Leroy Cain says that the late inspection showed no MMOD impact on 11R (or any other panel).

NTV is buffering out for me. John 44 should be recording it anyway.

Leroy: This mission celebrates the space shuttle's capabilities.

Too early to know about Friday's weather.

Would have done a system powerdown anyway to get the additional day (EOM+3).

Second ASA failure means land at White Sands or Edwards on next rev (which we know). Depends on the kinda of ASA failure. (Will be writing up some of the ASA stuff, as we're over 20 presentations on this on L2).

Robert asks about RCC 11R - was a potential impact. Didn't see anything on 11R that indicated an impact (so it wasn't that white spot on the NTV coverage). Mentions the noises in the structure (ghost triggers we've written about before). WLE IDS did its job.

As noted earlier with the extra powerdowns, they are close to getting an extra weather contingency day.  That might allow the "pick-em" day to slide from Saturday (EOM+1) to Sunday (EOM+2); however, that decision hasn't been made yet.  (We'll know more during and after the entry team's shift tomorrow.)

They would have the option of using EOM+3 as a "systems day" once the cryo margins get there...

Great to hear the President show a lot of support in the space program! He did mention about the new NASA Administrator so I think that will be coming soon! Hope this mission helped the president in realizing how much NASA does and I can only hope that it helps in an extended shuttle program. :)
